The heart of the Games By Yiorgos Gakis The heart of the 2004 Olympic Games is beating at the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA), a complex that will host 9 out of 28 events, but also the two Press Centers: one for the Written and one for the Electronic Press. More than 500.000 people - spectators, athletes, officials, Mass Media, staff, volunteers - will be circulating daily within the OAKA spaces. OLYMPIC STADIUM
The Olympic Stadium is situated at Maroussi, a northern suburb of Athens and it is part
of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA). There will be 75,000 spectators who will attend athletics events, as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. The General Secretariat of Sports has scheduled to complete the Stadium's renovation by the end of 2003. ATHENS 2004 and the Ministry of Culture have asked Santiago Calatrava, the well-known architect, to redesign and upgrade OAKA in an innovative and creative way, including the new roof structure for Olympic Stadium. General Secretariat of Sports (GGS), is responsible for the project by the end of June 2004.

Registered: Oct 2003 posted 03-09-2004 02:48 PM West Contra Costa school board last night cut all high school sports programs starting this fall. This includes Pinole Valley,El Cerrito,De Anza,Hercules, Richmond and Kennedy high schools. These schools are located in East Bay (San Francisco area) and participate in the NCS conference. Also cut were all libraries, elementary school music and counselors. This is extremely disturbing to the community but we should all take notice. West Contra Costa is the first California district to eliminate sports programs but many others are threatening to do so. IP: 205.184.146.50 polodad

Recruit Information By Edward H. Newland, Head Coach Thank you for your interest in UCI Men's Water Polo program. at UCI's Home Page ; and many helpful links are to your right. I believe academics are very important as polo players can't make money at this sport and must go out into the world and do their thing. I also believe that the discipline one gets from athletics will go a long way to help any young man succeed i n the competitive world he is going to have to live in. Effective use of time is the most important single thing that all of us have to learn if we are going to achieve in anything we aim at. I feel this can be learned but not taught; however by dealing with both athletics and academics one has a good chance to learn how to use time effectively. I love to work with overachievers because these individuals have come a long way in learning to use their time each day in a very efficient manner. Water Polo has been the most successful program at UCI since the University opened in 1965. I have coached Polo here since 1966 which is a long time. I normally work a 15 hour day.

    Club corner: Water polo
Perhaps water polo belongs to the realm of little-known phenomena (i.e. quarks, alien life, meal worms) that we acknowledge the existence of, but have never taken the trouble to understand. We may have heard about water polo, but what exactly is it? Water polo in action
"Water polo is a sport, and it is traditionally played in a pool 25 meters long, and seven feet deep. Two teams of seven kick, scratch, and punch each other to throw a ball into their respective nets. One player on each team is designated goalie, and another is designated as `whole-set player.' The whole-set player functions in a manner analogous to a center in basketballhe positions himself with his back turned two meters away from the goal and is the primary offensive player," Trevor Hawkins, DC '99, said. "Water polo is a full-contact sport. Nearly anything goesplayers can even drape themselves over their opponent holding the ball. There are several regulations, though. Players can only touch the ball with one hand, and they cannot touch the bottom of the pool." Incidentally, Yale happens to have its own water polo team, and because it has been designated club status, it has no official coach. As a result, the team is led by senior Ian Bedford, DC '97, who doubles as both captain and coach. Practice began three weeks ago, consisting primarily of fitness training and conditioning. "Our goal was to get into shape; the game is very physical and requires a lot of body conditioning," Hawkins said.

Before a match against Clovis West High a few weeks ago, some members of the Buchanan High varsity girls water polo team stood on the pool deck at their rival's facility. And, according to multiple witnesses, they peed. Didn't remove their suits or squat, witnesses said. Just stood there, peeing and giggling, doing enough of both to attract a little too much attention. One girl allegedly was overheard saying they were "marking their territory." Buchanan officials say they still are investigating. They won't say much else. But four girls, with one exception, haven't participated in a match since. The girls, all key players, confessed to their, um, outburst after the contest, sources said. Clovis West, the area's longtime power, nipped Buchanan 4-2 in the final of a 32-team tournament.
