CONTENTS
INTRODUCTION NOT A NEW PROBLEM POLLUTED SKIES NEGATIVE EFFECTS THE ROLE OF WEATHER OZONE DESTRUCTION A WARMING TREND THE NEXT STEP? GLOSSARY INDEX People love skywatching. Billowing clouds, colorful sunsets, towering thunderstorms, and other weather events are spectacular to see. But not everything in the sky is pleasant - especially not air pollution. Air pollution and the weather go hand in hand. Winds carry pollution great distances. Rain can gring pollution back to Earth. Sunlight can change pollution from one form into another. Pollution can even change the weather! Hazy Skies examines the connection between weather and air pollution. It explains smog, haze, acid rain, the ozone hole, and other pollution problems. It tells how people are trying to fight air pollution - and how you can do your part.

Documentation Order CD-ROM
The CD-ROM stems from a research project by Shari Fox (now Shari Gearheard) with the communities of Baker Lake and Clyde River (2000-2003) to document Inuit observations of recent environmental changes. This CD-ROM is designed as both a research product/report for community use, as well as an educational tool for students, researchers, and decision makers in Nunavut and beyond. The contents of the CD-ROM are intended for educational use only and are not to be used for commercial purposes. The research project was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), grant number OPP-9906740, a doctoral fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), and an award from the Innovative Research Program at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), University of Colorado at Boulder (CU).

Cerro Tololo Environmental Information
Locally available information will be accessed from machines at CTIO: other information will be accessed from other sites in Chile and across the world. Clearly, if you're at CTIO, you will get faster results accessing the local datasets.
CURRENT SITE CONDITIONS
  • The current site conditions web page shows current conditions on Cerro Tololo from the weather station and seeing monitor. It is an automatically updating web page, which means that if you leave it open, it will automagically refresh every 2 min or so with the latest information.
  • We have a separate page devoted specifically to Blanco 4m environmental conditions , showing the temperatures of various components of the 4m telescope. The upper truss temperature is inversely proportional to the focus for prime focus instruments (coeff = -135).
  • Instantaneous data from CTIO's weather station updated on demand.
  • The Seeing Monitor on Cerro Tololo, with latest logs of the seeing conditions.
  • COMMAND LINE OPTIONS: These can be used at the UNIX prompt on most of the workstations on Cerro Tololo.

    Summary
The following case study, written in Summer 2002, has been created to demonstrate ways in which RDN Hub's resources, in this case GEsource http://www.gesource.ac.uk/ ), and other Web resources could be incorporated into practical teaching and learning activities in Land and Environment. Activities have been mapped to specific modules where relevant.
    Land, Environment and the Weather
Scenario This case study introduces students to weather and the United Kingdom Meteorological Office. The importance of Weather and the UK Climate on the land and environment can not be overstated and should be emphasised throughout the case study. Through a series of pictures, text pages and questions, students develop a basic understanding of the UK Climate. Outline of exercise Using the SOSIG Search engine located at:
    http://www.sosig.ac.uk/
students should search for the United Kingdom Meteorological Office using the following search text: UK Met Office The Meteorological Office has a government Web site at:
