About the Course
This course uses LEGO beams, plates, gears, motors, a 68HC11 microcontroller board programmed in C, and various sensors to construct autonomous ( i.e., self-contained, no direct human control) robots. The first half of the course is structured exercises in practical programming, LEGO mechanics, sensor principles, and software design, all presented with a biological slantwe consider autonomous robots to be model systems for the study of animal behavior. The second half of the course is spent designing robots which can compete in a public Egg Hunt competition.

http://www.bham.wednet.edu/technology/webtenets.htm
Design Tenets for Web Pages
Tenet Number One: Less is more.

Take a minimalist approach to page design. Employ few graphics except where the visual contributes meaning. Too many sites move slowly and inefficiently, wasting bandwidth and the time of visitors by loading up pages with chunky graphics which act like sea anchors. In all too many cases, visiting sites is akin to Waiting for Godot . (Beckett, 1952). Note quotation at chapter heading. Tenet Number Two: Distinguish between menu pages and data pages.
Menu pages should help visitors move quickly to what they need. No fuss. No bother. Graphics which are primarily decorative in purpose should be kept to a minimum in order to speed people along. A menu page should be logically constructed with well ordered lists of choices sufficiently annotated to inform the user of "what they are getting into." Deeper into the site where information is provided, graphics intensive pages make sense if those graphics contribute significantly to understanding, as in the case of maps, charts, photographs, etc. related to the topic. Tenet Number Three: Maintain smoothly gliding formats.

It is estimated that one in five people have a disabling condition at some time in their lives. As the population ages, the need for accessible information technology will increase along with these numbers. Knowbility has designed this curriculum so that you can broaden your web site design skills to include this growing population. Just as building designs can help persons who use wheelchairs to navigate doorways, there are ways to accommodate persons with disabilities in their use of online communications. Techniques and tools are readily available to help create systems that are flexible enough to meet the needs and preferences of the broadest range of users of computers and telecommunications equipment. People with disabilities, many of whom use assistive technologies to browse the web, are also prospective customers, employees, and participants in online communities.

by Jakob Nielsen The introduction of the spreadsheet turned millions of people into programmers without the benefit of a computer science degree. Because of the resulting lack of knowledge about even the simplest debugging techniques, spreadsheet formulae and macros are riddled with bugs and million-dollar business decisions are sometimes based on calculation errors. It has been estimated that at least 40 percent of spreadsheets have bugs. The introduction of the Web is causing a similar phenomenon in user interface design. My current estimate is that there will be about 10 billion Web pages on the Internet by the Year 2001. Intranets and extranets will probably hold at least 10 times that many pages. We already have two million pages on SunWeb (the intranet at Sun Microsystems). Each Web page is a user interface design problem equivalent to that of a dialogue box: you must design a task flow that brings the most important items to users' attention and design alternative options for them to click on all the while keeping the meaning of these options clear for novice users. Considering that the world will design more than a 100 billion of these dialog-box equivalents in the next three or four years, extremely simple and inexpensive usability methods are crucial if we are to avoid a usability meltdown on the Web.
Amateur Designers
Most Web pages are designed by amateurs. Even at companies that believe in usable Web design, only the top few pages ever receive the attention of user interface professionals or the benefit of traditional user testing in the

by Jamie McKenzie
Nothing happens, nobody comes, nobody goes, it's awful.
Samuel Beckett (1906-89) in Waiting for Godot World Wide Web pages were not created with schools in mind. When a district or a school begins asking how to create such pages, there are few good examples to imitate. There are HTML style books and pages, but most focus in on the details of formatting sections of pages. Few speak to the design of school WWW pages and WWW sites as an " information system. " One especially strong exception is the Yale C/AIM WWW Style Manual: (http://info.med.yale.edu/caim/StyleManual_Top.HTML) Without attention to design, the collection of pages can become a hodgepodge which is slow, inefficient and so eclectic as to be disconcerting. This chapter offers guidelines, strategies and standards to assist schools in building WWW sites which function well, offer great information and represent the school or district with some pizzazz. To begin with, those who create a school's WWW site should take a long view before launching the actual construction. The designers are both infotects and curators. Mission and purpose should be clear up front. Form should follow function.
