For the first time since 1968, and for only the second occasion since Australia played Water Polo at the Olympic Games in 1948, the green and gold will not be represented in Atlanta.
Despite a test series win over the powerful Hungarians in Australia earlier this year the Australians were relegated to 13th position in the pre-Olympic qualifying tournament in Berlin in February. This means that, apart from the host US squad, all teams competing in Atlanta will be from Europe - a development that may cause IOC Water Polo officials to reconsider the structure of future Olympic tournaments, commencing with Sydney in 2000.
The Europeans take their Water Polo very seriously and a number of strong professional leagues have developed. But, as applies to many other Olympic sports, the pressure for global equality is resulting in strong moves for continental representation in the future.
This would give Australia almost certain qualification from the 2004 Olympic Games. As host nation, Australia will automatically qualify for Sydney in four years' time.

Water polo team
set to shore up win By RUTH BASHINSKY
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Wolf Wigo is still hungry. It was just last month that the U.S. national water polo team beat Brazil to take the gold medal in the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic. But team captain Wigo and the rest of the USA squad now have their sights set on winning the international water polo championship tournament this weekend. The 2003 Water Polo World League Super Final, sponsored by FINA (Federation Internationale de Natation Amateur, the sport's governing body) will be held in East Meadow, L.I., beginning today. Team USA will go head to head with some of the world's top teams - Greece, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Serbia and Montenegro (formerly Yugoslavia). The winning team gets $350,000 in prize money and automatically qualifies for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. "I definitely think we have a good shot of winning," said Wigo, 30, who lives on Manhattan's West Side. "A lot of teams focused on the world championship, and then took a break. Our team stayed fresh since we had to compete in the Pan Am games. Plus, we are playing on our home turf, which is always a great advantage." The team is coached by the world-renowned Ratko Rudic, who has coached Italian and Yugoslavian teams to Olympic, World Cup and FINA gold medals.

In September, 1956, another controversial Olympic Trials was held, this time in Los Angeles where the temperature was over 100 degrees. The smog was so thick that only the air a foot or two above the water's surface was breathable.
As the tournament progressed, San Greller's Illinois AC and Dr. Neil Kohlhase's Southern California Water Polo Club emerged as the favorites. Before the start of the championship game, the IAC filed a protest. Earlier in the tournament the IAC had played the SCWPC "B" team, defeating them by 12 goals. The SCWPC "A" team later beat its "B" team by 13 goals, ensuring that in the event of a tie with the IAC, the "A" team would win on goal difference. The IAC insisted that the "B" team had thrown the game and that the scores against the "Bs" should be thrown out. This would leave both teams with an identical goal difference average. The AAU Committee decided to defer a ruling until after the championship game. With so much at stake, the two teams could not agree on a referee. Paul Wacker, the Hall of Fame coach of the NYAC, was eventually selected. This probably turned out to be the most unfortunate event in his memorable career. Wacker was a coach, not a referee, and because of a disability he also had trouble getting around. He should never have been selected to referee this particular game. He was, however, the only person on whom both coaches could agree such was the manner of selecting referees in those days.

Each team consists of seven main players (one of whom is the goalkeeper), and six replacement players (one of whom may be a second goalkeeper). None of the players may touch the bottom of the pool. It is also forbidden for players to hold on to the ball with both hands or to strike it with the fist, except in the case of the goalkeeper. Every match consists of four periods (or ‘quarters’), each five minutes long (actual playing time), with a two-minute break between periods. Whenever the referee whistles, the clock stops. A goal is scored when the whole ball passes the goal line. The winner is the team that scores the most goals at the end of all four periods. Canadian Water Polo History
Enthusiastic members of Canadian boating and swimming clubs started to popularize water polo in 1896. The first official water polo tournament in Canada was sponsored by the Montreal Aquatic Club and was played in 1887. I n 1909, an Ontario Water Polo League was formed by eastern universities. The earliest report of women playing water polo was in 1920, when the

Olympic Notebook: Water polo to triathlon; why not?
103 days and counting
Sunday, May 02, 2004 From wire reports
After dedicating most of her athletic life to water polo, Julie Swail found herself in the strange but pleasant position of being a rookie again. Swail, a Placentia, Calif., native who lives in Irvine, was the captain of the U.S. women's water polo team at the 2000 Sydney Games and came home with a silver medal. But when her spot on the U.S. team was given to a younger player in 2001, her life changed. "I was realizing my water polo career would be coming to an end and I'd have a lot of time every day I'd need to fill," she said. "Our team chiropractor, Tom Gallagher, was doing iron-man competitions and he had put the idea of doing a triathlon in the back of my mind. "He said, 'You've got to try it,' so I tried the Catalina triathlon three weeks later." And so, a world-class triathlete and potential two-time Olympian was born. If all goes well for Swail at the World Championships next week or at another Olympic qualifying event June 13, she'll win a place on the Athens triathlon team and join the small group of athletes to have represented the U.S. team at the Olympics in two sports. Among that group is swimmer-turned-triathlete Sheila Taormina, with whom Swail is competing for a trip to Athens. Taormina, who won gold swimming on the 800-meter relay team in Atlanta, was sixth at Sydney in the women's triathlon.
