http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/~w-polo/history.htm
Water polo was first called "soccer-in-water" and, although it was first played in England in 1869, it was not recognised by the Swimming Association of Great Britain until 1885. The first World Championships were held in 1973, during the swimming World Championships, as they still are today. Water polo is considered by most exercise physiologists to be the "most physically demanding of all sports". It combines many different sports into one event basketball (teamwork + shooting) and football/rugby (contact). This makes it one of the hardest sports to play, as players must constantly swim to keep afloat and swim after the ball. Olympic water polo has been around since 1900, although having a rather rough history attached to it - with the 1956 gold medal game between Hungary and the Soviet Union being one of the most brutal encounters - police were needed to seperate the two teams! The game is played by teams of seven, picked from squads of thirteen, whose aim is to score goals in the nets placed at each end of the pool. Players pass the inflated ball to each other, swimming around the pool without touching the bottom. The final stage is to shoot the ball into the goal past the goalkeeper

History of Waterpolo
The first recorded evidence of the game was in 1876, when the Bournemouth Premier Rowing Club carried out the first series of aquatic handball matches. Various water based ball games were played before 1876, the most common being a game where players would sit on barrel type horses in the water and paddle around throwing or hitting a ball. It is highly possible this is where the "Polo" in waterpolo came from. By 1884 the Midland Counties ASA had sufficient clubs playing to start a championship and the game was asked to be recognised by the Swimming Association of Great Britain (ASA), this however did not happen until 1885. An official set of rules were passed by the ASA in the same year and at the 1888 General Meeting of the ASA the rules were refined in to a set of championship conditions. It was at this point that the modern game started to take shape, with the introduction of football like goals and the requirement that players should swim when passing and playing the ball. The first international match was between Scotland and Great Britain in 1890 and was won by the Scots, this game was played under Scottish rules, which were later in 1892 integrated into the English game.

Each team consists of seven main players (one of whom is the goalkeeper), and six replacement players (one of whom may be a second goalkeeper). None of the players may touch the bottom of the pool. It is also forbidden for players to hold on to the ball with both hands or to strike it with the fist, except in the case of the goalkeeper. Every match consists of four periods (or ‘quarters’), each seven minutes long (actual playing time), with a two-minute break between periods. Whenever the referee whistles, the clock stops. A goal is scored when the whole ball passes the goal line. The winner is the team that scores the most goals at the end of all four periods. For the first time since 1968, and for only the second occasion since Australia played Water Polo at the Olympic Games in 1948, the green and gold will not be represented in Atlanta.
Despite a test series win over the powerful Hungarians in Australia earlier this year the Australians were relegated to 13th position in the pre-Olympic qualifying tournament in Berlin in February. This means that, apart from the host US squad, all teams competing in Atlanta will be from Europe - a development that may cause IOC Water Polo officials to reconsider the structure of future Olympic tournaments, commencing with Sydney in 2000.
The Europeans take their Water Polo very seriously and a number of strong professional leagues have developed. But, as applies to many other Olympic sports, the pressure for global equality is resulting in strong moves for continental representation in the future.
This would give Australia almost certain qualification from the 2004 Olympic Games. As host nation, Australia will automatically qualify for Sydney in four years' time.

Hungary: where victory is a must
By Gergely Csurka
Press Officer of the Hungarian Water Polo Federation
Budapest, March 24, 2003 - "Hungary means the same in water polo as Brazil means in soccer."
Ratko Rudic said this after watching Hungary's thrilling performance in the Sydney Olympic Games final. Unique appointment — the most winning coach about the most winning nation in water polo history. No one argued with the great Ratko as the Hungarians gave all they had in that gold-medal match, which became the most one-sided edition of the Olympic finals ever. They reached the top in style and that put back water polo in Hungary where it had been in the past —first place among team sports.
Since the late 1920s water polo has always been something the whole nation paid extra attention in this country. The results are telling: Seven Olympic golds, one World Championship title, 13 European crowns, three FINA Cups and many more silver and bronze (these ones all regarded as missed opportunities). "I resign right now as finishing second is a failure in Hungarian water polo" — Bela Rajki's legendary words truly illustrate the trends in Hungary. He won two Olympics as a head coach (1952, 1956), but left the job after gaining only the silver medal in 1972. Note: In Munich, the team remained undefeated and fell behind the Soviets due to goal-difference but Rajki felt he had to go.

Dramatic 1956 water polo match relived on the screen An important moment in Hungarian history is finally being given the attention it has deserved for over 40 years. Few who were watching the 1956 Olympic summer games in Melbourne, Australia can forget the now famous water polo match between Hungary and the Soviet Union. Shortly after the Soviet Red Army tanks rolled through the streets of Budapest, suppressing a popular uprising and gunning down citizens, the two countries found themselves set to compete against one and other in the water polo semi-finals. Now being made into a documentary by a Hollywood producer company, the match has been dubbed "the bloodiest game in Olympic history." Days before the Summer Olympics were to begin on 22 November 1956, Soviet handlers plucked the Hungarian water polo players from their homeland and shipped them off to Australia. Many of the players, uncertain if they would ever return, risked secret farewells with their loved ones the night before their abrupt departure. Listening to news reports from home telling of the brutality their people suffered at the hands of the Red Army, the Hungarian players began to defend their Olympic title with the hopes and pride of an anguished country riding on their shoulders.

Hall of Fame Randy Howatt Coach's Note: Randy was on the first team that played for UCI and did a great deal to help set the tradition for water polo at UCI. He along with Pat Glasgow, Bill Leach, and Bob Nealy really started off the sport of water polo at UCI. Randy has done a great deal for the sport over the years since he played at UCI. Randy also played for me at Newport Harbor High School, then for Al Irwin at OCC and then again for me at UCI. Bill Leach Coach's Note: Played for me at CDM then for Al Irwin at OCC; then transfered to UCI. He swam and played water polo at UCI. He set the tradition along with Randy Howatt, Pat Glasgow and Bob Nealy for great work ethics. Without their early efforts the program would have had trouble developing as it did. Bill went on to the US National team and he traveled to Europe with me when I was National coach in 1970. He then became involved in Kayaking and went to the Olympics in 1976. He then has become one of the top triathletes in every age group and is still competing successfully in this sport.

Menlo School water polo coach wins press post at Olympics
Kyle Utsumi named press room supervisor for water polo events It will be an exciting summer for Kyle Utsumi, the Menlo School water polo coach who led the 1998 girls' varsity team to the Central Coast Section championship. Utsumi, who has been working with the U.S. Men's and Women's Olympic Water Polo teams, was recently hired by the Sydney Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games to serve as a news media specialist for the water polo events. He will head up the press room at the sport's venue, overseeing a staff of writers, supervising the distribution of press releases, and doing previews for every game. There will be 12 men's and 6 women's teams competing. Men's water polo was the first Olympic team sport, debuting at the 1900 event. This year, women will be allowed to enter the competition, making it at once the oldest and the newest team sport in Olympic history. Utsumi's love of the sport and connection to top water polo teams go back many years and has taken him around the world. A varsity team player at Stanford, he later became a member of the press information team at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. He traveled to Athens, Perth and Winnipeg for World Cup matches. This spring he was in Palermo, Italy, watching the women qualify for this summer's Olympics.

In the capital of Cataluna Alessandro Campania and his team made it to the 4th place of the world water polo championship. A great distinction for Greece taking into consideration the fact that the national water polo team is the second one after the basketball team in the sports history that entered the top four places at a world championship. The national team got the best from the water polo championship in Spain. Not only did they achieve the best distinction in their history, but they also attained their goal sending out the message they wanted. The distinction came at the most opportune moment, one year before the Olympics, and everybody knows that the goal of the team is a medal at the 2004 Games. The Greek national team won't face its competitors next August as a...poor relative, but as a strong team with great expectations. TWO FACES THE MATCH WITH HUNGARY THE GREEK PERFORMANCE IN FIGURES None of the thirteen water polo players Alessandro Campania used at the world championship fell short of his expectations. All of them had a part in the championship. Giannis Thomakos was the most reliable striker scoring 11 out of 59 goals of the team at the championship and finally ranked 4th on the scorers list.

    Water Polo
HISTORY OF THE GAME There is little documentation as to the origins of water polo. However, it is known that the sport originated in the rivers and lakes of mid-nineteenth century England as an aquatic version of rugby football. Early games used an inflated, vulcanized rubber ball imported from India known as a "pulu" (the single Indian word for all "balls"). Pronounced "polo" by the English, both the ball and the game became known as water polo. In 1870, with a view to attract more spectators to swimming exhibitions, the London Swimming Association developed a set of water polo rules for indoor swimming pools. At first, players scored by planting the ball on the end of the pool with both hands. A favorite trick of the players was to place the five-to-nine inch rubber ball inside their swimming suit and dive under the murky water, then appear again as near the goal as possible. If the player came up too near the goal, he was promptly jumped on by the goalie, who was permitted to stand on the pool deck. Games were often nothing more than gang fights in the water as players ignored the ball, preferring underwater wrestling matches that usually ended with one man floating to the surface unconscious. The introduction of the "Trudgeon stroke" by Scottish players changed the nature of water polo to a game that emphasized swimming, speed and passing. Scottish rules moved from a rugby variant to a soccer style of play. Goals became a cage of 10 x 3 feet and a goal could be scored by being thrown. Players could only be tackled when they "held" the ball and the ball could no longer be taken under water. The small rubber ball was replaced by a leather soccer ball.
