The State of New Mexico's authority to regulate the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant ( WIPP ) for the protection of human health and the environment is governed under the New Mexico Hazardous Waste Act ( HWA ) and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act ( RCRA ). Under RCRA, State programs are authorized to operate in lieu of the Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA
On October 27, 1999, the New Mexico Environment Department ( NMED ) issued a final decision to grant a Hazardous Waste Facility Permit to WIPP for the storage and disposal of transuranic mixed waste. This web site provides the public with information regarding NMED's implementation of the permit, including permit modifications at the request of the Permittees, currently the US Department of Energy ( DOE ) Carlsbad Field Office ( CBFO ) and Washington TRU Solutions LLC. News May 21, 2004 - NMED approved a request for temporary authorization to store up to 28 TRUPACT-II shipping containers in the Parking Area Unit ( PAU
The Permit was temporarily modified as a result of this administrative action, but reverted back to its original state on Tuesday, May 25, 2004.

Polystyrene Recycling - Long Term Market Trends
... Polystyrene Benefits, Performance and the Environment EASE OF DISPOSAL According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the July 2001 publication "Municipal Solid Waste in the United States 1999 Facts and Figures," less than one percent (about 0.6 percent) of solid waste disposed of in the U.S. is polystyrene packaging - including both food service packaging (cups, plates, bowls, trays, clamshells, meat trays, egg cartons, yogurt and cottage cheese containers, and cutlery) and protective packaging (shaped end pieces used to ship electronic goods and loose fill "peanuts"). The disposal of polystyrene is managed safely and effectively through the waste management hierarchy advocated by the U.S. EPA, which includes: Source Reduction, Reuse, Recycling, Waste-to-Energy Recovery, and Landfilling. Source Reduction Source reduction means less waste in the first place. Most source reduction occurs as part of the manufacturing process.

Sign Senator Cantwell's petition and tell DOE and the U.S. Senate to say no to cutting corners on nuclear waste cleanup.

Radioactive and toxic wastes are already moving towards the Columbia River. Over a million gallons have leaked from the High-Level Nuclear Waste tanks at Hanford. The U.S. Dept. of Energy plans to ship 70,000 Truckloads of Radioactive Waste to Hanford.
, being stuck in traffic next to one shipment is equivalent to multiple full body x-rays per hour. Hanford is already the most contaminated nuclear site in the Western hemisphere.
The U.S. Dept. of Energy continues to add more waste to unlined burial grounds that are releasing carcinogenic and poisonous chemicals.

For more information or reports on the risks from Hanford becoming a National Radioactive Waste Dump, visit Heart of America Northwest.

Environmental Links Household Hazardous Waste Program When you look in your garage, under your sink, in the basement or shed, do you see lots of old paint cans, jugs of used motor oil and antifreeze, unwanted pesticides, containers of dirty paint thinner, and other unusable household chemicals? If you answered "Yes," you may be ready for a household hazardous waste (HHW) collection. Tennessee has a mobile HHW collection service that goes from county to county every Saturday from mid-March to mid-November. If you are a resident of Knox Hamilton , or Davidson counties, you may take your HHW to one of the permanent collection sites located in your county. Note: Nashville's HHW facility is open seven days a week throughout the year minus holidays. Nashville has lowered its over all cost from $293,000 in FY 2000 to $149,000 in FY 2002 while at the same time increasing customers from 1,500 to 5,800 per year? For more information about Davidson County's HHW facility please call 615-862-8680.
