th International Weed Science Congress The 4 th International Weed Science Congress will be held at the International Convention Centre in Durban, South Africa on June 19-25, 2004. Durban is a beautiful seaside city. Please make your plans to be there. As information develops, it will be added to this portion of the IWSS website.

th International Weed Science Congress
International Convention Center, Durban, South Africa
Hosted by the Southern African Weed Science Society in association with the IWSS Background The International Weed Science Society will hold its 4 th Congress in Durban South Africa between 19 and 25 June 2004 . The Southern African Weed Science Society and the IWSS will jointly host the event. The congress venue is the International Convention Center (ICC) in Durban , a vibrant coastal city situated on the subtropical east coast of the Republic of South Africa . Places worth visiting in Durban range from art galleries, theatres, museums and historical sites, botanical gardens, oceanarium, shopping, and a wide variety of beach and ocean activities. You can visit reconstructed traditional villages and experience real African culture, and even confer with the resident sangoma (traditional healer/oracle). But perhaps you prefer to tempt fate head-on by swimming with dolphins, do rock climbing, abseiling, or gorge crossing. See the section

Positions in Weed Science
(WeedJobs)
New position(s) added on June 11, 2004 Index of positions available The WeedJobs pages, which were first published as an independent site on February 6, 1995, list permanent, term, postdoctoral, graduate student and summer positions in weed science for which applications are invited. Invitations for job swaps are also posted. This site has been the official WWW vehicle for the Placement Service of the Weed Science Society of America and the Canadian Weed Science Society for some time. In 2002, it was formally incorporated into the WSSA site.
Information for Persons Seeking Positions
I have no personal knowledge of the positions advertised nor the advertisers. I assume that the listings have been submitted in good faith. Advertisers do frequently extend the closing date so it is worth enquiring about a position which is still listed even though the closing date has passed.

Information for Persons Wishing to Advertise Positions
Why advertise your weed science position here? First, you get worldwide advertising - most of the younger generation surf the Internet when job hunting. Second, it is fast - it can be on this page the same day that you submit it. Compare this with the WSSA Newsletter which only comes out every three months and requires submissions one and a half months prior to publication. Third, and best of all, it's free.

Wisconsin Extension agronomists and horticulturalists respond to the needs of Wisconsin growers and related agribusinesses. Programs are developed that build the knowledge base and decision-making skills of agricultural professionals in the state. This involves workshops, hands-on training sessions, field days, and a diversity of educational meetings and materials. The Wisconsin Crop Manager newsletter is a weekly publication that provides real-time information on current agricultural and horticultural issues throughout the growing season. The Agronomy Advice articles are short articles that address specific weed problems or other weed management issues. Many of the articles found here are also found elsewhere on this website. Weed Profiles are information-packed fact sheets about specific weeds including their biology, habitat, distribution, importance, and management. Current herbicide labels and IPM strategies are discussed in the Weed Management section. Herbicide registrations that occur after the printed recommendation publications have gone to press are also found here.

9. The summer's flower is to the summer sweet,
10. Though to itself, it only live and die,
11. But if that flower with base infection meet,
12. The basest weed outbraves his dignity:
13. For sweetest things turn sourest by their deeds;
14. Lilies that fester, smell far worse than weeds.
Interpreting such lines has kept many a scholar busy over the years, and it is generally accepted that the analogies are to aspects of the human condition. Shakespeare was indeed the master of analogies. However, as an agronomist, I cannot help but see some prophecy in the bard's lines, especially in relation to the importance of crop health (11-12), and the problems we now encounter with volunteer crops (13-14). This is probably a bit of a stretch, but then so are some of the other interpretations. Not sure what the gentleman in Halifax would have thought if I had quoted some of this verse!
On a more pragmatic note, there are many issues facing our discipline and our societies, some of which I discuss below. If you have any comments or suggestions on these issues or others, please do not hesitate to contact me by email at O'DonovanJ@agr.gc.ca or by telephone at 780-354-5144. Let us welcome spring and a successful year ahead for all of us.

EXTENSION
Working closely with Extension Agents and growers. TEACHING Training future agricultural leaders. Suggestions? We are continually adding new information to our website. However, if there are additional topics or resources that are of interest to you, please send us an email describing what you are looking for. This website may contain research results of use patterns of herbicides, some of which may not be currently registered for the particular use. Such results are included for informational purposes only and should not be taken as recommendations for use. Additionally, the University of Georgia does not guarantee nor warrant the standards of the products, nor do they imply approval of the products to the exclusion of others which may be similarly effective.
