Volume 1, Issue 1 Print Version Commentaries Submit A Commentary Carroll, T. G. (2000). If we didn't have the schools we have today,
would we create the schools we have today? Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education [Online serial], (1). Available: http://www.citejournal.org/vol1/iss1/currentissues/general/article1.htm Thomas G. Carroll
U.S. Department of Education We have a unique opportunity in education today. Massive funds are pouring into the technology infrastructure of K-12 schools. It is estimated that $7 billion a year is being spent to equip schools with infrastructure, networking activities, and hardware. Pilots in the early stages of flight crashed a lot of planes, but they also discovered the principles of flight. They came together in learning communities where they could share their experiences and knowledge about what works and what does not work. They developed and evolved principles that make modern flight possible today, including the space program. That kind of learning opportunity is available to us in our schools today. The question in the title of this article is If we continue to prepare teachers as we have always prepared them, we are going to continue to recreate the schools we have always had. We have to start preparing teachers differently. If we are going to continue preparing educators to work as solo, stand-alone teachers in self-contained, isolated classrooms, we are going to perpetuate the schools we have today.

University of Washington Schools of Medicine and Nursing and Harborview Medical Center Awarded $371,150 Grant for Innovations in Palliative Care in Intensive Care Setting
Project Will Improve Quality of Palliative Care for Patients and Their Families in Seven Intensive Care Units (ICUs) March 3, 2003 Download PDF version (150 KB) Promoting Excellence in End-of-Life Care program. The project will use the funds to improve the quality of palliative care for all patients and their families in seven distinct ICUs (Medical, Trauma, Neurosurgical, Burn, Surgical, Coronary and Pediatric ICUs). Although many Americans receive highly skilled, state-of-the-art care in ICUs, experts increasingly recognize that critically ill patients also can benefit from palliative services. The Promoting Excellence program supports demonstration projects that integrate high-quality palliative care services in ICUs, improve care for critically ill patients and their families and assess the effectiveness of the interventions.

Washington Phlebotomist Schools
Washington Phlebotomist Schools : A directory of information about Washington schools offering phlebotomist training that can help you decide which phlebotomist school is best for you. Phlebotomist schools provide you with training in venipuncture and capillary collection. Phlebotomist schools provide courses in general medical science as well as the writing and computer skills necessary to work as a phlebotomist. Classroom work is complemented by clinical laboratory courses that allow students to work as a phlebotomist in the lab before having to do so on the job. In many cases, this is further enhanced by an internship experience at a site that works in conjunction with the schools. A phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood from patients according to doctor's instructions, separating the blood into different test tubes so that it can be used in different tests, accurately labeling the tubes, and insuring that the right samples are sent to the lab. To do this, the phlebotomist must have very steady hands and be very precise and detail oriented, as errors can cause incorrect medical diagnoses and treatment. The phlebotomist must also have excellent people skills in order to help the patient remain calm and relaxed. A phlebotomist can find work in a doctor's office, lab, clinic, blood center, nursing homes or insurance office. For information on where you can receive phlebotomist training, please check out the list of Washington phlebotomist schools

By Jim McElhatton
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Two D.C. public school principals yesterday testified that incompetent security guards are not fired, but instead reassigned within the school system, and a PTA member said some guards fraternize with the students they are hired to protect.
The testimony came during a D.C. Council hearing that probed the school system's multimillion-dollar contract with Watkins Security Inc., which has come under scrutiny since the shooting death of a student inside a Southeast high school last month.
"They really don't come with any kind of skills to deal with conflict," Cardozo High School Principal Reginald Ballard said of some private security guards at his school. "They're afraid of the students they have to deal with."
Steve Tarason, principal of Wilson High School, said he recently asked that two security guards be removed from his school because "one slept a lot and another one was afraid of the students."
However, Mr. Tarason and Mr. Ballard said such guards rarely are fired, but routinely reassigned to other schools.

  • FAQs Search Engine General Information Welcome to a new database of inclusion teaching and learning resources and strategies. This project is funded by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction in Washington State . It is designed to disseminate information related to inclusion resources, best practices, strategies, and research. What Is Inclusion? Inclusion considers that all students are full members of the school community and are entitled to the opportunities and responsibilities that are available to all students in the school. In an inclusive school setting, students with disabilities are provided specially designed instruction in their least restrictive environment (LRE). LRE varies according to the individual needs and goals of each student. In order to determine the LRE, federal laws require that the individualized educational program (IEP) committee first develop the individual goals for the student, then determine how and where the student's goals can be met. Berkeley Parents Network Reviews K-12 Schools Berkeley Public Schools > Washington Elementary School Jan 2003 Can anyone recommend 2nd grade teachers at Washington or Thousand Oaks who are good with bright students? Our first- grader son is way beyond grade-level in reading and math. He currently goes to Washington, but we are also considering trying to transfer to Thousand Oaks which is closer to our house. Leo Hi- I am looking into Washington and Cragmont for my daughter and am interested in getting feedback from parents regarding the school community and quality of upper grade teachers. Thank you- Jackie We've been happy with our son's experience at Washington School. The principal is very energetic, as is the magnet coordinator. There's a spirit of real caring among the staff. The school's location, near downtown Berkeley, allows for wonderful enrichment activities: the kids walk to the Y for swim lessons (funded by the PTA), walk to Zellerbach for performances. My child has had excellent teachers K-3. The school's diverse population (including English learners) seems to function well together. As with many schools, there are a few teachers we would avoid at Washington. I've worked on school committees and find that a good way to know the teachers and to make sure the staff knows my child. I think Washington deserves a much better reputation than it has. sandra

The Fairfax County School Board is charged by the statutes of Virginia and the regulations of the Virginia Board of Education to provide and operate the public schools of Fairfax County. It is the function of the Board to set general school policy and, within the framework of Virginia Board of Education regulations, to establish guidelines that will ensure the proper administration of the county school program. School Board members are paid a salary of $12,000 per year, with an additional $1,000 for the chairman. The twelve School Board members are elected for four-year terms; one member represents each of the county's nine magisterial (election) districts, and three members serve at large. A student representative, selected for a one-year term at a nominating convention in February conducted by the countywide Student Advisory Council, sits with the Board at all public meetings and participates in discussions but does not vote. Members of the community are invited and encouraged to attend public meetings of the School Board to observe its deliberations.
