FSM enters Olympic history POHNPEI, Palikir (FSM Information Service): September 2000 - Today, September 15, the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia began, and 11 Federated States of Micronesia participants have entered into history as the first athletes from the FSM to participate in the most famous games in world. Participating in the events with their event are Welbert Samuel, swimming; Tracy Anny Route, swimming; Regina Shotaro, track and field; Manuel Minginfel, weightlifting; and Elias Rodriquez, marathon. Accompanying the FSM team is Dr. Eliuel Pretrick, FSM National Olympic Committee president and Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Social Affairs; Berney Martin, chef de mission; James Tobin, FSMNOC secretary-general; Sweeter Daniel, swim coach; Marcellus Akapito, athletic coach; and Vanston Waguk, weightlifting coach. They and 81 other athletes, representing 13 other countries, competed in the 43 events. The program included nine sports: cycling, fencing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, tennis, track and field, weightlifting, and wrestling. (Rowing and sailing races had also been planned, but they were canceled because of bad weather.) Most of the foreign athletes paid their own way, and there were no standards of eligibility. Some of the competitors, in fact, were tourists who just happened to be visiting Greece at the time and decided to enter on the spur of the moment. Olympic History: Weightlifting No one can really pinpoint the origin of weightlifting. Its history can be traced back to the beginning of recorded history, where mankind's fascination with physical strength can be found among ancient writings. Weightlifting was among the first competitive sports to forge ahead as the 1800s saw athletics began a push toward organization during that time. However, the U.S. was a little slower to catch on. While America was still getting acquainted with the sport, the first European Championships were held across the pond in 1896. Weightlifting was included in the first Modern Olympics in 1896 as an official sport, but was left out of the 1900 Games. Weightlifting returned to the Olympic stage in 1904, and became a regular event in 1920. Three lifts were standard then, the press, clean-and-jerk and the snatch. Over the years, weigh classes were added and the press was taken out of Olympic competition. Women will compete in weightlifting at the Olympics for the first time at the 2000 Sydney Games.

Boosting its international importance chiefly in the 19th Century, weightlifting was among those few sports (alongside athletics, swimming, gymnastics, fencing, wrestling, shooting and cycling) which featured already on the programme of the first Modern Olympic Games, in 1896, Athens. The first World Championships in this sport, however, had been staged five years earlier: on 28th March 1891, in London, with 7 athletes representing 6 countries. Weightlifting is thus the only sport whose history in world-wide competitions spans across three centuries: from 1891 through the 20th Century until our days, in 2001. The power-relations have undergone major changes over the past decades. At the beginning of the century, Austria, Germany and France used to be the most successful nations. Later on, Egypt, then the United States of America reigned. In the 1950s and the following three decades the Soviet Union's weightlifters played the protagonists' role - with Bulgaria becoming a main challenger. Since the mid-'90s, however, Turkey, Greece and China have catapulted to the lead. The most recent word power in weightlifting is Greece among the men. In the women's field, China has been dominant since the very beginning, with other Asian countries emerging as strong contenders to the champion titles. On the overall, however, Europe is the most powerful continent in competitions of both genders.

Olympic Rings The Olympic symbolfive interlocked ringsrepresents the union of the five original major continents (Africa, America, Asia, Australia and Europe) and the meeting of the athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games. The five colors of the rings from left to right are blue, black and red across the top and yellow and green along the bottom. The colors of the rings are thought to have been chosen because at least one of these colors can be found in the flag of every nation. Olympic Flag The Olympic Flag has a plain white background with no border. In the center are the five interlocked Olympic rings. The origin of the word dumbbells comes from the method of removing clappers from bells, which made them soundless during lifting.
