Do you shoot film or digital?
JR: I shoot reversal film and digital. But if you're interested in weather photography and you don't own a digital camera, I highly recommend you buy one. About 75 percent of what I now shoot is an in-camera digital original. reviews various cameras throughout the year and can help you choose the best camera for your needs. I switched to an all-digital darkroom a few years ago. Everything we do in the lab involves a digital workflow. Digital technology has been a huge help to my shooting and printing. It's also a lot of fun and saves thousands of dollars on buying and processing film.

Storm-chasing is an activity normally associated with the Great Plains of the USA, Tornado Alley and the film Twister. But the UK in fact gets more tornadoes per square mile than the USA! They are, however, almost always weak affairs compared to the destructive storms that cut swathes through Kansas, Oklahoma and elsewhere.
I have been intercepting and photographing severe weather events for several years now. It gets you away from the desk, gives you a much better understanding of meteorology and the photographic potential is awesome! It can also get quite exciting at times.

The shot above is a large thunderhead we landed in Longview, Texas to try to avoid while flying from Austin to near Texarkana. Click here to see a larger version. Mammatus Clouds In April 2000, we had a series of storms come through Central Texas, and two evenings had these remarkable mammatus clouds: Moon and Sunset These were taken from the parking lot of one of the apartments I lived in. I went to McDonald Observatory with a group of friends to watch the Great Solar Eclipse of 1991 and got just as much video and still photos of thunderstorms as we did of the eclipse! Both of the following images were taken at the base of Mt. Locke at the Visitor Center. I know the lightning bolt isn't spectacular, like Chuck Doswell's , but, hey, it was my first, so I'm proud of it.

dealing with the problems of cold weather photography
Photographers complain that one of the most common problems of working in the field is running out of battery power. And the problem only gets worse in cold weather, which saps battery efficiency. How to deal with this difficulty? Chuck DeLaney, Dean of the New York Institute of Photography, America’s oldest and largest photography school, counsels all photographers to 'keep the camera, flash, and batteries as warm as possible, even if that means keeping them under your coat or near your body for warmth.' The problem of preserving battery power is a particularly serious one with today’s auto-everything cameras that are totally dependent on batteries. It’s an even more troublesome problem with digital cameras, which guzzle batteries in all weather and often become utterly uncooperative in temperatures below freezing. Whether you’re trying to shoot digital or working with a film-based camera, DeLaney urges everyone to bring plenty of extra batteries out into the cold. And if you’re staked out in the freezing weather trying to photograph a subject over a period of time, set up your tripod, but if possible, keep your camera with you under your coat until the decisive moment. A quick-release tripod head that allows you to pop your camera on and off will come in particularly handy in this situation. Whatever you do, don’t let the cold deter you after all, winter is a great time to photograph skiers and kids building snowmen and snow on pine trees. Just be sure to protect your gear from the elements.

Cold weather photography raises a whole new challenge to successful photography.
Cameras used in subzero temperatures can be winterized by the manufactures but few people go to the trouble, especially for occasional use.
The most common cold temperature problem is battery failure. Modern cameras all require batteries to operate. During cold weather, it may be necessary to carry a spare battery in a warm pocket and change batteries occasionally. Cameras (i.e.. manual) that work without batteries are best for cold environments.
Be careful to not breath on the lens or view finder as the moisture will immediately condense on the glass surface.
Dry cold may cause static electricity marks on the film. Advance film slowly, turn off motor drive if possible, don't force controls.
Film is brittle when cold and can break or crack.
