    http://www.californiadelta.org/waterski.htm
W ater skiing is a prime California Delta sport, something done year round here albeit, with a wetsuit or drysuit in the winter. Of course, each water skier has his or her own preferred California Delta waterways, places that are ideal for what they like to do. Some of the favorite water skiing areas in the Delta are in the South Delta, including waters of Old River, Middle River, Grantline Canal and Victoria Cut. There are strong water-skiing clubs in this area, one or more with ski jumps and slalom courses. Some stage competitive events. The Discovery Bay area represents a hotbed of water-skiing activity. Some of the best skiers in the world either hail from this area or train here. W hen we use the word "water skiing" here, we consider it inclusive also of wake boarding. For there are many who practice both sports out of the same boat. From the standpoint of the waterways, the needs of aficionados of both sports are similar. (And let us not forget barefooting, of which there are many practitioners in the California Delta, some of them teenagers who grew up as tykes skimming across the waters on their bare footsies.) But I think of the waterskiing here as being more of a "neighborhood" sport. There are skiers in the North Delta who feel there is no finer place in the world for water-skiing than in the lightly trafficked dead-end Snodgrass Slough

    2003 Water Safety Conference
    22 September 2003
(Check against delivery) Thank you Rob. Justice Terence Higgins; Ron Rankin; Australian Water Safety Council member bodies; Delegates; ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to you, the 110 delegates, who have travelled from around the country, and New Zealand, to lend your expertise and experience to the 2003 Water Safety Conference. It's a great pleasure to see gathered together so many individuals who have done so much to keep us safe each summer. The setting of this conference could not be more appropriate. Bondi is one of the world's great symbols of swimming and water sports. The home of the world's first official surf lifesaving club, it is an Australian icon. It is also, however, a modern beach and a place where the latest thinking on water safety can be given practical expression-just as it is given expression at numerous locations right around the country, by the organisations represented here today. As a nation with fantastic beaches and inland waterways-and the climate to go with them-it is no wonder that Australia is at the forefront of water safety research and practice.

    General Water Safety
Summer is here and that means swimming and other water sports begin to rise in popularity. Unfortunately, with the abundance of bodies of water and swimming pools all over the states, we have a high rate of drowning fatality. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children under the age of four, and most childhood drownings occur in residential pools 1. Learn to swim. The best thing anyone can do to stay safe in and around the water is to learn to swim. 2. Always swim with a buddy; never swim alone. 3. Know your swimming limits and stay within them. Don't try to keep up with a stronger, skilled swimmer or encourage others to keep up with you. 4. Swim in supervised areas only. Never let children swim in unsupervised areas like quarries, canals, or ponds. Older kids are at risk of drowning when they overestimate their ability or underestimate how deep the water is. 5. Obey "No Diving" signs that indicate the area is unsafe for headfirst entries. Enter feet-first into water rather than headfirst if you don't know the depth. In addition, learn the correct way to dive from a qualified instructor.

Where do children drown? A study published in the July 2001 issue of Pediatrics reports that infants are most likely to drown in bathtubs, toddlers in swimming pools, and older children in other freshwater sites such as rivers and lakes . The study of 1,420 children was funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Do not depend on baby bath seats or rings to protect your child. Your child can slip out of the seat and down into the water, and bath rings can tip over. Toddlers aren't strong enough to lift themselves back out of a toilet, bucket, container or wading pool. Consider using a toilet safety latch, don't ever leave your baby alone in the tub, not even to answer the telephone, and empty all containers and wading pools, and store them out of reach. Swimming lessons for toddlers: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against swimming instruction for children under 4 years old. In some areas, drowning is the number one cause of death in children under age 5. Children drown in pools, rivers, bathtubs, toilets, and even large buckets of water. Any amount of water - even a few inches in a bathtub - can be dangerous.

Contact Us Water Safety In 1996, nearly 1,000 children younger than 15 years of age drowned in the United States. It is surprising to many parents that young children tend not to splash or make noise when they get into trouble in the water and thus usually drown silently. An adult should always be watching young children playing, swimming, or bathing in water.
    Safety Tips
Tips for General Water Safety You can greatly reduce the chances of you and your children becoming a drowning victim or being injured if you follow a few simple safety tips: 1. Make sure an adult is constantly watching young children swimming, playing, or bathing in water. Do not read, play cards, talk on the phone, mow the lawn, or do any other distracting activity while supervising children around water. 2. Never swim alone or in unsupervised places. Teach your children to always swim with a buddy. 3. Keep small children away from buckets containing liquid: 5-gallon industrial containers are a particular danger. Be sure to empty buckets of all liquid when household chores are done. An infant or toddler can drown in as little as one inch of water.
