Clover broomrape ( Orobanche minor ) grower guidelines
Clover broomrape is a parasitic plant that attaches and draws water and nutrients from several plant species, including red clover. Since 1923, there have been six reports of clover broomrape in Oregon. In 1998, clover broomrape was identified in a single field. In 2000, clover broomrape was found in 15 fields in Northwestern Oregon.

Weed Science School
Scheduled for October 2005
The Weed Science School is an intensive three day course focusing on the mode and mechanism of herbicide activity in plants and the fate of herbicides in the environment. The course covers herbicide selectivity, resistance and additives. Weed biology, ecology and seed bank dynamics are also covered. These topics are presented in a lecture format. Laboratory activities focus on recognition of herbicide symptoms and broadleaf and grass weed identification. The school is designed for those involved in consulting, research, development, or sales of agricultural chemicals in either the private or public sector. Emphasis is on herbicides registered for use in California and important weeds within the state. A handbook will be provided with lecture summaries and additional information. Weed Science School will provide a rare opportunity for professionals to efficiently update their understanding of weed science and the action of herbicides in the plant and the environment. This course is designed for the working professional who can appreciate the latest research provided by some of the most respected Weed Scientists in the world. The course fee is $500 and includes all course materials and lunch each day. Class size is limited so early enrollment is suggested.

Founded in 1975 to promote research into all aspects of weed science
About WSSJ

@@@Weeds inhabit everywhere such as farmlands, amenity places and our living environment. Weeds are troublesome intruders for mankind, therefore, the appropriate control is usually desired. On the other hand, weeds are potential contributors to preserve our surroundings, such as restoration of damaged and poor lands. WSSJ consists of people who are playing active parts in weed research in viewpoints from principle to practical aspects. WSSJ aims at contributing to the prevention of weed damage and to the utilization of weed value by providing the chance of research presentation and information exchange.
@@@Crop yields decreased due to various biological factors such as damage from plant diseases, harmful insects and weeds. Many ideas and inventions have been made to remove or prevent these adverse effects so far from the ancient times. However, with respect to weed control, there was no other way but hand weeding, which was physical and spiritual burden for farmers, before the launch of herbicides. In addition, the number of farmers has reduced and the aging progressed in rural areas owing to remarkable outflow of young labor force to the cities because of promotion and development of industrialization in Japan since 1960's. Therefore, invention of easy but effective weed control technology has been strongly desired.
@@@Under these circumstances, collaborating scientists from various fields of specialization founded "The Weed Society of Japan" in January 1962 in order to establish rational and effective weed management technology. Then, the Society had been satisfactorily developing and was renamed into "Weed Science Society of Japan" (WSSJ) in April 1975, which simultaneously joined the Association of Japanese Agricultural Scientific Societies. WSSJ was also affiliated with the International Weed Science Society in 1977.

Andrew G. Hulting , Alvin J. Bussan, Bruce Maxwell, Perry Miller. Graduate Research Associate, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Assistant Professor, Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences, Montana State University, Bozeman, MT 59717. Abstract Weed management issues and concerns over the marketability of alternative crops are producer identified limitations of implementing more diverse crop rotations. This research focuses on changes in weed population dynamics over time in diversified cropping systems of Montana. Specifically, the spatial and temporal population dynamics of redroot pigweed, common lambsquarters, Persain darnel, and wild oat as influenced by cropping system, herbicide inputs, and cultural management techniques. The research is being conducted through a long-term cropping systems study that was established near Moore, MT, in 1999. At this site, five unique crop rotations were implemented in the spring of 2000.

    Career Opportunities

Usually, more employment opportunities are available in CWS than there are qualified graduates. Producers require annual inputs such as seed, fertilizers and herbicides, so they seek assistance in sales or service areas such as crop consulting, chemical application and soil testing each year. Therefore, opportunities for CWS graduates usually have been more stable than for employment areas where inputs can be deferred when income is low. Also, salaries for CWS graduates are at or near the top among all graduates in agriculture.
Many employers hire undergraduate students as interns for the summer months, and some hire for spring-summer semester or summer-fall semester periods. The department also hires summer interns with an expressed interest in graduate school. The opportunities for summer interns, beginning with students between their freshman and sophomore years, have exceeded the supply of students for several years. The salary for interns often exceeds the income for alternative summer jobs. An internship provides excellent work experience and often results in a graduating senior being hired earlier and with a higher salary than students without comparable experience.
