Drinking Water Links Pools and Spas Recreational Water Australians enjoy recreational activities in and around the water, including swimming, surfing, fishing, and boating. There are two Australian guidelines for recreational water: the Australian Water Quality Guidelines for Fresh and Marine Water (1992, Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council) and Australian Guidelines for Recreational Use of Water (1990, National Health and Medical Research Council). There are also NSW Health guidelines for Public Swimming Pools and Spa Pools Potential health hazards vary depending on the water type and activity. In general the more contact with the water the better the water quality must be. The guidelines define physical, chemical and microbiological limits on water quality for three main categories of recreational activity:
    • Primary Contact recreation - where the body can be fully immersed and there is the potential to swallow water, and you are in direct contact with the water. This includes surfing, water skiing, diving and swimming.

Wakeboards That Work - An Interview With Charley Patterson

Charley, you know we're pretty disappointed that you're not coming back as a guest coach again this year. It was a blast having you up here last year, and I know the students learned a ton. Charley: Yeah, it would have been great to come back for another camp Mike, but my "Mission To Ride" Tour is going to keep me totally busy from April to September. Hey, at least I'll be back to visit as part of the tour. That's true, and I guess it's pretty cool that Captain's Village Marina is one of only two stops your tour is making in Canada. I should let people reading this know that we will be posting more info on the Mission To Ride Tour on our web site soon. In the mean time let's get on with talking about wakeboard design. Charley: Good idea. Where should we start? How about by telling us how the Charley Patterson signature board manages to get rated as one of the best all around boards year after year? Charley: Probably there's a little good luck involved, but mostly it's because we work hard at making sure the board not only suits my riding style, but we also make sure it works well for a wide range of other riders.

    49. Ip860514.html - Water Skiing Glides To New Popularity
Final thoughts. water skiing is an enormously popular recreational activity that presents a unique challenge for park and recreation professionals.
    http://www.lib.niu.edu/ipo/ip860514.html
Home Search Browse About IPO ... Links Water siding glides to new popularity Recreation agencies should not limit their concern only to the availability of land-based facilities. By Bruce Kistler and Robert Espeseth Would it surprise you to know that the National Water Ski Championships have been held in Illinois five out of the past seven years and the National Water Ski Show Championships twice in the past five years? It shouldn't. Illinois has taken in a big way to water skiing, a sport that has grown to involve some 15 million participants nationwide and one that has developed an amazing diversity of types. No longer limited to "two square-backed boards," today's water skier might just as likely be found riding a kneeboard (a short surfboard-like device) or "barefooting" with no skis at all! Many Illinoisans have taken up the thrill of tournament skiing, competing against one another in the slalom, trick and jumping events. Still others prefer putting on Cypress Gardens-style ski shows. Park and recreation professionals should get to know the skiers in their jurisdiction to develop a feel for their wants and needs, which can vary depending on whether their aspirations are simply to have fun or to become national champions. Two aspects of waterskiing on which the recreation professional can have a major impact are providing areas and facilities and instruction.

    Recreators' -vs- Managers'
    Perceptions of Water Quality in
    Illinois Recreational Lakes by
    Jo Beth Mullens
    and
    Christopher Lant P
roper management of recreational lakes and rivers is an issue of increasing importance. The popularity of water-based recreation has continued a steady growth for three decades, but the supply of recreational lakes and rivers has remained relatively constant. In light of this increasing pressure on available water-based recreational resources, maintenance of a quality level suitable for a range of activities is crucial. But while point-source pollution such as municipal sewage and industrial effluent entering into Illinois' water bodies has been substantially controlled, non-point source pollution from agricultural and urban run-off continues to degrade many of our lakes and rivers. From a manager's point of view, it is not enough to only provide recreational sites when recreators demand a safe and high quality environment in which to enjoy a wide range of activities from swimming to game fishing to water skiing. For the manager, the problem of defining quality in a recreational lake or river becomes central to effective management of the resource. Managers, when defining what characteristics of a lake or river make it a high quality recreational resource, must consider there creator's subjective criteria. A manager's perception of a resource and its quality may differ drastically from a recreator's. In particular, managers have more knowledge and information about the physical, chemical, and biological measurements in the lakes and rivers they administer. However, when a manager makes judgments and decisions based solely on these parameters, he or she is ignoring the recreational population who will be affected by these decisions. Managers and recreators will generally have areas of agreement and disagreement. It is crucial, however, that the resource manager be aware of how his or her perceptions and attitudes differ from recreationists.

    http://www.usoc.org/sports2/ws/az_over.html
Water skiing was invented in the United States in 1922 when Minnesotan Ralph Samuelson built the first pair of skis and was towed on them behind an outboard-powered boat. What Samuelson originated became an exhibition sport on both sides of the Atlantic in the 1920s and early 1930s. It developed officially into a competitive sport in 1939 when the American Water Ski Association (AWSA) was organized and held the first annual National Water Ski Championships at Jones Beach, Long Island, New York. USA Water Ski (USA-WS) USA Water Ski is the National Governing Body for organized water skiing in the United States. USA-WS is a member of the International Water Ski Federation (World Governing Body), the Pan American Sports Organization and the United States Olympic Committee. Affiliated with USA-WS as Sport Divisions are the American Water Ski Association, American Barefoot Club, American Kneeboard Association, National Collegiate Water Ski Association, National Show Ski Association, National Speedboat and Water Ski Association and Water Skiers With Disabilities Association. From the beginning, USA-WS has had a dual mission of promoting the growth and development of recreational water skiing, and organizing and governing the sport of competitive water skiing. The largest and most active water ski federation in the world, USA-WS has a paid staff of 19 persons. Headquartered in Winter Haven, Florida, the staff serves 35,000 members in five regions across the country. Sixty to 70 percent of USA-WS members are involved in tournament competition each year; the remainder are recreational water skiers.

Gigantic coral-colored, Navajo sandstone rocks mantled with lava, sprinkled with lush-looking blue-green sage, with white cliffs soaring in sharp contrast.
The park is known for it's large expanse of beautiful red sand dunes. There are over 15 miles of beautiful hiking trails. Cliffs for rappelling are featured throughout the park. Kids love to play in our large sand hill areas or hike through the dry creek beds.
Snow Canyon is approximately five miles long, with elevations ranging from 3,100 feet at the canyon floor to 5,024 feet on the upper cliffs. Snow Canyon is a geological paradise. Giant monoliths of weathered sandstone date back 170 million years. Recent lava flows may be viewed in several places. Smoldering lava encased the cliffs as it flowed southward down the canyon. Several lava tubes were formed, leaving deep caves to explore.

Search: Safety Federal Requirements Metlife Safety Tips Consumer Advisories Boating Safety Courses U.S. Aids to Navigation Boating Under the Influence ... Site Map MetLife Boat Safety Tips Safety Tips for Water-skiing Water-skiing is an exciting and challenging sport. However, like all "fast-action" sports that are fun, it does possess an element of risk. Many skiers and boaters are not aware of the potential hazards of water-skiing and as a result, are hurt or even killed pursuing this recreational sport. Attention to hazards in the area where you are skiing is especially critical due to the ever growing number of boats out on the water. The Ski Area
The size of the water area in which you intend to ski determines the number of boats and skiers that can operate within it at the same time. Each boat should be able to maintain a 200 foot wide "ski corridor" (100 feet on either side of the boat). The entire "skiing course" should be at least 2,000 - 3,000 feet long to avoid constant turning and risky maneuvering. A minimum depth of five to six feet of obstacle-free water is suggested for safe skiing to:
    • Keep the skis from dragging bottom during starts.
