Introducing Heathcliffe
Heathcliffe is a Water Dragon.
Not an ordinary lizard.
Heathcliffe is special.
He can swim, climb trees, run on his hind legs and do all sorts of things that ordinary lizards can't. He's also a very handsome lizard. He has black and green and brown stripes, and two splendid yellow splotches on his sides. When he sits still in the garden, you can hardly see him, he blends in so well with the background. He's also a very big lizard, nearly three feet long from the point of his nose to the tip of his long thin tail. He has spiky bits on his head and along his back. He thinks the spiky bits make him look very smart. Sometimes he looks at his reflection in the swimming pool and admires himself. Heathcliffe is very vain. He lives in a beautiful garden at a small hotel in Byron Bay. He's sure it's just the best place to live in the world. The Hotel is run by Alison, who looks after the guests and cooks the breakfasts, and by Ken, who takes care of the garden. The hotel is not very big. It was an old house, built nearly a hundred years ago. Last year, the builders changed the house from top to bottom. They knocked down old bits and painted everything in sight. They made an awful mess, but now it's all clean, shiny and peaceful again. It has a very big garden filled with palm trees and tropical plants and gum trees. There is a splendid swimming pool in the garden with deep blue tiles. Just the perfect place for a Water Dragon like Heathcliffe.

44. ROUGH GUIDE TO LIZARDS(2)
Agama spp). Agamids are actually a large family of lizards that also includes the Uromastyx, the Bearded dragon and water dragon.
http://www.nafcon.dircon.co.uk/lizards5.html
FROM NOVICE TO EXPERT….(2)
LEVEL 2: Just one or two drawbacks with these…..
Green or Brown Anoles ( Anolis spp
A lot of pet shops will have a tank of these small lizards, the green or brown anole. While not very demanding in terms of space, heat or lighting, small lizards do need smaller-sized prey, which is not always available. Furthermore, the small lizards always seem to be incredibly fast and tricky to catch hold of, and tend to hate being handled. A cage full of anoles makes a good display, if you don't mind a hands-off approach.
Small Skinks and Swifts (various, but mainly Eumeces spp Mabuya and Sceloropus spp
See the remarks about Green and Brown Anoles. If anything, Swifts are even quicker, acting rather like squirrels and chipmunks do, leaping from branch to branch (or shoulder to shoulder). The small skinks (eg Golden Skinks) are attractive creatures but have the same disadvantages, and in addition tend to spend a lot of time hiding until they get used to their surroundings. Both types also seem to come in many different varieties, which can be a bit confusing.
African Fat-Tailed Geckos ( Hemitheconyx caudicinctus
Although very similar to the Leopard Gecko (both belong the Eublepharid, or "eyelid" branch of the gecko family), African Fat-Tails are somewhat more delicate and prone to going on prolonged hunger strikes. Also, owing to the smaller availability of captive-bred stock, most are wild-caught. At least one shop I saw had lumped their Fat-Tail in with a Leopard Gecko (both male), which obviously did not suit either party. They are beautiful, but the doe-eyed appearance belies a determined bite if they feel threatened.

Several species of dragon lizards once occurred in woodland or heathland habitats along the harbour. Most of these have not adapted to intensive urban development and are now restricted to remnant areas of relatively undisturbed bushland or reserves, one of these, the Bearded Dragon, Pogona barbata , is now uncommon in the area. Only one, the Eastern Water Dragon, Physignathus lesueurii , still occurs commonly in the area. This large lizard species lives mainly along waterways and has adapted to a range of environments from the harbour foreshores to northern suburb gardens next to creeks. Volume 3 Number 2 March 1, 1999 Off to see the Lizards - by Laurie Fumea (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review) May 31, 1998 Even without Moe and Curly, Larry is quite a character. The
bearded dragon and his owner, Georgete Suskie of Johnstown, drew a crowd at a recent Pittsburgh Herpetological Society meeting in the education center of the Pittsburgh Zoo in Highland Park. "They're (bearded dragons) very personable," said Suskie, adding the demonstrations and programs she gives help "break down barriers" between the human and reptile worlds. And that's the main goal of the society - to foster an appreciation of all reptiles and amphibians through husbandry, conservation and education. Many of the group's monthly meetings feature speakers, such as Suskie and three others who recently presented programs - Swantje Willms of East Liberty (newts and salamanders), Allan Taylor of Swissvale (water dragons) and Dolly Ellerbrock of Morningside (giant common green iguanas).
The programs and tips are designed to educate reptile enthusiasts and potential owners. "I go over the basics about water dragons - what to look for and set up," said Taylor.
He said he enjoys the dragons because they are easy to maintain. "They handle very well," he said.

General: The inland or central bearded dragon ( Pogona vitticeps ) is rapidly becoming one of the most popular lizards in the pet trade. A moderate-sized lizard, attaining a maximum length of about 22 inches (half of which is tail), it has a melow dispostion and seems to enjoy interacting with humans. A native to south, central Australia (see range map at right) Pogona viticeps can be found in arid, rocky, semi-desert regions and arid open woodlands. They are diurnal (active during the day) and seem to fall asleep within minutes of the light going off in the evening. With proper care bearded dragons have lived for 10 years in captivity. Because of very restrictive wildlife export laws in Australia, all individuals available in the United States are captive bred from founder animals imported from Europe. Housing: Initially a relatively bare enclosure is preferred, either glass aquarium or large plastic enclosure. A screen cover is recommended, primarily to protect the lizard from children and / or other pets. Within the first year the dragon will grow to almost its full length, so while a 10 gallon aquarium may be suitable for a new hatchling, within 6 months or less the animal will require an enclosure 24 inches long (e.g., a 20 gallon long aquarium). As adults, a 50 gal tank (or larger) is preferable, especially if two or more animals are to be housed together. As adults bearded dragons love to climb branches and bask, be sure if several animals are housed in one large enclosure to provide multiple basking sites. They also benefit from having hiding spots. Females especially appreciate having a safe place to escape from the male's attentions during breeding season.

Sweet!!! My Parents and Grandparents are pretty cool people. They knew I was real unhappy about the confined living space I had for my lizards. Buddy had seriously outgrown his 65 gallon tank, and Cola, my Spiny Tail Iguana , could hardly turn around anymore in his tank. So....since larger tanks for both lizards was not a financial option, my creative family turned a computer desk into a customized home designed to fit the specific needs of BOTH my lizards!! Mom was the designer, she put this together in her head and had help from Eddie D., a student at the local high school, cutting the wood she needed. She and Grandpa actually put it together in a bedroom at my Grandparents house... Grandma is the phototgrapher, she takes all the pictures you see in my website. See Cola in his new home HERE Buddy is a seriously happy lizard now!

http://www.lizardheaven.com/water.htm
GENERAL
Chinese Water Dragons, Physignathus cocincinus, can make a wonderful pet! They are colorful, easy to handle, friendly, and don't grow to an unmanageble size. Large males can reach a total length of just over three feet; females are generally smaller. They are found naturally over much of Southeast Asia, including eastern Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and also in southern parts of China. Water Dragons are often found in riverine forests, where they stay close to water. They are aboreal lizards, are accomplished swimmers, and can run on their back legs!
HOUSING
SUBSTRATE
Water Dragons fare quite well on a mixture of potting soil and coarse sand, or "cage carpet" which is like Astroturf. If you use the cage carpet, make sure the edges are not frayed as this can be ingested and could cause impaction. Bed-A-Beast is another popular bedding of hobbyists and is available at most pet stores. When using any of the soil/Bed-A-Beast substrates, take care to keep their water container free of waste and debris and fresh at all times.
CAGE FURNITURE
Since Water Dragons are aboreal lizards, large branches for climbing and basking are a necessity. They should be

Enclosures
For indoor enclosures I would suggest a minimum size of 2'x4'x4' (Width x Length x Height). Hiding places and branches in one half of the enclosure and the other half should have a water bowl and a sandy area (imitation of a beach or river bank). The water bowl must be in a position where it can be cleaned very easily, as they defecate in the water. This may sound like a problem, but in fact it makes things easier for you as now the whole terrarium stays clean. You only have to clean the water bowl regularly. Be sure the lizards can get in and out of the water easily. I use those things in which you can dip your paint-roller to pick up paint, which are ideal for the lizards. A terrarium which is transparant all around either with screening or glass will make your young water dragon nervous. A terrarium which has only a transparant front and in the back enough hiding places will prevent stressing. After the new lizard is put in his terrarium, it is best to leave and not touch it for a day or so, untill the lizard has learned where to hide in case of danger. Then he will feel secure and will be much less nervous. Older water dragons are not so easily stressed, but will still be more comfortable in such an enclosure.

Publication Date: 21 April 2003 ITIS TNS Google The Chinese or green water dragon, Physignathus cocincinus , is a large arboreal lizard that inhabits the forests of eastern Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, and southern parts of China. Water dragons live in the immediate vicinity of fresh water. They are aptly named as they are strong swimmers and can remain submerged for 25 minutes or more. Water dragons use their swimming abilities and facultative bipedality to escape predators. Today, Physignathus cocincinus is one of the most popular lizards in the pet trade, which is where this specimen originated.
