Site navigation Defra home page Environment Protection Introduction: Waste in the UK What happens to waste? ... Contacts Everyone produces waste, in England and Wales industry, commerce and households produce over 100 million tonnes each year. This is growing at around 3% each year. While waste cannot be eliminated, we can reduce its environmental impact by preventing waste wherever possible, and making more sustainable use of the waste that is produced. The Government set out its vision for sustainable waste management in Waste Strategy 2000, the national waste strategy. England recycles or composts just 12 percent of its household waste - one of the lowest rates in Europe - and our target is to increase this to 25% by 2005/2006. We are also committed to reducing the amount of biodegradable municipal waste landfilled, in accordance with European Directives. For information about the issues surrounding recycling and waste, and the actions we are taking, see the following sections:

Waste For most of us, waste is the bags of household rubbish that leave our households every week. We know that it ‘goes somewhere’ – but few have actually seen a landfill site, a waste incineration plant, or a recycling centre, and most of us do not give it much more thought. Household waste is in fact a small proportion of the mountain of waste generated every year. The problem is that this mountain is growing in step with Europe’s economy. Moreover, in many countries waste is still not being treated properly – biodegradeable waste is being landfilled when it could be broken down biologically, for example, while heavy metals are leaking out of waste dumps into the environment. Most waste streams will probably increase over the next decade. The biggest policy challenge is thus to achieve prevention of waste generation. webmaster@eea.eu.int

Related Category: Environmental Studies solid waste, discarded materials other than fluids. In the United States in 1996, nearly 210 million tons : about 4.3 lb. (2 kg) per person daily (up from 2.7 lb./1.2 kg in 1960) : were collected and disposed of by municipalities. In that year, municipal garbage included 12.4 million tons of glass and about 80 million tons of paper and paperboard (by far the largest constituent); in addition enormous tonnages of food residues, yard trimmings, textiles, plastics, and sludge formed in sewage treatment were produced. Although the amount of the increase has been slowed somewhat by recycling and composting programs and improvements in packaging, the amount of solid waste continues to increase annually. Moreover, the most common disposal methods pollute land, water, or air to some degree (see pollution ). Management of solid waste therefore presents an increasingly acute problem.
