I had to try it. This is my first effort painting watercolor on canvas, an experiment which I think turned out rather well. Of course, canvas handles much differently than paper so I had a lot to learn before I got to the end of this painting. One advantage of painting on canvas is that it can be framed without glass which eliminates those dratted reflections. I also sell watercolor originals through local galleries in Homer, Alaska. (13 X 15 inches ) Every summer sandhill cranes come to feed and nest in grassy areas close to Homer. As the cranes rise and soar, the ice fields of the Kenai Range create a unique background. This pair nested near our home above Kachemak Bay where we have a view of the Dixon Glacier. The wood frog (Rana sylvatica) is the northern-most amphibian species in North America. It's ability to tolerate freezing allows the wood frog to hibernate in dry duff, or organic debris during the harsh Alaskan winters. For a brief period in summer, during the mating season, ponds come alive with the sounds of frogs. (15 x 10 inches ) ( 16 x 25 inches ) The designs on some reptiles inspires me to create artwork. Few people are fond of snakes, but in their intricate patterns, they have great beauty. This hognose viper (Bothrops nasutus) lay camouflaged in organic debris along a walking trail in Costa Rica. Ravens are among the most intelligent of birds. Strong fliers, we often marvel at their aerial acrobatics. They often ineract with other animals in what we can only infer as "play". Ravens hold an important role in the beliefs of many cultures, and they have been an inspiration to my artwork as well.

June 6, 2004 Lots of new links and books here today. I'm finally catching up after a wild and wooly spring. Spring morphed quickly into summer in Ohio, but has taken a step backward after some horrific storms. We're having a lovely start to June with cool nights and warm days and at the moment, sunny skies. I've been tending my gardens and woods. The woods looked good this spring and many of my new wildflowers bloomed. In addition, there are more of the old-timers like Spring Beauty and Bloodroot that may have come up from dormant plants. The waterleaf shown here covers the woods floor in late May. Now the annual battle with next year's Garlic-mustard plants begins. If you haven't already visited my woodland project, you can start here Our Jenna is 16 months old now and turning into a chatterbox, with wild tales to tell if anyone could figure out what she is saying. The Difference between "Mixing" and "Visual" Complements BY HILARY PAGE This information could change the way you paint! Most artists know that complementary color pairs can be used for two functions. These are (1) for color mixing- to make clear colors more neutral and (2) for visual color enhancement- to make juxtaposed saturated colors appear even more brilliant. Most artists, however, are misinformed about the actual colors of complementary colors pairs. So read on! This information could change the way you paint! The red Amarylis flowers appear particularly vibrant because they are surrounded by the VISUAL COMPLEMENT of red which is Turquoise blue green. Long before I began to research color I realized that specific pairs of colors mutually enhance one another. This was because in my youth in England when I used to paint color coordinated plaster pixies to sell for extra pocket money, I found that certain combinations such as blue and yellow, were particularly pleasing. These same color pairs are what I now call "visual complements" though I didn't know them by that name in those days! My later experience as a painter, and research for my books led me to question the prevailing literature on the subject. It has become clear to me that there are not just one set of complementary color pairs but two sets. These are required for the two separate functions of color mixing and color enhancement. The colors of the two sets are definitely not the same though most artists are unaware of this. How about you! The good news is that if you use the right visual complements, the color in your paintings will be more exquisite and dazzling than ever before.
