RELOCATION PLAN
In an emergency situation, where one or more schools experience a problem that warrants temporary evacuation/relocation (such as a broken gas line, a water main break, a fire, or a toxic spill), the students will be transported to a safe location. The students will remain at their designated safe locations until the emergency situation is rectified and only then will they be returned to their appropriate school. If the emergency situation warrants that all schools shut down (such as sever inclement weather, etc.), the following procedures will be implemented:
  • The parent/guardian or emergency contact person shall be called advising him/her of the impending closing; In the event the parent/guardian or the emergency contact cannot be reached, the child will not be dismissed.
Guidelines - Staff and Principal
  • Principal or his/her designee will make a coded announcement over the intercom alerting staff to implement the relocation plan. The announcement should be one that does not cause panic. It should be a statement that is predetermined and reviewed with the staff at the beginning of the year. The announcement must be different from the one used in the Lock Down Plan. Staff will prepare to evacuate building by informing students to keep back packs, etc. in their possession.

National PTA SCHEMATIC DESIGN FOR NEW WASHINGTON-LEE HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING Below are some extracts of the initial Schematic Design. You can click on each picture to get an expanded view. Most of these slides have not been updated to reflect the changes approved by the School Board on June 3, 2004. The second floor would be built over the west side of the building (not over the auditorium, pool or gym). The media center and various classrooms would be on this floor. Outside the media center would be a balcony overlooking the stadium. In order to provide 800 seats in the auditorium, it is likely that a balcony will be added to the theater on the second floor. The third floor would hold many classrooms and science labs. There would be an area at the end of the longest hall that overlooks portions of the media center and the stadium below. The fourth floor would hold more classrooms and science labs. The plans are being revised so that there will be no fourth floor (except for the two stair towers) at the the side of the building facing N. Stafford St. on the west (along the top on this floor plan). The classrooms originally shown facing this side will be pulled back about 25 feet from the front of the building. This is in response to neighbor's concerns about the mass of the building on this side.

Could Smaller Schools Be The American Future?
By Neal Peirce
Washington Post Writers Group
Second of three columns on new schools
March 21, 2004 Across the United States, a small schools movement is gaining momentum. Private and community foundations are significant players. Far and away the biggest catalyst is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It has poured over $1 billion in five years into promoting smaller schools in Boston, Chicago, Milwaukee and other cities. Just this month New York City announced it was coming on board the small schools movement. It will open 60 schools with 500 students or less 41 high schools, four traditional middle schools and 15 based on an innovative sixth- or seventh-through-12th grade model. "This is a manageable size," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg "a far cry," he suggested, "from the schools of 3,000" in which students easily lose identity and fail to receive individual attention. In Ohio, the Cincinnati-based KnowledgeWorks Foundation helped along by $40 million of Gates Foundation money is leading a statewide initiative to transform 20 large urban high schools into autonomous smaller schools, aimed at achieving more personal and effective learning environments. A foundation-sponsored poll found Ohioans prefer, by a 7-1 ratio, high schools with less than 400 students to those with 1,000 or more.

June 2000
Hi loyal readers! The commentary for this issue of OnScreen comes from staff member, Malory Graham , as she reflects upon her work with youth. This story is a great reminder of why what we do really makes a difference! - Fidelma McGinn CHANGING LIVES ONE BYTE AT A TIME As Director of our Young Producer's Project I find myself writing grants and making pitches all the time about how technology has the power to change lives. Give an inner-city kid a video camera and he'll stay out of jail. Teach an at-risk teen how to make a website and she'll be empowered to do better in school. Really. We have the statistics to prove it. Teens who go through our program successfully graduate and show their finished videos to full-house audiences at 911. But, when the video is edited and the kids go home, I am sometimes left with an empty feeling and I wonder "does it really matter?" Does technology actually empower youth? Do the media arts really affect the larger scheme of things? Is technology enough? Last week, a Sony DV cam, an oil spill and a girl named Angie gave me a definitive YES!
