A HISTORY OF THE SPEEDO CUP Former U.S. Water Polo President, Richard Foster, created the Speedo Cup in 1993 with the assistance of Stan and Mary Sprague. The Spragues have been the Tournament Directors since inception. The Speedo Cup is the official "National Age Group Championship" sanctioned by United States Water Polo Inc. Participation in the Speedo Cup is limited to players who are 14 years of age or younger as of December 31 each year. No high school players are allowed to compete. Until 1997, the Speedo Cup was a co-ed event, with girls and boys being allowed to play on the same team. In 1997, a separate girls division was created. The idea of an age group national championship came to Foster while watching the Little League Baseball World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. "I liked the concept of a National Championship being held in the same location every year. I also wanted to encourage other areas of the Country to follow California's lead and have athletes start playing water polo at younger ages." The Speedo Cup was held in Chicago in 1993 and 1994, but due to scheduling problems, the event was changed to its now permanent location at the modern Rec/Plex facility in St. Peters Missouri, just outside of St. Louis.

Whitney Foster, Peter Gordon, Ed Hirsch, John Testa, Ed Opalach, Jerry Mujica and other "post collegiate" players form the Atlanta WPC, aka Georgia Tech Water Polo. Program grows rapidly over the next year including large growth of GT undergraduate participation. Atlanta WPC starts hosting tournaments, including several Zone Championships, and starts to build a reputation as a great host. ATL WPC sends squads to several USWP Indoor National Championships ('92, '93). In 1992 ATL WPC becomes the only water polo team in the U.S. sponsored by PowerBar as part of the company's TEAM Elite program.
    Moving On Up - 1994-1995
More and more GT students join the club and playing time becomes an issue. Knowing that it was in the best interest of those GT student who wanted to play, ATL WPC moved on to help start club water polo at nearby Emory University. After just over a year Emory student participation soars and the "post collegiate" players again decide to move on. In just over 2 years ATL WPC has been critical in the foundation of three new water polo clubs in Atlanta: Georgia Tech, Emory (men) and Emory (women).

History of Our Olympic Games Welcome to our web site!
Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

Water polo has been played since the mid-nineteenth century and has been a part of the Olympic Games since 1900, when it became the first team sport added to the Olympic program. However, up to this point, only men have been able to play for the gold. Finally this September, women will make their first Olympic appearance. Six countries will compete to become the first gold medalist in women's water polo. This year's women's field will include teams from Australia, The Netherlands, Canada, Russia, Kazakhstan and the United States. The host Australians and the Netherlands had been considered favorites for the gold medal until the United States shocked everyone by winning the Holiday Cup, a pre-Olympic tournament in Los Alamitos, CA. According to USA Water Polo Director of Communications, Eric Velazquez , "the US destroyed everyone. Even though some of the scores were close, the other teams were just outmatched." With confidence and momentum going into the Games, the American women will be a force to be reckoned with. From 19-year-old

History of Women's Water Polo in the USA
Women's water polo was played regularly in the United States until 1926, when the Nationals were won by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. After this time, the sport was considered too rough for women, and no Nationals were held for 35 years. The Ann Arbor Swim Club, coached by Rose Mary Dawson, was instrumental in reviving the sport. Ann Arbor, later coached by John Urbanchek, 1996 U.S. Men's Olympic Swimming Assistant Coach, won the Nationals in 1961 through 1963. The goalkeeper for Ann Arbor was Micki King, later a United States Olympic diving gold medallist. Northern Virginia Aquatic Club won seven national titles from 1964-69, although on the West Coast, Santa Clara Swim Club, with Pokey Watson Richardson and Claudia Kolb Thomas, both Olympic gold medallists in swimming, took two indoor titles in 1965 and 1966. Water polo was introduced into Florida by Rob DeVust in the late 1960s, with Florida teams winning the majority of the national championships from 1971-75, although the Cincinnati Marlins won the Indoors in 1974 with a team including Deena Deardurff and Jenny Kemp, both Olympic swimmers.

Australia created a piece of Olympic history by winning the first-ever womens' water polo match of the Games. And while there was no spilled blood in a physical 9-2 win over Kazakhstan there was certainly sweat and tears from the Aussies. Australian captain Bridgette Gusterson admitted to being overwhelmed by the occasion at the Ryde pool. "I've never actually cried before a game but I did today. It was an honour and a privilege and a very special thing for us all," said the 27-year-old. There was embarrassment for Australia's Yvette Higgins in the first quarter when she had her costume ripped, forcing her to dash to the changing rooms for repairs. Unanswered That wasn't the host nation's only hitch as they fell behind after just 44 seconds as Olga Lechshuk scored the historic first goal as Australia took time to shake off what coach Istvan Gorgenyi described as:"stage fright". But Australia recovered to lead 2-1 at the end of the first quarter and finished in style with four unanswered goals in the final quarter.

The first makeshift water polo contests were played in Britain in the 1860s - the sport may thank its inception to the monotony that spectators found in the competitive swim races of the times. Some horse jockeys with a want for amusement started "Water Derby", using barrels to replace the horses in the water. A new version called "Water Football", with three players aside, enjoyed brief success in 1876. What could be considered the first regular game of Water Polo was played in 1876. The game did not catch on, however. The same year, a more elaborate set of rules were written which were refined by English and Scottish teams. In 1885, the English National Swimming Association officially recognized water polo as a separate sport thereafter requiring games to be played in accordance with one set of rules. Interest in the emerging sport then spread around the world.

Enthusiastic members of Canadian boating and swimming clubs started to popularize water polo in 1896. The first official water polo tournament in Canada was sponsored by the Montreal Aquatic Club and was played in 1887.

An All-American swimmer, Monte specialized in the 100 yard butterfly at Fullerton Junior College in California where he swam and played water polo for two years. Monte transferred to UCLA after Fullerton and his success continued in both water polo victories and swimming accomplishments, culminating in a berth on the 1952 U.S. Olympic Team in Helsinki, Finland, swimming the butterfly-breaststroke. Having Phenomenal success as a coach, his polo teams at Long Beach City College were undefeated for eight consecutive years. He served as coach of four USA Pan American Teams from 1967 through 1983, winning gold medals in all but one competition. An Assistant Olympic Coach in 1968, Monte returned in 1972 as head coach, where his Olympic team won the bronze medalthe first time the U.S. team had won an Olympic medal in water polo since 1932. http://www23.homepage.villanova.edu/janine.kusza/water polo.htm
History Of Water Polo The word water polo originated from the Indian term "pulu," meaning ball: the ball game played in water. The sport actually began as a form of rugby football played in rivers and lakes. Before the introduction of a goal, the object of the game was to get the pig skin ball from one side of the pool to the opponents side. By 1869, an Indian rubber ball began replacing the original ball which was made from a pig's stomach. Eventually rules for football were applied to the game in the water. Brute strength was the only tactic before passing and "dribbling" evolved later on and many fights occurred throughout the game. Soon, in Scotland, the game changed from a football style of play to a soccer style as a goal was placed at each end of the pool. Players could be tackled as long as they held onto the ball and the primary rule that players could only touch the ball with one hand at a time also came into effect. In the late 1880s, these Scottish rules were generally adopted throughout Great Britain. In 1888, the United States became the next country to play water polo when John Robinson, an English swimming instructor, organized a team at the Boston Athletic Association. It was one of the most intense and roughest games ever played. The first American championships took place on January 28, 1890 in Providence where the Sydenham Swimming Club defeated the Boston Athletic Association, 2-1. By the turn of the century, the game was one of the more popular spectator sports in America.
