Welcome
Simply throwing waste away means that we are discarding valuable resources. Waste items can often be repaired and reused or recycled into new, useful items.
Reducing, reusing and recycling YOUR waste prevents the environmental damage that is caused by mining or otherwise extracting fresh natural resources from the Earth. It can also prevent the pollution that is caused by the manufacturing process and saves valuable energy. This in turn can help prevent global climate change.
Find out how you can Reduce Reuse and Recycle your waste by visiting :

Scotland's National Waste Plan is a blueprint for the future, providing challenging but realistic objectives for the sustainable management of Scotland's waste. It forms the keystone of the National Waste Strategy: Scotland, and is about the real behavioural change required to minimise the waste we generate and the opportunities that will stem from this.
Separating resource use from economic growth is a major challenge to sustainable development, particularly in relation to waste. In Scotland we dispose of more than 90% of our municipal or domestic waste in landfill sites, together with much of our waste from industry, commerce, construction and other sources.
Disposing of our waste in this manner is a massive misuse of resources, not to mention the impact it has on the environment through emission of greenhouse and other gases.

    Waste
In New Zealand, we tend to think that rubbish or waste is something we throw away. But in fact most of the waste produced is simply moved out of sight - at best it is changed to take up less space in a tip or landfill, poured down the drain, or released to the air. In March 2002 the New Zealand Waste Strategy was launched. This was the result of a partnership between the Ministry for the Environment and Local Government New Zealand . The strategy sets a new direction for minimising the country's waste and for improving its recovery and management. In these pages you will find information on the Ministry for the Environment's various programmes on waste. This information is designed to help you take responsibility for minimising and properly managing your waste.

    Amargosa Desert Research Site
In 1976, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began studies of unsaturated zone hydrology at a site in the Amargosa Desert near Beatty, Nevada, as part of the USGS Low-Level Radioactive Waste Program. Over the years, USGS investigations at the Amargosa Desert Research Site (ADRS) have provided long-term benchmark information about the hydraulic characteristics and soil-water movement for both natural-site conditions and simulated waste-site conditions in an arid environment. In 1995, as a result of finding elevated concentrations of tritium and carbon-14 in the unsaturated zone beneath the ADRS, the scope of research was broadened to include the study of processes affecting transport of contaminants through the unsaturated zone. The ADRS was incorporated into the USGS Toxic Substances Hydrology Program in 1997. Research at the site is a multidisciplinary, collaborative effort that presently involves scientists from the USGS, universities, research institutes, and national laboratories. Rising consumption generates more and more waste
The amount of waste each of us produces is rising steadily with rising consumption. From 1974 to 1999, the amount of household waste produced per person in Norway rose by 80 per cent, from 174 kg to 314 kg per year. Economic growth has resulted in higher production and consumption, and is the most important driving force behind the growing quantities of waste. During the 1990s, there was also a steep rise in the amount of waste used for material recovery (recycling materials such as paper, plastic and metal from waste) Waste and waste treatment contribute to a number of environmental problems, for example emissions of greenhouse gases, heavy metals and other environmentally hazardous chemicals.
    Hazardous waste contains dangerous substances
Hazardous waste is the term used for waste containing chemicals that are hazardous to health or the environment. It cannot be dealt with together with ordinary consumer waste because of the risk of serious pollution or injury to people or animals. We now know more about the dangerous properties of many chemicals. More and more hazardous chemicals that were once disposed of on landfills are now collected and treated properly. For example, electrical and electronic waste such as televisions and fridges is now collected so that the equipment can be dismantled and parts containing hazardous waste removed.
