This is a well-established combination of subjects which are generally recognised as complementing each other. They address similar material and problems, but from different intellectual and methodological standpoints, thereby enhancing both subjects. The importance of concepts and theory in history is brought out, and of the past in relation to the contemporary world. There is a generous choice of modules on those historical and political themes that are central to an understanding of public life in the modern world. This degree is taught jointly with the School of European Studies
In Part One students take Making of the Modern World and are advised to take Modern Wales , the Year One Politics' core options, and the remaining credits from moudles in other subjects from the year one timetable . In Part Two (year two and three), students take 60 credits in the History and Welsh History Section from the core modern history or modern Welsh history

Neolithic (4500-2100 BC)
Long barrows are from this period, or more normally just the remains of the rock slab tomb that underlay such mounds. These are generally called dolmens, but in Wales are called cromlechs.
Bronze Age (2100- about 700 BC)
Large number of standing stones, although no generally accepted evidence that these do come from the Bronze Age. The word for these stones menhir comes from the Welsh maen hir , long stone. Other remains are round barrows.
Iron Age
The arrival of the Celts, sometime between 760-700 BC. from Central Europe. Many hill forts were built.
Romans
The Romans arrived in Britain in 43 AD. When they arrived, they recorded four tribes in Wales - the Ordovices and Deceangli in the North, the Demetae and Silures in the South. They were resisted by the Silures of South Wales and the Ordovicians of North Wales, under Caractacus. The names of these tribes live on in the names of early geological ages. However the hill forts were no match for the Romans. The Romans destroyed the Druids in the base in Anglesey. Two legionary forts were built at Caerleon and Deva (Chester), the latter being in England (just).

Up HISTORY OF THE HAMLET OF GELLIDEG A GUIDE TO MERTHYR TYDFIL AND THE TRAVELLER'S COMPANION F. J. Pedler At a time when awareness of local history and local history sources, become more popular and widely available, it is refreshing to re-examine a local classic. The History of the Hamlet of Gellideg deals with a very important area of the County Borough of Merthyr Tydfil and overflows with local information and detail. The author, Fred Pedlar, was absorbed by local activities and kept meticulous lists of events. He uses his exhaustive files and knowledge to take us on a fascinating historical tour of his beloved hamlet. The style is very personal and surprisingly fresh and the content is outstanding. It puts meat on the bones of history. There have been many excellent books about the history of Merthyr Tydfil but if you read nothing else, read this! ISBN 1-899025-12-X T. E. Clarke

The Mabinogion Tetralogy
by Evangeline Walton, Betty Ballentine (Introduction)
The author of the classic Mabinogian, the great compendium of medieval Welsh mythology, is unknown to us, but generations have thrilled to the magical tales set at a time when men and gods mingled, and the gods had more than met their match, tales of the wizard-prince Gwydion, of Prince Pwyll and Lord Death, and of the beautiful Rhiannon and the steadfast Branwen. In the masterful hands of Evangeline Walton the twelve "branches" of the ancient text were reworked into four compelling narratives

a brief history of wales castle of harlech
the early welsh were part of the celtic "empire" which encompassed much of northern europe. the greeks called these people keltoi while the romans called them celtai, which how we get the modern word celtic. celtic lands stretched from anatolia in the east to ireland in the west. the celts were plagued by intertribal warfare, which caused them to be unable to centralise. this is why the disciplined roman legions were able to subdue them. after the city of rome fell to the goths, the british isles were left to its own defense from germanic invaders. although wave after wave of of saxons and other germanic groups attacked the island, the invaders were prevented from conquering the whole island by leaders such as arthur, a christian warrior king from wales who has become part of many legends and myths. the first welsh leader of importance to emerge was the warrior king rhodri mawr, also known as rhodri the great. he became king around 855 A.D. Rhodri through several skilful alliances. although rhodri gave his country a short but welcome period of unity and stability, his death was followed by a period of internal strife that lead his sons to ally themselves with alfred, the english king, for protection. from this decisive event forward the welsh have been dependent upon england. the next leader to rise to power was rhodri’s grandson, hywel dda (hywel the good). welsh law and literature flourished during his reign. hywel systemised the legal customs that had developed in his country over many centuries. known as cyfraith hywel, or the law of hywel, it was far more advanced than english law from the same period. the law gave significant status to women. a woman had the right to seek compensation if struck by her spouse without cause. she could also receive up to one half the family property upon divorce. women were guaranteed certain property rights, which did not become part of the laws of england until over one thousand years later.

    Welsh History
Written by: tallshipchick Wales has a tumultuous and somewhat violent history. During the early years A.D., the country was in turmoil with the Roman invasions, and the biggest defenses that the Welsh had were the deep, dark hills scattered all over the country. Without the safety of these hills, Wales would certainly have been taken over by the Romans. After the Romans left Wales, the Vikings presented a new threat to the peaceful lands of Wales. The Romans also had a huge effect on the Welsh religion and language. Wales was affected both negatively and positively by these invasions. When the Romans left Wales in the 4th century, they left it unprotected against the Saxons, Picts and Irish Goidel tribes. The end of the Roman Empire meant the beginning of a Dark Age for Wales (Thomas, 1986, p. 13).
