A is A Communications The The Weightlifting Encyclopedia (WLE), The Weightlifting Encyclopedia Video Companion (WEV) and the NEW "Referee's Pal" Real secrets? They aren't easy to find. But once found, they are usually easy to understand. And the best kept secret in all of weight training and fitness is Olympic-style Weightlifting. Olympic-style Weightlifters are the strongest and most powerful men and women in the world (they are also among the fastest and most flexible). Top weightlifters are stronger than "bodybuilders" like Arnold Schwarzenegger, or pro football players, or pro wrestlers, or "World's Strongest Man" competitors. Yet most people know very little, if anything, about competitive Weightlifters. If you are lucky, you catch a glimpse of them every four years, when the Olympics are broadcast. Then they go back into their essentially secret training quarters in very specialized gyms for another four years. These athletes and their coaches know more about the intricacies of effective weight training than anyone alive, yet very few people, even the "experts" in your local gym, have any idea of how competitive Weightlifters exercise to develop their great strength or their attractively muscled bodies (no, they aren't born strong - nor do they rely on dangerous drugs or "breakthrough" food supplements to get that way). Amazingly, the muscles of champion weightlifters do not have what some people consider to be the almost "freakish" look of the bodybuilders you see posing their oiled and artificially tanned bodies on TV or magazine covers. Yet the muscles of champion weightlifters are generally stronger, more powerful, more flexible

    Some Thoughts on Proper Terminology
Harvey Newton - Newton Sports, Ormand Beach, Florida, USA We English-speakers have, over the years, introduced a number of expressions to describe different disciplines or practices related to resistance training. Since this activity is so popular with coaches, athletes, sport scientists, medical professionals, members of the lay public, and the sports media, we do them all a disservice by the continued failure to properly identify these activities. Let's start simply with the term resistance training . This is the most correct, all-inclusive term to describe the various methods of body weight or external resistance exercise for whatever athletic or cosmetic goal. In the U.S., nearly everyone refers his or her use of resistance training as strength training . Certainly one syllable is easier than three are and I suppose the shorter term implies a bit more importance. However, most of these individuals are far off target in terms of actually training for improved strength. True strength training requires the use of an appropriately high intensity and low repetitions to have a positive effect on one's strength. Simply stated, while, those who use moderate or light resistances and perform many repetitions are engaged in resistance training it is not typical strength training. Now, should they choose to use weights as their form of resistance, we can then use the term

Located at York Barbell Company headquarters, this small, very specialized museum is dedicated to the respective heritages of Olympic lifting, powerlifting, bodybuilding, and strongmanism. The Olympic section highlights American lifters and their accomplishments. Displays feature photographs of star performers, their backgrounds, achievements, and actual trophies earned by the sport's elite in world championships and Olympic games since 1923. Another major exhibit features the strongmen of yesteryear. There was a time when strongmen would demonstrate their might by lifting cumbersome objects and performing incredible stunts. As the sport evolved standards were set and weights were developed, bringing precision to professional competition today. Mr. America is honored here as well, and women are certainly not left out of the picture when it comes to being recognized by this museum. Other exhibits focus on special moments and people of the sport, including Bob Hoffman, probably the most influential man in the world in the iron sports. Tours are fun and educational for individuals and groups.

Kunjarani, Malleswari preserved for Olympics: WFI NEW DELHI, MAY 11. India's medal hunt at the Commonwealth weightlifting championship will feature just one top-rated lifter as Kunjarani Devi and K. Malleswari are being preserved for the Olympic Games. Olympian Sanamacha Chanu (53kg) will be part of the seven-member women's team for the Commonwealth championship to be held in Malta from June 25 to 28. The Weightlifting Federation of India (WFI) has also named eight men lifters for the meet. "We want to give enough rest to our lifters before the Olympic Games,'' said the WFI Secretary, Balbir Singh Bhatia, when asked about the exclusion of Kunjarani and Malleswari from the Malta-bound squad. Pratima Kumari and Sunaina are the other top lifters who would stay back and prepare for the Olympics.

Indian eves secure four berths for Olympics NEW DELHI, MAY 12 India has secured four berths in the women's weightlifting event in the Athens Olympic Games and the final four-member team would be announced only in the first week of July, the Weightlifting Federation of India (WFI) said. Talking to pressmen, WFI secretary Balbir Singh Bhatia also denied that K. Malleswari and Kunjarani Devi were spared from the Malta-bound team for the Commonwealth weightlifting championship as the federation was preserving them for the Olympics. ``This is not correct. We don't have any discriminatory and preferential treatment and hence the question of preserving weightlifters for the Athens Olympics does not arise at all. We have decided not to send Malleswari and Kunjarani for the Commonwealth championship but then Pratima Kumari and Sunaina are also not going,'' he said.
