History of Weightlifting
Humans have been holding contests to measure individual strength and power for thousands of years. In Ancient Greece , weightlifters held competitions to determine who could lift the heaviest rocks . Later on, the Greeks invented dumbbells for weightlifting competitions. The origin of the word dumbbells comes from the method of removing clappers from bells, which made them soundless during lifting. Weightlifting became an event at the first modern Olympics in 1896 and the World Weightlifting Championships have been held every year since 1891. Women first started competing in the Championships in 1987.
Weightlifting: Snatch, Clean and Jerk
The two events in Olympic weightlifting are the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk . The Snatch is a one-motion lift from the floor to an overhead position, with the lifter catching the barbell in a squat position. In the Snatch the bar travels close to the body and is accelerated by a jump and shrug motion during the second "pull" phase of the lift. The

WEIGHTLIFTING HISTORY
Origin of Weightlifting:
Weightlifting: starting with the basics As a basic athletic activity and a natural means to measure strength and power, the lifting of weights was present in both the ancient Egyptian and Greek societies. Boosting its international importance chiefly in the 19th Century, weightlifting was among those few sports (alongside athletics, swimming, gymnastics, fencing, wrestling, shooting and cycling) which featured already on the programme of the first Modern Olympic Games, in 1896, Athens. The first World Championships in this sport, however, had been staged five years earlier: on 28th March 1891, in London, with 7 athletes representing 6 countries.
Weightlifting is thus the only sport whose history in world-wide competitions spans across three centuries: from 1891 through the 20th Century until our days, in 2001.
The power-relations have undergone major changes over the past decades. At the beginning of the century, Austria, Germany and France used to be the most successful nations. Later on, Egypt, then the United States of America reigned. In the 1950s and the following three decades the Soviet Union's weightlifters played the protagonists' role - with Bulgaria becoming a main challenger. Since the mid-'90s, however, Turkey, Greece and China have catapulted to the lead. The most recent word power in weightlifting is Greece among the men. In the women's field, China has been dominant since the very beginning, with other Asian countries emerging as strong contenders to the champion titles. On the overall, however, Europe is the most powerful continent in competitions of both genders.

WORLD WEIGHTLIFTING - ISSUE: 2002/3
EDITORIAL Dear Friends,
Those of you who follow the events and developments of the Olympic Movement with keen interest must have been informed of the momentous IOC discussions that took place in Lausanne at the end of August, whereby the IOC Executive Board deliberated the sports programme of the future Olympic Games.
As it is known, medals were awarded in Sydney in 300 events of 28 summer Olympic sports. That is an enormous number of medals alone - and just think: more than twenty sports are in the waiting line hoping to be included in the Olympic Games programme one day.
International officials know that it is impossible to increase the number of sports and events. At the same time, it seems unavoidable to curb the number of athletes and officials to be accredited to the Games.
In that situation the International Olympic Committee had to make a move. They appointed the Programme Commission with the mission of submitting a report to the Executive Board after an analysis of the current programme and proposing a sort of "ideal" Olympic programme. It is important to understand that the Commission's mandate was of a purely technical nature, without taking into consideration any historical, national, sport political aspects, Federation interests or merits. The proposal they put on the IOC's table was therefore made on a technical, organisational, television broadcasting and economic considerations.

Dubbed the "Pocket Hercules" Suleymanoglu was not a big man, but he had a big heart, and was immensely strong. Standing just 140 centimetres tall and weighing in at around 60 kilograms, Suleymanoglu won the under 60kgs gold medal in 1988 with a combined weight over the snatch and clean and jerk of 342.5kgs. That weight was enough to give him victory by an amazing 30kgs. To prove it was no fluke, the Turk repeated his victories in 1992 and 1996 to become the sport’s first three-time gold medallist. Those sorts of feats have helped make weightlifting one of the Olympic movement’s most popular events.

World's Strongest Man - Doug Hepburn
Weightlifters can’t help but make a big impression. In the 60 seconds they have to complete a lift, weightlifters exude such a myriad of emotions – from determination to elation to despair – that it is easy for spectators to be swept up in the effort and to develop empathy and affinity for the athletes. So it is that weightlifting remains one of the most popular Olympic sports and its contestants among the most interesting and celebrated athletes featured in media coverage of the Games.
Vancouver sports enthusiasts have an exceptional opportunity to witness the drama and characters integral to international weightlifting when the 2003 world weightlifting championships are contested at the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre Nov. 14 – 22. The championships are a qualifier for the 2004 Olympic Summer Games in Athens.
Canada has its own compelling weightlifting character in Vancouver’s Doug Hepburn, who won the world championship in 1953 and remains the only Canadian lifter to be crowned world champion. A clever and complex man, Hepburn overcame physical and financial challenges to become the best in the world and is still regarded as one of the strongest men to ever hoist the bar.
