Water skiing
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Water skiing is a sport and recreational activity invented in Lake City, Minnesota in and is popular in many countries around the world where appropriate conditions exist - an expanse of water unaffected by wave motion. Rivers, lakes, and sheltered bays are all popular for water skiing. Standard water skis, originally made of wood but now usually constructed out of fibreglass -based composites , are of similar length to downhill snow skis but are somewhat wider. Instead of a rigid binding, they have rubber mouldings in which the feet are placed. Skiers are pulled along by a rope with a handle fitted at one end and attached to a powerboat at the other. Recreational skiers usually learn to ski with a ski on each foot, but as they improve usually progress to using a single ski, placing the other foot into another binding behind the main one. Beginners on two skis are usually pulled along at around 25-35 kilometres per hour, whereas more advanced social skiers travel at between 40 and 55 kilometres per hour - once confidence is gained it is actually easier to travel faster than at slower speeds because of the greater lift and stability. Within the confines of being pulled along by the boat, skiers can control their direction by balancing their weight on different sides of their ski. This is used to zip back and forth behind the boat.

Water-Skiing
Waterskiing is normally offered at two lakes in San Diego County: San Vicente and El Capitan . However, at El Capitan currently there is no waterskiing or any towing due to the low water level. San Vicente offers skiing year round-26 weeks on Thursday and Friday only and 26 weeks on Thursday through Sunday. See " What's New " page for current schedule. San Vicente also has a slalom course for intermediate to advance skiers available on a first come basis. There are three shifts during the day and each shift allows four boats. Cost is $10 per boat per shift. Boats more than eight feet wide or with dual motors are not allowed on the slalom course.
  • General direction of all vessels is counterclockwise. Maximum speed limit is 35 mph. All vessels towing a skier must have an observer 12 years of age or older. Coast Guard approved life preservers must be worn by all skiers. Skis, kneeboards and similar devices are permitted. Inflatable and towed devices may be used in any ski zone. Use of a quick release device is recommended. Children's tow area is designated for safe, slow (10 mph or less) tows.

In a typical week, we can teach a skier to go over the jump, learn to do basic tricks and run the slalom course. Some recreational skiers come solely for one event, while others prefer to do all three events. Skiers have unlimited skiing time each day. All ages are welcome.
