Weightlifting epitomises the human desire to seek out challenges, to attempt to do what is seemingly impossible, and to succeed. At the highest level, weightlifting is very much a contest between an athlete and his or her belief in themselves. It is a pure test of flesh and blood against iron and gravity. The Queensland Weightlifting Association (QWA) strives to promote weightlifting as a healthy and enjoyable sport for all.

History
Weightlifting was on the program at the first modern Olympics in 1896 with two events: The one-hand lift and the two-hand lift. There were similar events in 1904 and 1906. Weight categories were established in 1920, with medal standings based on the aggregate of multiple types of lifts. There were three lifts in 1920: The one-hand snatch and the one-hand and two-hand clean and jerk. In 1924, there were five: The one- and two-hand snatch, one- and two-hand clean and jerk, and the two-hand press From 1928 through 1972, the three standard lifts were the press, the snatch, and the clean and jerk. Since 1976, there have been only two lifts, the snatch and the clean and jerk. Each lifter is given three attempts at each type of lift. If there is a tie, it's decided in favor of the lifter with the lower body weight. Weight limits have changed several times over the years. Those shown are for the 2000 Olympics.

The sport of Weightlifting significantly differs from Powerlifting in that it involves the movement of free weights without supportive structures (i.e., bench press and squat racks) and is the only Olympic sport involving the use of weights. The sport has been described as a gravity defiant athletic movement combining gymnastics with weights. Drug tests cost Bulgarian his silver medal
Posted: Tuesday September 19, 2000 12:00 AM Updated: Thursday November 09, 2000 11:44 AM Patrick Herzog/AFP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) - In the first positive drug cases of the Games, a Bulgarian weightlifter was stripped of his silver medal and a hammer thrower from Belarus was kicked out of the Olympics. Ivan Ivanov, who won the silver in the 56-kilogram (123-pound) weightlifting, was stripped of his medal after testing positive for furosemide, a diuretic, the IOC said. Ivanov, a gold medalist at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and former four-time world champion, kissed his barbell after he had clinched the medal Saturday, the first full day of competition. The other banned athlete was Vadim Devyatovsky, a hammer thrower from Belarus, who tested positive for components of the banned steroid nandrolone in an out-of-competition sample on Sept. 12 in the athletes' village, the IOC said.

Click here for more on this story Latest: Monday September 18, 2000 10:17 AM SYDNEY, Australia On the morning of most FIFA tournament gold medal games, the staff of the international soccer body customarily engages the local organizing committee in a friendly. In the game that preceded the Olympic gold medal matchup in 1996, it was revealed that, on the field of play, Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games worker Tara Nott an otherwise engaging type who could've been cast as the fresh-faced, spunky girl-next-door on any sitcom doesn't do friendly very well. In the heat of battle Nott upended some geezer from FIFA and was yellow-carded by referee Esse Baharmast. "You have to calm down," Baharmast told Nott. Calming down is not for the 5'1", 105-pound Nott, which may explain why, after only five years of competing, she won a silver medal on Sunday in the first ever women's Olympic weightlifting competition. Nott lifted 82.5 kilograms (181.9 pounds) in the snatch and 102.5 kg (225.75 pounds) in the clean and jerk to finish behind Bulgaria's

Iranian sets world records to win gold
Posted: Tuesday September 26, 2000 12:00 AM Updated: Thursday November 09, 2000 11:13 AM Iranian weightlifter Hossein Rezazadeh celebrates his record-breaking effort. Emmanuel Dunand/AFP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) Hossein Rezazadeh surprised even himself when he outlifted the world's strongest men to win the Olympic super heavyweight gold. But even with his Olympic feat, he didn't win instant recognition. "I still don't know his name and I can't even quite tell you what he looks like," two-time silver medalist Ronny Weller of Germany said. "But he is a very surprising competitor." Rezazadeh watched as one world record, then another fell Tuesday. Then he calmly stepped to bar, looked to the heavens for help and set two records of his own to earn Iran's second weightlifting gold medal by a man named Hossein in as many days. Hossein Tavakoli won Monday at 231 1/4 pounds (105 kilograms).

Sports Psychology By Yvonne Brett bretty@usq.edu.au I began working with the TWA late last year as their Psychologist. It was here that I learnt about weightlifting and began to introduce Sport Psychology to club. The next step, for me, has been to begin working with other lifters in Queensland. This was initiated by becoming an executive member of the TWA and the QWA. My next step is to establish a Sport Psychology clinic for all QWA members. Firstly, what is Sport Psychology and what role can Sport Psychology play in weightlifting? There are a number of areas where a Sport Psychologist can help you and these can be explained by four main topics: a) team building, b) lifeskills, c) crisis intervention and d) psychological skills training. Team Building is about working with a group of people who have something in common, and looking at their team structure and how they can better operate together. For example, a team travelling interstate for a period of time may need to consider travel and accommodation arrangements and how they are going to live together for an extended period of time. A crisis situation can occur for no apparent reason and without warning (such as loss of a job) or it could be caused by a build up of a number of small stresses over a period of time. It is during this time that the Psychologist can to help you cope as a form of emotional support.
