48. Laura Lemay's Teach Yourself Web Publishing, A Review

Teach Yourself Web Publishing with HTML 3.2 In Fourteen Days
by Laura Lemay
Those writing books on how to create and put up your own web pages often produce volumes big enough and heavy enough to kill with, and I'm not talking third generation web design here. These tomes are what I call barge books, and indeed, Laura Lemay's Teach Yourself Web Publishing is one of these. However, of all the barges out there, this one does its job well, so I've forgiven her for writing an 800-page anchor. The currently available book covers HTML 3.2, which came out very shortly after I had purchased my HTML 2.0 Premier Edition. And I've never been able to see any great distinction between the "Premier" editions and the "Professional" editions, although you can probably read the Amazon.com reveiws and comments and decide which version you prefer. As for me, I've never been one to constantly hop on the latest and greatest. Just give me a well-tested, more or less bugless computer-related thing and leave me alone. This is not the first HTML book I've bought and it certainly won't be the last, but it was the first of the barge genre I purchased, largely because these weighty things cost $40 and up. Having gotten disgusted with WYSIWYG page editors which wouldn't let me do what I wanted to do and mucked around with HTML coding to try to see if I could get my web pages the way I wanted them, I finally decided I really needed to try to fathom the difference between a relative anchor and just any old HREF. I spent a good bit of time agonizing over the aisles and aisles of monster computer books at my local book emporium trying to decide where to spend my life's savings.

Spotlight customer reviews:
Customer Rating: 5 out of 5 Summary: HTML made simple Comment: I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn HTML... especially beginners. It's completely visual (GREAT for a visual learner like myself)... and in COLOR! Each description is well organized, and it's a very simple book to navigate around. They show the actual computer screen to explain what you will be doing. It makes it so easy! It covers everything from basic HTML tags, changing the appearance of your website and publishing a webpage. I would have loved to have this book a few years ago when I first started working with HTML! If you want to get into programming but have no experience, try HTML you might like it! :) This was the first book I bought in this "Teach Yourself Visually" series, but after reading and using this book all the time, I plan on buying one for ALL the different computer related topics. This book definitely deserves an A+. Customer Rating: 5 out of 5 Summary: Cannot recommend it more strongly Comment: If you're *just* starting out learning HTML, you cannot do better than this book. It explains in very simple (and color-illustrated) terms how basic HTML works. Images, text, forms, sound and video, publishing and frames are covered. Everything you need. The two aspects I found most helpful were the color chart of hexidecimal codes and the section on cascading style sheets. The information in this book I keep finding over and over in 'higher-level' books, which often explain it much more poorly. If you are just starting out creating your web pages and like your information clearly explained, this book is what you're looking for.

The Mouse

The mouse controls the movement of the arrow (or other) cursor on the screen. The hot spot of the mouse is the tip of the arrow; when you want to click on something, move the tip of the arrow over it, then click the mouse button (if your mouse has two buttons, usually it's the one on the left you'll press).
Links
The most important thing to remember about the web is that it is mostly a series of links. Some links lead to other pages, some lead to other parts of the same page. Spotting the links on a page is essential for surfing the web. Try clicking on lots of different places in the window to find links. Links are usually represented by:
  • Underlined text , usually in a different color from that of surrounding text
  • Pictures of any sort, especially:
    • pictures of buttons (like the alphabet buttons above in Little Explorers)
    • pictures that are in a box
    • pictures that look 3-D
    • pictures that look like they lead somewhere (for example, a house usually leads to a home page)

Sams Teach Yourself Web Publishing with HTML and XHTML in 21 Days, Third Edition (3rd Edition) > Customer Review #1: Good HTML teaching:

This book is good for starting to learn HTML with a plan to move on for further study. You will get detailed coverage for HTML, XHTML standards, and some introduction to Javascript, DynamicHTML, and a little more detailed introduction to Cascading Style Sheet technique. It is a good starting point if you intend to proceed learning XML and beyond. Otherwise there are more condensed books at the market if your intension is limited to preparing your own personal web site, or such. I thing some effort was spared in order to increase the volume of this publication, and there are unnecessary repetitions with no good purpose. Web design useability and artistic concepts are weak, although web publishing is claimed as the accomplishment. Technical details for launching web sites are also weak in the sense that you will need to cover other documents in order to achieve these tasks. Maybe it is a marketing strategy, because there are versions of this book.
