Nashville High School Library Media Center
The Nashville High School Library Media Center was completely re-modeled during the summer of 1998. During this renovation, two computer labs were added for all classes to use. Students are taking advantage of the many databases available and they are also learning what is available on the Internet.
    Card Catalog
The books and materials which make up the Library Media Center's Collection are cataloged in an electronic database. Access to the database is through the two computers located in the center of the Library Media Center. Materials may be searched by author, title, and subject. The electronic system is called Winnebago and over 21,000 records have been entered for access to the collection. A patron catalog is also located on each computer in LMC at the icon screen.
    Library/Media Center Orientation
Orientations on magazines, references databases, and introduction to the internet are available at the teachers request. Individual teachers may also request an orientation during their conference period so they can conduct the orientations with their classes. All freshmen will have an orientation during September.

The Next Step for School Choice:
    Removing State Constitutional Obstacles
Institute for Justice Challenges The Institute for Justice, the public interest law firm that helped successfully defend Cleveland school choice parents, is launching a series of test cases seeking to remove state constitutional barriers to school choice, with the goal of securing a national precedent in the U.S. Supreme Court. IJ will fight to clear the path for school choice programs by removing obstacles that block the implementation of educational reform in the states. The policy requires state programs to discriminate against religious schools and students. The suit marks the first challenge to a state constitutional provision that limits school choice since the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Cleveland voucher program. On June 27, 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court definitively held that school choice programs that are neutral toward religion, giving parents the power to independently choose where to send their children, are constitutional. The Supreme Court has spoken.

For instance, in 1989, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 9-0 decision that under the First Amendment, a blind college student in Washington State could use his student aid at a religious school to study for the ministry. But when the case returned to the Washington Supreme Court for consideration of state constitutional issues, that court ruled that the Washington Constitution prohibited such a use of public funds. The Washington Attorney General twice (in 1995 and 2000) has applied that ruling to forbid students in public universities from student teaching in religious schools.
For plaintiff Donnell Penhallurick, a devout Seventh Day Adventist who is seeking teacher and special education certification at Eastern Washington University, that means being barred from student-teaching at a Seventh-day Adventist school and teaching instead at a public school. Plaintiff Carolyn Harrison, a teacher at Bellarmine Preparatory School, a Jesuit school in Tacoma, is studying for an administration credential at the University of Washington, Tacoma. Most teachers can perform the required administrative internships at the schools at which they teach; but next semester, Harrison will have to leave her job every other day to intern at a public school, solely because Bellarmine is Catholic.

The Relationships Among Achievement, Low Income, and Ethnicity Across Six Groups of Washington State Students Executive Summary We are pleased to provide this technical report on the relationships among student achievement, income, and ethnicity as the first publication for Washington educators by the Washington School Research Center. The questions addressed by these analyses are important considerations for all of us concerned with improving education in the state of Washington. Media reports that highlight the different achievement levels of various ethnic groups of children are common. These differences are a source of great concern among community groups, and rightfully so. Yet, those of us who work with data and statistics on a regular basis are acutely aware of the dangers inherent in reporting group achievement results that consider only one characteristic for creating those groups. Factors affecting student achievement are varied and complex, and failure to consider multiple factors may lead to erroneous or simplistic answers to very complicated questions. In this report, professors Abbott and Joireman address the question of differences in school level achievement depending on the ethnic composition of the student population, so often reported in the media, while at the same time considering the income levels of the students' families. They begin this effort with a brief review of research conducted elsewhere on this topic, and conclude that previous research has shown that "income is generally a better predictor of student achievement than ethnicity."
