Water Quality
Reservoir ratings
The first step in managing water quality is determining the actual health of the river. TVA rates the condition of each reservoir based on five ecological indicators. View those ratings here.
Fish populations
TVA and state agencies issue sport fishing ratings Spring Sportfish Survey monitors the size and health of bass populations in a number of reservoirs.
Clean water
TVA works with other agencies, communities, and industries to improve water quality. In 1992 it began the Clean Water Initiative, which helps ensure the benefits of clean water for communities and aquatic life.
Clean marinas and clean boating
Tennessee Valley Clean Marina Initiative certifies marinas that are in compliance with pollution-control standards. TVA is also an active participant in the national Clean Boating Campaign , helping educate boating enthusiasts and marina operators in practices that reduce pollution and erosion on the waterways.

Water Quality - Adelaide and Encounter Bay Beaches
Introduction
Adelaide's metropolitan beaches are widely recognised as some of the safest beaches in Australia, due largely to their protected Gulf waters and shallow slopes. Similarly the beaches of Encounter Bay are some of the most popular outside of the metropolitan area for their surf beaches and protected waters for swimming. The EPA monitors water quality along the beaches to identify any problems that may affect the health of bathers and marine life. By doing this we can identify possible problems and make sure that the water quality remains good in the future. During and after storm events pollution may be washed down into drains, and then flow into creeks and rivers. This pollution can then be washed out into the sea and the water in which we swim. Other pollution may come from overflows from sewers or from accidental spills. It is generally a good idea to avoid swimming near creek and river outlets or stormwater drains when they are flowing after storms.

Texas and the Environmental Challenge
One of America's last frontiers, the great state of Texas encompasses a tremendous range of biological, climatic and cultural diversity. Texas posseses one of the richest natural heritages in the United States: pineywoods, prairie, marsh, plains, plateaus, savannas, mountains, and coast. Included in this natural array are 5,000 species of plants, including 2,000 different wildflowers, and 550 species of birds. After 150 years of settlement, the native Texas landscape and environment, as we know it, may not survive this generation. The 1990's are witnessing one of humankind's greatest challenges to balance opportunities for development with the constraints of our planet's natural resources. Collectively as a species, we must adopt measures which will ensure responsible change. We must utilize our creativity and ingenuity to develop preventative, pro-active policies, initiate programs and harness resources to accomplish sustainability. Sustainable development balances our needs for growth with limitations to natural resources, now and in the future.
Water Quality
Toxics, raw sewage, industrial waste, and run-off pollution continue to damage Texas waterways. Though the most blatant forms of pollution have been greatly reduced since the Clean Water Act of 1972, untold damage to Texas rivers still results in loss of wildlife species, impaired functioning of ecosystems and increasingly perilous human health threats.

June 2003, Ref. ME474 These guidelines will assist councils/agencies to better inform their communities of the risks related to swimming at their bathing beaches. The Ministry of Health and the Ministry for the Environment consider it very important that councils are aware of their responsibilities and that the public are informed of the health risks in a way that is consistent with these guidelines. They completely replace the 2002 version of the Microbiological Water Quality Guidelinesand all previous microbiological and bacteriological water quality guidelines. Availability:

Ontarians deserve access to clean, safe water. This means keeping water free of pollutants and contaminants that could harm the environment and human health. The Government of Ontario is moving forward on a series of initiatives to preserve water quality, including new legislation, regulations, standards and requirements. This section contains information to help educate the public about the importance of clean, safe drinking water. It also helps those responsible for water quality understand the rules, regulations and standards currently in place.

River water quality monitoring in Northern Ireland (NI) is carried out by the Water Management Unit (WMU) of Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) in order to manage the aquatic environment in a sustainable manner. EHS is committed to chemical and biological monitoring of all significant waterways in NI in line with national and international classification schemes and agreements.
Chemical monitoring of rivers in NI was carried out prior to 1970, but it was only in the early 1970s that a co-ordinated programme of routine chemical monitoring evolved. From 1990, chemical monitoring of rivers has been complemented by biological monitoring. The monitored network grew over the years until, by the late 1990s, around 2,400 km of waterways were included.
A major review of the network undertaken in 1999 defined the objectives of the routine river monitoring programme to be:

98. Agriculture And The Environment - Water
Agrienvironmental indicators related to water quality include the Risk of waterContamination by Nitrogen, and Risk of water Contamination by Phosphorus.
http://www.agr.gc.ca/policy/environment/water_e.phtml

Issue
Water pollution from many sources, including Agriculture can impose economic costs on farmers, other industries, and the public, as well as cause negative environmental effects on all plants and animals. Water resources should be used in the agri-food system in ways which balance economic and ecological needs.
Background
Water Quality
The link between farming and the quality of surface and groundwater has long been recognized, and is now a key environmental and health issue. Agricultural inputs such as fertilizer, livestock manure and pesticides may cause water contamination when improperly disposed of, stored or applied. High concentrations of organic matter, phosphorus and nitrogen in surface water can lead to its eutrophication and deoxygenation, which in turn destroy aquatic habitat and produce taste, odour and aesthetic problems. Intensive agriculture in areas of high soil permeability and high water tables may cause groundwater contamination from the percolation of chemicals and nutrients through the soil profile. There is also concern for negative health effects in areas where certain bacterial or nitrate concentrations exceed drinking water guidelines in surface or groundwater. As agriculture requires access to reliable supplies of high quality water for irrigation, livestock watering, and processing, it is in the sector's interest to reduce impacts on water quality. Biotechnology can enhance agriculture through management practices that reduce agricultural byproducts such as pesticides and nutrients into water courses. A goal area within the department's new
