Where appropriate, we would like to see loop trails, interpretive trails, and parallel trails farther from the shore. It is intended that this Trail connect to regional trail systems. Our recommendation is that specific uses for segments of the trail not be designated until after further study and environmental review of specific trail alighments, but that the proposal for a Shoreline Trail around the Lake be adopted in principle. The National Injury Surveillance System of the National Consumer Product Safety Commission records injuries that go to hospital emergency rooms and from these figures gives national projections of injuries. In an effort to evaluate horse activities compared to other recreational activities, the sports of golf, tennis, bowling, water and snow skiing for the most recent years of 1990 to 1992 were selected. These sports are dome on a individual basis and are not confined by age limits. We have no figures on the number of participants so these figures do not give rates of injury, only difference in injuries when the participant is injured. From the Ramsar Forum Multiple uses of water-supply reservoirs [The following exchange of Forum postings took place in early June and offers some interesting examples of recreational and other uses of water-supply facilities. Web Editor.] [1 June 1998] From WWF Greece we would like to know whether there are any examples of lakes that serve as the main water suppliers to nearby big cities and at the same time facilitate mild recreation or athletic activities (e.g. rowing /canoeing). Thank you, Panagiota Maragou , Wetland coordinator, WWF Greece, e-mail p.maragou@wwf.gr [1 June 1998] Best regards, Mary C. Landin , PhD, Professional Wetland Scientist, Water Resources Planning and Restoration, 3084 Tom Collins Road, Utica, MS 39175-9351 USA, e-mail landinmc@aol.com [1 June 1998] I can answer that some do, and some don't. Generally, California permits nearly any kind of recreation on major storage reservoirs. California has some terminal water supply reservoirs that provide recreation in the form of boating and fishing, but not water contact recreation like swimming or water skiing. Other jurisdictions prohibit any human activities in the watershed of terminal reservoirs. This has been the source of considerable tension between water managers, who would prefer no possible contamination, and recreation advocates, who believe the risk of contamination is tolerable, considering the degree of treatment that is required. In the San Francisco Bay area, the East Bay reservoirs generally permit some fishing and boating recreation while the San Franciso Peninsula reservoirs (Crystal Springs and Lake Pilarcitos) generally prohibit access even to the watershed without a special permit. It is my understanding that the difference is because the water source for Crystal Springs Reservoir is the Hetch Hetchy aqueduct from Yosemite Park. This water is so pure and free of minerals that the only treatment it receives before distribution is the addition of a small amount of lime to reduce its corrosive effect on pipes.

Recreational Water
Water based recreational activities are very popular in Tasmania. Recreational waters may be a risk to public health if the water has been contaminated and people have direct contact with the water. Water contaminated with faeces may expose swimmers to a range of infectious gastrointestinal diseases. Some recreational waters are not suitable for primary contact, such as swimming, diving, water skiing and surfing. For further information you should contact the local Council where the water body is located. Storm events and heavy rain will affect recreational water quality from time to time. This is mainly due to contaminants on the land and roads being washed into the water with the heavy rainfall. As a precautionary measure people should therefore wait at least five days after the rain stops before swimming in recreational waters located in urban areas where pollution events may occur. Swimming near storm water outfalls should always be avoided.
The Guidelines for Water Quality require local Councils to monitor the quality of recreational waters in their municipalities in accordance with the Australian Guidelines for Recreational Use of Water (NHMRC 1990). For more detail about Tasmania's recreational water quality, please read the

Water Skiing is safe when skiers and boat drivers know and use commons sense rules. Personal Equipment A moderate ability to swim is advisable for a water skier, but swimming ability is no substitute for a well-fitting Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Wearing a PFD is essential when water skiing, even for expert swimmers, and is required by law in most states, including Washington. The PFD should be Type III, approved by the U.S. Coast Guard, and designated as a ski vest. It should fit snugly. If it is too loose, in a fall it could slide up on the skier and pin his or her arms in a useless position, or it could be forced completely off by the pressure of the water. Click

Personal Watercraft
Personal watercraft (PWC), power boards and similar craft are power boats as far as the rules are concerned. This means rules on the age of drivers, distance offshore they can operate, equipment to be carried, speed limits and so on all apply. A personal watercraft is a craft propelled by an inboard motor powering a water jet pump. The operator sits, stands or kneels on the vessel and uses handle bars to steer the craft.

Twiggy the Water Skiing Squirrel
Twiggy makes the major boat show tour and appeared in Tulsa for the first time this year. For those who do not know her history, she is the world's only water skiing squirrel. In 1978 Chuck and Lou Ann Best found a squirrel blown out its nest by Hurricane David. On a lark, Chuck began training her to water ski behind his daughter's remote control boat and now 6 generations later, Twiggy is well known in boat show circles. Chuck has since passed on, but Lou Ann and a friend are still making the route. The Twiggy in our session, was "Twiggy V".
Twiggy skis in a 25 foot diameter pool behind a Ski Nautique sponsored remote controlled boat.
Twiggy on her skis, with a "stuffed" squirrel in the boat.
Twiggy's boat.
Twiggy's water skis.
Lou Ann called our attention to Twiggy keeping her tail up out of the water while she skis. She also had her do a trick where a child picks a number of laps and Twiggy is supposed to count them and jump off at the end. At the end, they let the kids pet Twiggy. The kids loved it. When it was all over, I suggested the idea of using a large plywood display of Twiggy water skiing (where she is about the size of a kid) that kids could stick their heads though for photos, like those currently at the Tulsa Zoo. They liked the idea.
Tips and Ramblings for Future Twiggy Photographers
My digital camera was a bit unnerving as it shoots perhaps 1/2 a second after you depress the shutter button. You have to guess where Twiggy is going to be. The viewfinder temporarily freezes the view present when I snapped the photo, then shortly later switches momentarily to the actual image which is much different due to the motion of Twiggy during the interval. One of the new digital cameras that responds quicker to the shutter would be helpful. Also would be nice if my camera recovered faster for the next shot. I kept waiting for it to get ready to shoot. I still think I would rather shoot it than a conventional camera because you have some idea of what you captured while you are shooting, vs. waiting for the film to develop and getting nothing for some unpredicted reason. Plus I did not have to spend a few hours scanning the images. Good luck to future Twiggy photographers!

Chetek, the City of Lakes, is located in northwestern Wisconsin on the Big Six Chain of Lakes. These six lakes - Chetek, Prairie, Pokegama, Moose Ear, Ten Mile and Ojaski - cover 3,800 surface acres with the smallest, Moose Ear Lake, covering 33.6 surface acres. Lake Chetek, which appears to be the largest, covers just 683 surface acres, while Prairie Lake has 1,545 surface acres. Lake Chetek is the deepest lake, with a maximum depth of 22 feet. The fish population in these lakes includes Northern Pike, Walleye, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Bluegills, Black Crappies, Pumpkinseeds, Perch, Bullheads, Rock Bass and White Suckers. Several hundred of these fish have been marked with $25, $50, $100 and $500 tags for Chetek's popular Fish-O-Rama program, which is now in its 12th year. This unique program provides cash rewards for those lucky enough to haul in one of these tagged fish.

Home Team Info About Michigan Water Skiing
The University of Michigan Water Ski Club is a way for both Recreational and Tournament level skiers to ski while they are here at college. We typically have 30 members spanning the whole range from novices to seasoned tournament skiers.
There are three levels of commitment in which you can involve yourself, we have an 'A' and 'B' competitive team as well as the option to remain entirely recreational. The 'A' team scores points throughout the tournament season while the 'B' team skies on an exhibition basis for the first two tournaments.
Whether you are preparing for a tournament or just want to get out on the water, practice times are arranged at the individuals conveinience. Our practice site is Lake Belleville, a twenty minute drive from campus, where we have a slalom course, jump ramp, and a brand new MasterCraft ski boat which is provided to us on a yearly basis.
During the fall season, which begins in early September, we attend four tournaments as well as the national championship if we qualify. Tournaments are for people who wish to compete as well as those who just want to have a good time and make new friends with members of other midwest ski teams. During tournaments, the daytime is dedicated to the three events of competition, which are, slalom, trick skiing, and jump. At nightfall, all the teams gather for dinner and a night filled with bonfires and dj's.
