http://www.intergate.com/~celizwh/sdws.htm
History The St. David's Welsh Society of Greater Kansas City was founded by Robert Owen in the 1890s (the exact year is uncertain). It was originally known as the Cambrian Benevolent Society. Mr.Owen and his wife came to the midwest from Wales in the 1880s. Accordingto an interview with him in the Kansas City Star , February 28, 1938,"There was a building boom in Kansas City then. Welshmen who were skilled building mechanics and stone cutters flocked into the middle West." Current Officers PresidentRayJames Vice-President(programs)Judith Brougham Vice-President(membership)Douglas Wyatt RecordingSecretarySharon Potts TreasurerElaineJames Click here for membership form (Print and mail form) Before moving to Kansas City, the Owens first spent five years in Emporia, Kansas. Although Emporia itself was not founded as a Welsh colony, the Welsh people began settling in Lyon County before the civil war. Their descendants makeup a large percentage of the population of the county today. The Emporia Welsh have contributed much to the musical life of America. The all Kansas Music Competition and festival originally established at Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia State University) grew out of the old Welsh music festivals and competitive contests known as eisteddfodau. The Kansas State Music Competition is the oldest of its kind in the United States and has served as a pattern for similar contests all over the country. Plas Mawr was built by the powerful Wynn family in the early 16th century and has recently been the subject of a multi million pound restoration project by Cadw, Welsh Historic Monuments. The magnificent Tudor period ceiling decoration can now be admired by summer visitors. Far from home. Can you help identify the picture "Interior at Conway"? (35 kb image) This is presumably Conwy in North Wales rather than one of the 10 or so American Conways. Update: Thanks to those who confirmed that this represents an interior of Plas Mawr (the Great House, or the Mansion) in Conwy. Now it just remains to identify the artist ... The black sheriff - his estate in Wales.

    Welsh* Culture
(* denotes a culture rather than a country)
Background: Wales is a component country of the United Kingdom that juts westward from England into the Irish Sea. Wales is dominated by the Cambrian Mountains, a region of plateaus and hills that is dissected by deep valleys and accentuated by the peaks. Much effort is being devoted to preserving the Welsh language, culture and long literary tradition. In the traditional culture of Wales, great stress was laid on the spoken and written word in poetry and in prose. Previous Page Random Proverbs Next Page Proverbs from the Welsh* Culture Three things give us hardy strength: sleeping on hairy mattresses, breathing cold air, and eating dry food. A spoon does not know the taste of soup, nor a learned fool the taste of wisdom. Conscience is the nest where all good is hatched. Your hand is never rhe worse for doing irts own work. Without perseverance talent is a barren bed. Search the Web for books, papers, photos, and posters about Welsh*

their descendants. This group was instrumental in introducing Welshculture and tradition to their new country. A St. David s Day
    http://members.shaw.ca/vwmc/WlshSoc.htm
The Welsh Society of Vancouver can trace its roots back to 1908 when the first Welsh Society, "The Cymrodorion Society", was formed in Vancouver by Welsh immigrants and their descendants. This group was instrumental in introducing Welsh culture and tradition to their new country. A St. David's Day social and musical evening was organized, a tradition that is carried out to this day on or about March 1.
The Gymanfa Ganu (Welsh hymn singing festival) was introduced and the Cymrodorion Society was instrumental in starting religious services conducted entirely in the Welsh language. Around this time the "Cymrodorion Male Choir" was formed. In 1912 the first Eisteddfod in Vancouver was organized by the Cymrodorion Society. This competitive festival of music and voice brought hundreds of visitors to Vancouver and became a tradition over several decades, the last Eisteddfod being held in 1969. The winners in this competition received prizes of $2 to $250 and in later years trophies were awarded, some still on display to this day.
In 1924 the Cambrian Society was formed and it was with donations and volunteer labour that the Cambrian Hall was built at 17th and Main. The official opening of the hall on September 1st 1929 was celebrated with a grand concert. Financially, the Cambrian Hall barely survived the Depression. Rummage sales and "Teas" run by the women raised funds to maintain it. The war years also took their toll, but again the women kept up their charity work and sent parcels to the men overseas.
