Water Skiing
Water Skiing is a summer-time activity that can be easily adapted for individuals with disabilities. It is both a recreational and competitive activity. In the competitive form of water skiing, there are three events: slalom, trick skiing, and the jumping event. USA Water Ski is a national governing body for water skiing and works through Water Skiers with Disabilities Association to serve individuals with disabilities. SAFETY TIPS
  • All skiers should consult a doctor before skiing.
  • All skiers should consider using a wet suit so their body temperature does not fluctuate to extremes.
  • When learning to ski, one should become acclimated to the equipment while on land.
  • For skiers with upper extremity amputations: Do not attach to a ski rope with a device that cannot automatically let go. Use a ski rope that has a single handle. Use a self-suspending, condylar socket that can be unhooked when put under stress.
EQUIPMENT
  • Skiers with arm and leg amputations generally use the same equipment as non-disabled skiers.

As people participate in these water activities, it is important for them to be aware of the possible risks of illnesses and how to protect themselves. Many people are not aware that there can be potential health risks to participating in water contact activities in natural bodies of water such as lakes, rivers or the Delta. Unlike swimming pools, where the water is chlorinated and filtered to remove bacteria, natural bodies of water contain microorganisms that can pose a risk of illness. Adaptive Water Ski Clinic
Making Waves Adaptive Water Ski Clinic was held on August 14, 1999 at Oak Hollow Lake in High Point, NC. The ski clinic was sponsored by the Recreation Therapy Department of WFUBMC, Northwest AHEC Allied Health Education, and Anchors Away, an outreach program of the Medical University of South Carolina. Therapists from around the area recieved instruction on adaptive water skiing and how to work with various populations with disabilities learning how to ski or having the opportunity to ski again. An accessible boat was also provided throuh a volunteer with a disability to offer boat rides and demonstrate the accessibility of such a boat to participants. Information on adaptive equipment for fishing was available, along with a local vendor to answer questions about kayaking. The clinic was a huge success providing a recreational opportunity to individuals who no longer thought they could participate in such an activity, and through the support of the marketing department at WFUBMC we were able to involve the media in an attempt to educate the community about the possibilities of participation of persons with disabilities. The Recreation Therapy Department hopes to have two clinics during the sumer of 1999.
