An Englyn is beautiful in its brevity, exquisite in its diction, making remarkable use of alliteration. The poems themselves are often pointed and thought provoking. There are many forms of Englyn, but the most often used is known as Englyn unodl union. This is a form of thirty syllables arranged in lines of ten, six, seven and seven syllables. There is one end-rhyme, but in the first line one, two or three syllables layer the rhyming word, and are echoed in the first words of the second line. Cynghanedd (literally "harmony", where there is an internal alliteration - certain consonants are made to recur regularly within a line) is necessary. Cynghanedd is a complex system of interplay between vowels and consonants resulting in internal and end rhyme and complex alliteration.

The Welsh community in Patagonia
An American journalist who used the internet to contact Welsh-speaking communities all over the world is to address a conference about the globalisation of different cultures. Pamela Petro, author of "Travels in an Ancient Tongue: touring the World Speaking Welsh" began learning Welsh when she was studying in Lampeter in west Wales. She found it infuriating that whenever she stumbled with her Welsh, the locals would revert to English. So Ms Petro decided to go where English was not an option - other countries with long-standing Welsh-speaking communities. She visited the Hong Kong Men's Choir, a group which sings exclusively in Welsh, the Japanese bardic "eisteddfod" in Tokyo, the Welsh golfers of Oslo, the diners of the Paris Welsh society, and Patagonia. Cultural influences Pamela Petro is one of around 100 speakers at the three-day conference at the University of Swansea called "Writing Disaporas". The conference examines the so-called "axial connections" between different parts of the world, where cultural infuences through language, music and art move between people from different countries, or even continents.

Thousands of Celtic people descend on Lorient
A little corner of Brittany is an showcase for Wales and the Welsh as an international Celtic cultures festival gets underway. Up to 500,000 people are expected to visit the annual inter-Celtic festival at Lorient in the northwest of France. And Wales is the host nation for the 2002 event, with a pavilion to promote its food and drink, culture, music and crafts. It has been hailed as an opportunity for post-devolution Wales to emerge from relative obscurity on the edge of Europe. Tales from Wales: The Mabinogion is Celtic myth-making at its best
That was the theme of the Welsh Assembly Economic Minister Andrew Davies' speech as he officially launched Wales's presence at the festival Friday. He said: "Wales has changed and the Wales of the 21st century is ready to play its full role in Europe and take its place on the world stage.

Promoting Welsh Culture
The Abergavenny eisteddfodau were extremely colourful. A special hall was erected in Abergavenny to stage them because they were so popular. They were promotional eisteddfodau: at Abergavenny, Welsh culture was very much on display. They even drew attention to the local woollen industry. When Gwenynen Gwent went on her travels to Europe, she took samples of Abergavenny flannel with her, to promote them in the great houses, and even the courts, of Europe. And she never missed a chance, of course, to convince people that the folk culture of Wales was very special. She kept harpists and had parties of dancers at Llanover Hall. And although the English language played a prominent part in those eisteddfodau too - well, how could it not? Because Lady Llanover mixed with the upper echelons of society, and managed to persuade them to give those generous prizes; you'd expect that the English language would play quite a prominent role. Then on the other hand, you had a wonderful old hero like Thomas Price, Carnhuanawc, a man who fought so strongly against the lies peddled in the Blue Books, for example. You had a man like this who was very faithful in his attachment to Welsh-language culture, and there's no doubt at all that the ten eisteddfodau held under the auspices of Cymreigyddion Y Fenni formed one of the most brilliant chapters in the Eisteddfod's history.

Arts, Culture, Sport and the Welsh Language
Culture encompasses all the ways in which people express and present themselves. For Wales, culture is at the heart of the way the country is defined. It touches all the aspirations and ideals of individual fulfilment and social partnership that Welsh Liberal Democrats seek to enhance. The arts and sport provide opportunity to explore and enhance individual talent and creativity. They are the culmination of our actions, inspirations and values. Welsh Liberal Democrats will exploit those talents to benefit Wales. Culture can tackle poverty by allowing communities and individuals to tap into the economic benefits that it offers. By nurturing and supporting successful cultural industries we will work towards eradicating poverty.
Assembly Sponsored Public Bodies (ASPBs)
Wales is a small nation of just under three million people, and yet we have a large volume of bodies connected with our culture and heritage operating at both a Welsh and UK level.
Welsh Liberal Democrats will:
  • Establish a National Assembly led review of the functions and effectiveness of all ASPBs and bodies associated with arts, culture and sport in Wales to examine the extent to which greater integration of those organisations can be achieved to promote greater joint working and co-operation.

Author Simon Worrall relates how the Welsh add their own style and flavor to the United States. Get a taste of that flavor with a recipe for Welsh cakes. Then hear the sounds of Wales from native singer Iona Jones In More to Explore the National Geographic Mimosa. They had a model Welsh state in mind, a society entirely Welsh in language, culture, and religion. The Argentine government welcomed settlers to the largely unexplored territory, but hunger and disease took an early toll: By 1867 only 90 settlers remained in what the Welsh called Y Wladfa, The Colony. They persevered and eventually thrived, raising a surplus of wheat and building a strong community. By 1914, when a series of migrations came to an end, about 3,000 Welsh people had come to Patagonia. Today their descendants number about 25,000. Argentina imposed governmental control early on, and Spanish gradually replaced Welsh as the main language, but many continue to nurture their traditions. Since the early 1990s, when retired teachers began giving Welsh lessons, the language has staged a comeback, becoming fashionable even among the non-Welsh.
