WILD AND DOMESTIC ANIMALS
Wild and domestic animals represent a serious health risk through bites, scratches, goring or other trauma, or by simple contact. Rats and mice attracted to human shelters and waste dumps may carry plague and other serious diseases. Rabies is a common problem in dogs and cats. Livestock, goats in particular, may carry anthrax as well as other serious diseases. Veterinary care is almost non-existent in Haiti, so all animals, wild or domestic, should be considered diseased and dangerous. Control Measures. Because of the possibility of acquiring serious disease or receiving traumatic injury from animals in Haiti, soldiers should avoid contact with both wild and domestic animals. Sanitary disposal of food and other waste material will help to avoid attracting animals and insects. It is also important to protect water supplies from animals. Animals and birds will drink from the taps of water containers and contaminate water supplies. Although US military personnel are known for making pets of various animals while deployed, the magnitude of the health threat requires that this practice must be forbidden. First aid for bites and scratches from animals should include cleaning the wound with soap and uncontaminated water. Because of the possibility of rabies

What weights over 1000 pounds, looks a bit like a walrus with wrinkled, gray-brown, spongy skin, is sometimes called a "sea cow", is related to an elephant, was mistaken for mermaids, can eat more than 100 pounds of vegetables per day, and travels an average of 3 to 5 miles per hour? Why the manatee, of course! These large animals were once thought to be related to walrus because of the way they look. Today, scientists are able to identify animals using genetics. Now they know that manatees are more closely related to elephants than any other living animal. Scientists believe that manatees evolved from land mammals that returned to an aquatic life. Manatees are large marine mammals weighing up to 2000 pounds and reaching more than 12 feet in length. Like whales, their large bodies can only be supported in their watery environment. On land, their body weight would crush their internal organs. Manatees are the only marine mammals that are herbivores. Just to keep their big bodies warm, they have to eat up to one tenth of their body weight every day. For the typical manatee that means more than 100 pounds of water plants! That's equal to more than 200 heads of lettuce!

The aquatic biome can be broken down into two basic regions, freshwater (i.e, ponds and rivers) and marine (i.e, oceans and estuaries). Freshwater Regions
    Ponds and Lakes
The topmost zone near the shore of a lake or pond is the littoral zone The near-surface open water surrounded by the littoral zone is the limnetic zone . The limnetic zone is well-lighted (like the littoral zone) and is dominated by plankton, both phytoplankton and zooplankton. Plankton are small organisms that play a crucial role in the food chain. Without aquatic plankton, there would be few living organisms in the world, and certainly no humans. A variety of freshwater fish also occupy this zone. profundal zone . This zone is much colder and denser than the other two. Little light penetrates all the way through the limnetic zone into the profundal zone. The fauna are heterotrophs, meaning that they eat dead organisms and use oxygen for cellular respiration. Streams and Rivers

The Nile River is possibly the most famous river in history. It was by its banks that one of the oldest civilizations in the world began. Not surprisingly, the Nile teems with life. Many different types of animals, birds, and fish all call the Nile River home. Hundreds of years ago, even hippos and lions could be found here in the Nile Valley. The crocodile's eyes and nostrils are on top of the head so it can see and breathe while the rest of it is underwater. As an added advantage, its ears and nostrils can close when it dives, and a nictitating membrane (a transparent eyelid) closes over the eye to keep water out. Nile Crocodiles range all over Africa, eating almost anything (including each other!), but rarely moving away from their chosen body of water. Hatchlings eat small fish and insects; adults will go after turtles, baboons, and even the gigantic wildebeest. They live in large "communities" of several dozen crocodiles, but even there they tend to leave each other alone except during a "feeding frenzy" when they will all unite to take down a much larger animal. These are all pictures taken along various parts of the Nile and the Nile Valley. Some of them are of the animals, while others are of the country around them. Isn't it beautiful? The Nile Valley is home to so many creatures we wouldn't be able to see them all, but here is a good collection for you to see.

Unlike other felines, who stalk, then pounce on their prey for the kill, cheetahs, the fastest four-footed animals alive, run down their prey. Their lesson to us is that of accomplishing our goals with speed and focus. When we feel stuck, cheetah medicine can launch us into motion. If we are moving with great speed but little direction, cheetah energy helps us to keep our eyes on our goals and to find the most direct way of achieving them. Recommended for:

CHI-ES Chimpanzee Living in Harmony. Chimpanzees are close to humans on the evolutionary scale, and the medicine of this animal can help to restore to us the simple ways of life that create joy. Chimpanzee medicine can nurture in us playfulness, curiosity, and self expression. It also fosters our ability to be full members of the human and natural community. Recommended for:

Nigel Marven has made numerous wildlife documentary films for BBC and ITV , most recently 'Giants', a round-the-world odyssey in search of the largest predators. He spends about five months each year seeking wild animals to film. Surviving wild animals by Nigel Marven
The image of its mouth is forever burned into my consciousness - it was smiling with a clownish grin. This rictus smile was fixed, so the teeth were always on show. The great white shark was thrilling, more like a jet fighter than a fish. If it wanted to it could have given me a devastating, perhaps lethal, bite. I wasn't in a cage and a wetsuit was my only protection (my companion André Hartman had a spear gun, but it didn't work). I didn't want this encounter to end, but after a while the great white became a little too curious and André gave it a sharp rap on the nose with his heavy camera housing and sent it on its way. This sequence was the finale to a film I produced about the world's largest sharks. My purpose was to show that great whites are not malicious monsters with a taste for human flesh. But then they're not harmless herbivores either - there is no doubt they have the potential to eat us, and that's what makes them so exciting, one of the last predators of humanity.

Wild Burro
Equus asinus
Range Throughout all of the North American deserts.
Habitat
Wild Burros range through a wide variety of desert habitats as along as they are within 10 miles of drinking water.
Description
The Wild Burro was first introduced into the Desert Southwest by Spaniards in the 1500s. Wild Burros have long ears, a short mane and reach a height of up to 5 feet at the shoulders. They vary in color from black to brown to gray. Originally from Africa (where they were called the Wild Ass) these pack animals were prized for their hardiness in arid country. They are sure-footed, can locate food in barren terrain and can carry heavy burdens for days through hot, dry environments. Wild Burros can tolerate a water loss as much as 30% of their body weight, and replenish it in only 5 minutes drinking. (Humans require medical attention if 10% of body weight is lost to dehydration and require a full day of intermittent drinking to replenish this loss.)
Habits
Wild Burros feed on a variety of of plants, including grasses, Mormon Tea, Palo Verde and Plantain. Although some moisture is provided by these plant materials, Wild Burros must have drinking water throughout the year. They can usually be seen foraging for food during daytime, except for summers, when they will forage only at night and in the early morning.
Life Cycle
Female Wild Burros give birth to one colt each year, which grows to an average weight of about 350 pounds. Since the Wild Burro has no natural predator, competitor or common diseases, most young burros reach maturity and may live as long as 25 years in the wild.

jsmith6@olivet.edu TASK PROCESS AFRICAN ANIMALS EVALUATION ... CONCLUSION INTRODUCTION A new zoo is opening soon in your town. The new zoo officials have agreed upon a plan to develop a section of the zoo that will display only animals found in African deserts and savannas. The officials have selected your group to go on an African safari and have asked that you bring back various facts about different animals. The officials want your group to present the information in three days, so your safari is limited to two days. ENJOY YOUR TRIP! TASK You have arrived at your destination in Africa. You only have two days, so you and your group are going to have to go in different directions to find as many animals as possible. For the next two days, you're going to travel parts of Africa, and you will be discovering different wildlife along the way. After your safari, you'll return and give a presentation to educate the officials on what the animals of the African deserts and savannas are like and how to care for them. PROCESS 1. Your group will need to decide who will gather information about each of the animals listed below. Just click on the animal name.

http://www.david.element.ukgateway.net/stgeorgeswebpage1.htm
The following animal species have been recorded in the grounds of St. George's Hospital, London. BLUE-TAILED DAMSELFLY Ischnura elegans
  • This common damselfly probably breeds in the Lambert Water Garden pond. The female (shown) has several different colour forms. It is highly likely that other still-water dragonfly species will locate and use this delightful pond for breeding purposes.
FIELD GRASSHOPPER Chorthippus brunneus
  • Field Grasshoppers favour warm, bare patches of ground. Their cryptic coloration makes them rather hard to spot.
CLOUDED YELLOW BUTTERFLY Colias croceus
  • Two examples of this lovely migrant were seen on Buddleia during the substantial invasion of 1983. It is possible that this species may appear during 2003 following a strong migration from Europe.
POPLAR HAWK MOTH Laothoe populi
  • This large species, the commonest native British hawk moth, breeds on poplar trees. Some of the larger poplars at St. George's have recently been felled to make way for site development. A splendid example of this species and two closely related LIME HAWK MOTHS Mimas tiliae were found in the Hospital corridors recently.

The Animals of ARK 2000
Overview of the Animals
The animals at Ark 2000 are formerly abused and/or surplus animals in need of a home. It is not our goal to breed the animals in our care or to build collections of species. Instead, animals are taken in by PAWS according to individual circumstances and with consideration given to whether PAWS can give them a quality life. Although no captive situation can ever replace the wild, Ark 2000 will as closely as possible replicate the wild habitats of the various species given sanctuary here. We envision the day when there will no longer be a need for the Ark 2000 sanctuary, and the land can be totally returned to native wildlife.
African Elephant
In the wild, African elephants drink and bathe daily, abstaining only for a few days at a time when ranging far from a water source. Baths involve rolling and wallowing in the shallows or submerging completely in deep water. At Ark 2000 , a small tributary to the South Fork of the Calaveras River will be dammed to form an elephant lake that will allow the animals to maintain these natural activities.
