SIGNIFICANT WELSH HISTORY DATES
B.C.
The Celts settle in Wales. 43 A.D. Troops of Roman Emperor Claudius invade Britain. It takes 35 years to fully conquer Wales. (78 A.D.) Irish raiders make permanent settlements in Southwest Wales. Four hundred years of occupation end for Britain as the Romans leave. Saxon invaders seize the opportunity and start invading. Waves of Saxons descend upon Britain. The Saxons are defeated at Mount Badon. One of King Arthur's twelve battles. Supposed rule of King Arthur for 45 plus years. This is also the period of Saints. Celtic saints set up sites throughout Wales teaching Christianity. In the east of Britain, the Saxons remain pagan. Offa of Mercia, a powerful Saxon king, builds Offa's Dyke, marking Wales's eastern boundary. The Dyke is not a fortified one, but a permanent boundary line. The most notable Welsh figure before the arrival of the Normans is slain. Rhodri Mawr was the first Welsh ruler to unite the Welsh tribes and kingdoms under one rule. During his reign, the Vikings increase their raids.

    Hello All,
I ran across this while digging in some old books, and thought some of you
might be interested in the comparison of the contemporary account with the movie, as well as comparing the viewpoint of an English writer with that of a Scottish one: From Matthew of Westminster, 'The Flowers of History' "Wilielmus Waleis, a man void of pity, a robber given to sacrilege, arson and homicide, more hardened in cruelty than Herod, more raging in madness than Nero...was condemned to a most cruel but justly deserved death. He was drawn through the streets of London at the tails of horses, until he reached a gallows of unusual height, especially prepared for him; there he was suspended by a halter; but taken down while yet alive, he was

    http://www.parddu.net/hanes.html
HISTORY,or 1282 and all that!! Undoubtedly the best book on Welsh history in recent years is that of Dr. John Davies, "Hanes Cymru", or, in its English translation, "A History of Wales". It covers the entire span of Welsh history from pre-history and the Red Lady of Paviland to modern times and the miners' strike of 1984. It's a book well worth reading or even just dipping into for information about any particular period. As I can't hope to emulate John Davies's scholarship I've just put together a few significant dates in Welsh history which you may not be aware of. It is believed that Dewi Sant . (St David), our patron saint lived during this period. There are many churches dedicated to him throughout Wales, including the cathedral at St David's ( Tyddewi ). In the Middle Ages, 3 pilgrimages to St. David's was equivalent to one to Rome. His day is celebrated on 1st March and is known as Dydd Gwyl Ddewi During this period Hywel Dda (Hywel the Good) formulated the laws which were used throughout Wales until Edward I enforced the use of English law. The laws of Hywel Dda were more enlightened than some of the English laws which replaced them Prince Madog is alleged to have sailed the Atlantic and discovered America and left descendants among the Indian tribes there Prince Llywelyn ( Llywelyn ein Llyw Olaf ), the last of the Princes of Wales was killed in battle at Cilmeri. His baby daughter Gwenllian was taken by Edward I's forces and kept in a convent in Lincolnshire for the remainder of her life (50+ years!) to prevent her being a focus of rebellion by the Welsh against their English conquerors

(Single Honours; UCAS code V1VK) Through studying the History and Archaeology of Wales and their wider context you will gain an understanding of the development of Wales over the centuries, the changing nature of society and settlement, and the evolution of contemporary Wales. The degree will provide a good basis for careers in tourism, travel management and heritage, especially, but not exclusively, in Wales.
In Year 1, at least three-quarters of your study must be in Welsh History and Archaeology modules. You choose the remainder from modules available within the Department in History, Heritage or Contemporary Issues, or from modules outside the Department including Modern Languages and Information Technology.
The core Welsh History modules are: Age of the Princes; Images of Wales; Wales and Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. The core Archaeology module is: An Introduction to Archaeological Principles and Techniques; you also choose at least one from Introduction to British Prehistory; An Introduction to Historical Archaeology: Roman and Medieval Britain.

The magnificent Tudor period ceiling decoration can now be admired by summer visitors. Far from home. Can you help identify the picture "Interior at Conway"? (35 kb image) This is presumably Conwy in North Wales rather than one of the 10 or so American Conways. This page is part of the larger Web site devoted to Web resources for the study of the history of the Celtic fringeIreland, Scotland, and Walesas an integral part of British history. This page contains annotated links to relevant Web resources organized into six major categories (see the Table of Contents A good brief overview of Wales is provided by City.net's Wales Page. City.Net, a service of Excite , provides information on travel, entertainment, local business, government and community services for cities and countries world-wide. The service's Wales page provides a good brief overview of current information sources on the Web related to Wales. (headline) "People from Wales Were First Venedocia Settlers"
From the USA Bicentennial edition of the Times-Bulletin newspaper
Van Wert Ohio, June 23 1976
    by Beryl Pepple Monroe

Many early settlers came here with little else than the clothes on their backs, 50 cents, and an ax. They generally worked for others until they had saved enough to buy a few acres for a little over $1 an acre. With a lifetime of hardwork, frugal living and determination they carved a farm out of the wilderness. Today that acre may sell in the neighborhood of $1800. Your ancestor possibly gave land on which to build a school or a church with an adjoining cemetery in which he now lies. No doubt he cooperated in establishing law and order, serving on an early jury, helping with the elections, filling such responsible jobs as director of the infirmary, member of the school board, judge or Justice of the Peace. More than likely he helped build roads where there were holes big enough to swallow a horse.
