INDEPTH: FORCES OF NATURE
Weather: Be prepared
We live in air like goldfish live in water.
Since the air that surrounds the Earth like a white around a yolk also contains the moisture that produces rain, air conditions also mean water conditions. There again, the range between a gentle drizzle and a monsoon is more than just quantity, at least in terms of its effect on anything that lives in its path.
The third partner in weather is heat since air and moisture are dramatically affected by it. As air heats it achieves buoyancy and absorbency; as it cools it loses both. Though the range of temperatures on the Earth's surface is only about two per cent of the temperature on the sun, both the top and bottom end can be fatal to life.
  • Surface of our sun is approx. 6,000° C.

During this school year, I will be adding various themes to this site. These themes will be useful to you in your curriculum and will cover topics that many classes study throughout the year. Each topic will be sorted according to sub-topics within the theme in the hope that it will make your location of specific information easier.
Please note: All of the links and how you access the Themes pages are presently being re-organized and updated as time permits. Sites are all being annotated as well. Thanks for your patience during the reconstruction!

How We Lose Heat to the Environment
  • Radiation - loss of heat to the environment due to the temperature gradient (this occurs only as long as the ambient temperature is below 98.6). Factors important in radiant heat loss are the surface area and the temperature gradient. Conduction - through direct contact between objects, molecular transference of heat energy

Global Warming - An Overview by Helen Willetts
BBC Broadcast Meteorologist Helen Willetts explains the issue of global warming - what the problem is and how we've contributed to it. Like our day-to-day weather, climate change is a very complex subject. The media provides us with reports about global warming but it can be difficult to form an objective opinion when other scientists put forward what look like opposing views. What we need to understand is that these views are just other climate change scenarios and nothing is set in stone. The latest thinking is that the world is warming up, but how this will affect us in the future is difficult to qualify. All scientists agree that the world is warming- the debate is centred on how much is due to human activity. The weather elements at a given location will vary from day to day and from year to year, but generally are expected to remain within set limits over a long time period. This is known as our climate. This natural variability ensures we have cold and warm years. When we talk about global warming, we talk about the 'greenhouse effect'. This is actually a natural and essential feature of our atmosphere without which our planet would be uninhabitable. This process works by the principle that certain atmospheric gases, (or greenhouse gases) allow short wave radiation from the sun to pass through them unabsorbed, while at the same time absorbing some of the long wave radiation reflected back to space. The net result; more heat is received from the sun than is lost back to space, keeping the earth's surface some 30 to 35C warmer than it would otherwise be.

GOES Satellites geostationary operational environmental satellites Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) circle the Earth in a geosynchronous orbit over the equator. This means they observe the Earth from the exact same place all the time. This allows the GOES satellites to continuously monitor a single position on the earth's surface. From 35,800 kilometers (22,300 miles) above the earth, GOES satellites provide half-hourly observations of the earth and its environment. Earth coverage of the GOES-8 and GOES-10 satellites has been depicted below. Images provided by: Satellite Coverages and Orbits (NCAR) GOES satellites are owned and operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) while the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) manages the design, development and launch of the spacecraft. Once launched, NOAA once again resumes responsibility for the satellites. There are other geostationary satellites operated by other countries wihich contribute to cover the rest of the Earth. The first geostationary weather satellite (GOES-1) was launched on October 16, 1975 and quickly became a critical part of the
