The Slovak Junior Olympic Team celebrating their Bronze medal victory in 1999 Slovakia has always been a country with a rich sports tradition. Among the winter sports, ice hockey and skiing are especially dominant here, but figure skating also has a great tradition. The natural conditions implore the inhabitants of this country to the cultivate winter sports. Football, volleyball, tennis and ice hockey are popular. There is a very good network of marked trails in all mountain areas, and it is possible to plan a walking tour in advance. Hunting is available. Highlights Since independence Slovakia has been represented as a unique nation in the Olympics and other international sports venues. Although Slovaks played a prominent role under the banner of "Czechoslovakia" they had to prove themselves all over again under their new nation state. Slovakia made its Olympic debut at the Winter Olympic games in Lillehammer 1994. Success has followed for this nation of 5 million people. At the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics Slovakia picked up 3 medals, including one gold. Nagano 1998 was shutout but victories in other international events followed. At the Hockey World Juniors in 1999 the Slovak team managed to get bronze. In 2000, at the Icehockey World Championships Slovakia clinched the silver medal after a defeat by their former partners, the Czech Republic.

http://www.chessnews.org/blow.htm
A FINAL BLOW TO CHESS DRUG TESTING? The idea that chessplayers should be subjected to drug testing in order for the game to become part of the Olympics appears to be fading fast. Earlier this year, the U.S. Olympic Committee rejected chess as a sport, delivering a blow to support for drug testing in the United States. Now the International Olympic Committee has likewise refused to accept chess and other "mind sports" as part of the Olympics. The IOC is reducing rather than increasing the number of Olympic sports, and even popular sports of a physical nature such as bowling, racquetball, water skiing and squash have now been rejected. It should now be clear to even the drug testing diehards that the chances for chess to become part of the Olympics any time in the foreseeable future are nil. It is time to stop the debate and give up on FIDE's ridiculous idea that mandating drug testing now in various tournaments will lead to eventual recognition of chess as an Olympic sport. Congratulations to Executive Director Frank Niro for being the first USCF representative to openly challenge FIDE's ridiculous drug testing policy. Hopefully our Executive Board and FIDE representatives will follow Niro's lead. It is long overdue for USCF to stand up for what is right at FIDE meetings, and I believe that the result is likely to be the end of the idea that drug testing is needed in chess.

Background Information Sports and the Olympic Tradition - An Important Part of Slovenia's Cultural Heritage March 2001 "You are a small country but great at sport!" These were the words of the President of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Samaranch, who visited Slovenia in 1993, describing the extremely rapid development of sport and Olympic ideas in the country. Upon becoming an individual member of the Olympic family in 1992, new horizons opened up for the development of sport and Olympic ideals in Slovenia. Sport and the Olympic tradition are important parts of Slovenia's cultural heritage. In his book Slava vojvodine Kranjske ("The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola") the renowned historian Janez Vajkard Valvasor wrote about the skiers of the Blo¹ka planota (Bloke plain) as early as 1689. The early gymnastic clubs that formed in the mid-19th century brought sports closer to people and made a significant contribution to shaping Slovenian national consciousness. The development of modern sport in Slovenia is inseparably connected to the engineer

About Disabled Sports USA
What is Disabled Sports USA?
A national nonprofit, 501(c)(3), organization established in 1967 by disabled Vietnam veterans to serve the war injured. DS/USA now offers nationwide sports rehabilitation programs to anyone with a permanent physical disability. Activities include winter skiing, water sports, summer and winter competitions, fitness and special sports events. Participants include those with visual impairments, amputations, spinal cord injury, dwarfism, multiple sclerosis, head injury, cerebral palsy, and other neuromuscular and orthopedic conditions.

Nationwide Chapter Network in Every Region
A Wide Variety of Recreational Opportunities
Disabled Sports USA is a nation-wide network of community-based chapters offering a variety of recreation programs. Each chapter sets its own agenda and activities. These may include one or more of the following: snow skiing; water sports (such as water skiing, sailing, kayaking, and rafting); cycling; climbing; horseback riding; golf; and social activities.
Sports As Rehabilitation
Gaining Confidence and Dignity
Rehabilitation professionals and even the Federal Government recognize the importance of sports and recreation in the successful rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities. When first faced with the reality of a disability, many experience a loss of confidence, depression, and believe their lives have ended. They are often alienated from family and friends because there are no shared positive experiences. Sports and recreation offers the opportunity to achieve success in a very short time period; to use this success to build self-confidence and focus on possibilities instead of dwelling on what can no longer be done. The ability to participate in a sport, such as cycling; skiing; and sailing, to name a few, provides the opportunity to reunite with family and friends in a shared activity.

    International Water Ski Federation
Why Water Skiing should be in the Olympics
Water Skiing is a modern sport practiced world-wide with approximately 30 million participants on a recreational basis. Over 75 countries have formal Water Ski Federations organized to have competitions. Our sport offers high energy, high power, and high speed all of which televises well into an exciting presentation. Our athletes are attractive and well conditioned as well as clearly performing athletic moves that require speed, strength, and agility. Each event in a water ski competition requires different skills. Figure skiing requires speed, grace, and agility. Slalom requires strength, timing, and rhythm. Jump requires power, timing and courage. Each event is unique in its presentation of the athlete's skills. The judging of each event is based on objective, easily understood criteria. In slalom, the score is strictly a count of the buoys that the competitor skies around. In figures, the judges only have to decide if each figure was done or not. The is no type of form subjectivity. In jump, only the distance is measured. The format of a Water Ski competition lends itself to an Olympic style competition of preliminaries and finals without burdening the event with a huge number of athletes. In the Pan Am Games, the contest was decided with fewer than 50 competitors.
