Splashing Sports Safety Tips
A ship in the harbor is safe, but that's not what ships are built for.
-John A. Shedd Sometimes water related activities can be dangerous, but for the most part, following a few simple safety suggestions will help athletes avoid injury. Whether playing in the pool, revving up for a day of skiing, or donning a helmet in preparation for a wild white water trip, those embarking on an aquatic adventure should take a few logical precautions. Although these ideas are not a full collection of safety information from the Coast Guard, we suggest using these common sense tactics to help your family avoid injury.
1 - Always wear a lifejacket when in or around the water.
Even the strongest swimmers can get in bad situations. A young girl with several years of water ski training and lifeguarding nearly drown at a local wave pool due to her inabilty to fight the overpowering waves. She never imagined that something would overcome her ability to swim after she had recovered from numerous intense falls on water skis, but the pressure from the waves was so great that the girl had to be rescued by three life guards. She was throroughly embarrassed as sputtered her thanks to the rescuers. The moral of this story: even the best of swimmers should wear a life vest when playing around the water. Although when conscious and calm they may be able to swim 5 miles, a person who is injured or upset may need the extra flotation to help them survive until help comes.

  • Tell someone where you are going, when you expect to return, and where to call if you don't.
  • Be sure your white water skills and experience are equal to the river and the conditions. NEVER BOAT ALONE.
  • Wear a Coast Guard approved type III - V, properly adjusted lifejacket at all times when you are in or near the river.

  • Reduce injuries by wearing protective foot wear and proper clothing designed for river running.
  • Helmets are required for Kayakers and canoeists at all times. Rafters must wear helmets in Class IV and above water.
  • Be prepared for extremes in weather, especially cold. Know about the dangers of hypothermia and how to deal with it. When air and water temperature add up to 120 degrees or less, hyperthermia is a high risk. Wear a wet suit and booties in spring to early summer and always in Class V water. Know early signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and dehydration in hot weather. Remember certain medications can complicate these types of environmental injuries.

Desert Safety Tips
Carry Plenty of Water There are no dependable sources of water in the desert regions. One gallon of water per person, per day is the absolute minimum that should be carried. When planning a hike, remember that water weighs approximately 8 pounds per gallon. When the water is half gone, it is time to turn back. Don't forget extra water for your vehicle. DO NOT RATION YOUR WATER. It will only do you good if you drink it. Plan Your Trip Carefully Always tell someone where you are going and when you will return. Stick with your itinerary, and let them know when you return. Do not travel in the desert backcountry without taking along appropriate maps such as USGS topographic maps, which show land contours and specific features. Learn how to use a topographic map and a compass before you hike cross-country or on trails that are not well defined. It is easy to become disoriented in the desert where many landmarks and rock formations look similar. Dress Properly In summer, layered clothing slows dehydration and minimizes exposure. Good hiking shoes, loose fitting natural-fiber clothing, a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are a must. Desert temperatures can reach over 90 and drop below 50 F. in one day. Summer temperatures can reach 125

Don't underestimate water's danger
Many people enjoy water sports. Boating, personal watercrafts (jet-skis) and tubing are fun ways to play, especially during hot weather.
Tragic water accidents happen quickly. The most common reason for these accidents is lack of safety knowledge. Remember, never underestimate water's ability to take your life.
PLAY IT SAFE USE PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICES (PFDs)!
Boating
A majority of boating deaths are due to capsizing, falling overboard and collisions.
Boat Safely
  • 75 percent of all deaths on the water involve people who do not wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD, also known as life vests).
  • Make sure there is one PFD for each person on the boat.
  • Wear a PFD at all times, even when getting in and out of the boat.
  • Choose the right size. Children need a child-sized vest that fits snugly.
  • Choose the right PFD for your activity:
Type 1: Float best. Will turn an unconscious person face up. Use in open, rough water when rescue may be slow in arriving. Type 1 devices only come in two sizes: adults weighing over 90 lbs. and children weighing less than 90 pounds.

Water Watchers at Phoenix Children's Hospital
Injury Prevention Center
On May 31, 1998, Weston Letter drowned in his family's swimming pool. Family members and friends of the Letter family began Water Watchers to honor Weston's memory and teach the community that tragedy knows no boundaries.
Weston was like any other child: his family worked hard to protect him, and never thought that drowning would happen to them. When we remember the boy who loved dragonflies, fire trucks, and M and M's, we allow something good to come from the pain of his loss. Water Watchers and it's signature event, Water Day, celebrates the special boy that he was, keeping his memory in our hearts and minds and reminds all of us that drownings can happen to any family.
Water Watchers at Phoenix Children's Hospital exists to increase community education and awareness of the issue of child drownings, and to help the community learn more about drownings through research. How do we do this?
  • Through direct children's educational efforts, like Water Safety Day. In 2003, more than 3500 children attended Water Safety Day and received a one-of-a-kind lesson in drowning prevention.
