WebQuests and Scavenger Hunts
What's the difference? WebQuests usually take several sessions to complete and involve a finished product as a result of the research. Often there are scoring rubrics for the project. Scavenger Hunts, also called Cyberhunts, Web Hunts or Treasure Hunts, are one session lessons involving answering questions by visiting specific web sites. The grade divisions below are arbitrary. A wide range of quality content can be made available on the web. While some people prefer to develop long-term projects, others find small-scale, short-term web development projects more manageable. Small-scale, short-term projects are a great way to get started with Internet-based projects. Rather than commit yourself to a years worth of activities, design projects that take a couple days or weeks. With some experience, you may dive into a semester long project. Consider small scale projects such as hot lists, treasure hunts, sharing, and informational projects first. Then, work on developing instructional materials, webquests, case studies and other projects that involve lots of planning and development. Explore a short term project such as the Everglades Project . What's the purpose of the project? How were students involved? Is this a good use of the Internet. Why or why not? Examine Heronsgate to get a glimpse of the diverse projects of this classroom. How were the children involved in these projects? Did they require students to have access to Internet? What role did the teacher play in the projects?

We have also created Handouts that you can download to help you understand and use Filamentality. Finally, before you spend tons of precious time making a web page, you can see what other Filamentality users have already done. Use the KNE Search Page to search Filamentality
Note: For step-by-step directions, take a look at the Guided Tour or download the Filamentality flowchart handout
Useful Tips
To support and simplify things, Filamentality has done two specific things, added Mentality Tips and Quick Spins.
  • Added links called "Mentality Tips" to help you through the process. The first time you use Filamentality, we suggest you click on these whenever you run across them. Mentality Tips give you user-friendly online tips and explanations related to where you are in the filamentality process.
  • Once you decide which activity formats you will make (Hotlist, Scrapbook, Treasure Hunt, Sampler, or WebQuest), you can speed things up by taking a "Quick Spin" whenever one is offered. Quick Spins allow you to skip some steps. This means that instead of asking you to create your own title, introduction, etc., Filamentality will use some stock wording. Of course, you can always return to your existing topic and add your own flair later; but the first time through, you might like to take the generic route.

The Internet is a source of information that teachers and students must learn to access and manage. This project will enable students and teachers to make worldwide curriculum connections. Students with limited access to technology outside the classroom will learn to use and incorporate technology as an integral part of their lives through this project. There is a vast amount of information available on the Internet that supports Utah State Office of Education (USOE) core curriculum. Our goal is to organize this information in a way that makes it meaningful to students and teachers. Filamentality web software enables the Internet user to manage Internet sites and tie them to curriculum by designing a hotlist, treasure hunt, or activity page/web quest. Project teams, composed of students and teachers, can teach students how to use Filamentality. Students and teachers can then create curriculum-based web pages that can be placed on activity pages/web quests to be used by their peers globally. This creates a two-way learning model, shifting participants from active learner to active teachers within their own classroom setting. Salt Lake City School District (SLCSD) has an increasingly large population of low income students who speak a language other than English. The Internet will help students see relationships in their world as they use the Internet to synthesize information, and it will give them lifelong skills to repeat this process, as outlined in the State Life Skills document.

Ken and Brenda, 6-year-old Clarice and 4-year-old Aidan have put on their walking shoes for the Sunday afternoon adventure. Armed with a Global Positioning System (GPS) unit, we'll be able to get within 12 to 15 feet of our cachea hidden container of booty in the form of small trinkets and a notebook in which to log our success. Coordinates obtained from an Internet site, which lists nearly 50 caches in the Butte County area and 680 of them within 100 miles, point us toward our goal. If we get stuck along the way, we can decode a clue provided by the people who hid that particular cache.

    - Presenter Welcome
Everyone is talking about the World Wide Web and how exciting it is, but many of us are still wondering how to successfully use it with students and in our educational practice.
Today you will have the opportunity to explore some educational resources available on the World Wide Web as well as several strategies for integrating the Internet into the classroom.
    Goals for today's workshop include:
    • The basics of Digital Photography and its many classroom uses Overview of Web-based instructional strategies Guided learning Educational Resources-Where can you find them? Teacher Resources Researching the Web- tips and techniques Create a simple Web-based activity- The Hotlist
The Basics of Using a Digital Camera
Today you are going to have the opportunity to work with a digital camera and learn the basics of its operation. They are very simple to use, there is really nothing to it. The advantage of the digital camera is that you do not need film, there is no development process so you have instant access to the pictures you take.
Here are some examples of how you can use them in the school environment: Digital Cameras in Education
