New York's Telfair Becomes Eighth Player to Declare for Draft This Year By Greg Sandoval and Dan Steinberg
Washington Post Staff Writers
Wednesday, May 5, 2004; Page D01 An unprecedented number of talented high school basketball players say they want to enter the NBA draft, including Sebastian Telfair, a 5-foot-11 guard from New York who yesterday became the eighth highly regarded senior to announce that he intends to skip college. The number of prep players could grow by four as the May 10 early draft entry deadline approaches and as many as seven players could be picked in the first round, according to NBA scouts. Last year, four high school seniors were among the 29 players drafted in the first round, including LeBron James, the No. 1 pick. "I'm on cloud-40 right now," Telfair said yesterday at a news conference. "My dreams have come true and all my goals have come true."

By Ylan Q. Mui
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, May 6, 2004; Page B02 Maryland's Board of Public Works yesterday approved $126 million for new school buildings and renovation in the coming year, $50 million more than the panel granted in January but far less than some school districts say they need. The school construction total covers 106 projects, including new campuses in almost every Washington area school district. It also provides money to build science labs in high schools and add classrooms to comply with a state mandate that all kindergartners attend a full day of school by 2008, said David Lever, executive director of the Public School Construction Program. An additional $1.6 million will go to improve aging schools. Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R), who sits on the three-member Board of Public Works, said the state's school construction budget was up 8 percent from last year. "I know that the condition of school facilities is a critical component to a first-class education," he said in a statement. But Montgomery County Council President Steven A. Silverman (D-At Large) called the allocation "a slap in the face." School crowding has become a chronic issue in the growing county, which Silverman said requested nearly $60 million for construction projects. The state's final tally includes about $9 million.

Learning Home Welcome to the Educational Resources section of our website.
As home to over 135,000 copies of manuscripts dealing with the life of George Washington, we've recently begun a program to provide primary materials and lessons for teachers for use with their classes. High school and middle-school age students can link to our twelve-slide overview, with accompanying primary materials and questions. These resources can work on several levels. First, the twelve slides themselves provide a general chronology of the life of George Washington as well as secondary information on the larger historical context. From here we hope you'll link to the accompanying primary document and questions. Manuscripts like Washington's school book exercises, an address to the Senate, his will and others give students the chance to examine the life and times of a leading figure in American history firsthand and in greater depth. Finally, throughout the lessons, we've tried to communicate just what it is that "historians" do by referring to the editing process along the way and giving students a chance to try their own hand at a transcription. GW: Kids GW: In the News is a regularly updated series of mini-lessons linking George Washington and early American history to current events. Each background slide provides information on a contemporary situation and the context of the controversy as it relates to Washington's own experience. Users may then link to a relevant primary GW document and questions. These brief lessons are designed as "bell ringers" for students of a wide range of ages, dependent upon content material.
