History
As swimming became a popular recreation in England during the 1860s and 1870s, several water sports developed, roughly patterned after land sports. Among them were water football (or soccer), water rugby, water handball, and water polo, in which players rode on floating barrels, painted to look like horses, and struck the ball with a stick. Water rugby became the most popular of these sports, but somehow the water polo name became attached to it, and it's been attached ever since. As played in England, the object of the game was for a player to touch the ball, with both hands, at the goal end of the pool. The goaltender stood on the pool deck, ready to dive on any opponent who was about to score. Water polo quickly became a very rough sport, filled with underwater fights away from the ball, and it wasn't unusual for players to pass out for lack of air. In 1877, the sport was tamed in Scotland by the addition of goalposts. The Scots also replaced the original small, hard rubber ball with a soccer ball and adopted rules that prohibited taking the ball under the surface or "tackling" a player unless he had the ball.

Water Polo Indoor Outdoor Discontinued Olympic Sports One of the toughest and most demanding team sports, Water Polo first appeared in the mid-19 th century in England. One of the older Olympic team sports (first appearing in Paris in 1900 for men), together with Soccer, Water Polo owes its name to its similarities with polo, played on horseback, which is widely popular in England and its former overseas colonies. Women made their first Olympic appearance in 2000 at the Sydney Games. Seven players from each team are in the pool (30m X 20m for men, 25m X 17m for women) - six main players and one goalkeeper per side - whose aim is to beat the goalkeeper guarding the opposing team's goalpost and shoot the ball over the imaginary goal-line to score a goal. Players maneuver the ball, keeping it above the water, or remain immobile while passing the ball in the air. It is forbidden for players to hold on to the ball with both hands or strike it with a fist (except for the goalkeeper), in a matter of 35 seconds, which is the time allowed for an "offense". A match consists of four periods (or 'quarters') lasting seven minutes of actual playing time, with two-minute breaks between periods. The team that scores the most goals wins the match. The Hungarian national team has left its mark in the history of Olympic water polo with seven gold medals. Hugarian Dezso Gyarmati, Yugoslav goalkeeper Milorad Krivokapic and Spaniard Manuel Estiarte are only a few of the legendary figures of the sport in the past two decades.

Water Polo Water polo originated in England during the 1870s, and as legend has it, the sport was developed by spirited young men who wanted to play rugby and cool off at the same time. It soon became popular in the United States and is now a major sport in a number of European countries. Its first appearance in the Olympics was at the 1900 Games where it was the first team sport admitted to the Olympics. Click a link to

Games are divided into four periods of seven minutes each, with a two-minute interval between periods. One point is scored when the ball is thrown or shoved completely past the face of the goal. In case of a tie, two three-minute overtime periods are held; if necessary, two more are played until a winner is decided. Players wear caps of contrasting colors for easier identification; the official rules stipulate white for one team, blue for the other, and red caps for the goalies.

Water polo has been played since the mid-nineteenth century and has been a part of the Olympic Games since 1900, when it became the first team sport added to the Olympic program. However, up to this point, only men have been able to play for the gold. Finally this September, women will make their first Olympic appearance. Six countries will compete to become the first gold medalist in women's water polo. This year's women's field will include teams from Australia, The Netherlands, Canada, Russia, Kazakhstan and the United States. The host Australians and the Netherlands had been considered favorites for the gold medal until the United States shocked everyone by winning the Holiday Cup, a pre-Olympic tournament in Los Alamitos, CA. According to USA Water Polo Director of Communications, Eric Velazquez , "the US destroyed everyone. Even though some of the scores were close, the other teams were just outmatched." With confidence and momentum going into the Games, the American women will be a force to be reckoned with. From 19-year-old
