Fishburne Military School
Fishburne Military School was founded in 1878 by James A. Fishburne, a student and protege of
Robert E. Lee. It was while attending Washington College that Fishburne was inspired by Lee to become an educator. The school flourished and, in 1916, Staunton architect T. J. Collins was commissioned to design a new barracks. Following the precedent of A. J. Davis's Virginia Military Institute , the barracks employed a castellated Gothic Revival style. The composition has since become downtown Waynesboro's chief architectural landmark. Collins's sons, Samuel and William, continued the tradition with their designs for the administration/gymnasium building and barracks additions. Fishburne has developed into one of the State's most distinguished military academies, continuously rated an honor military school under the U. S. Junior Army Reserve Officers Training Corps since 1924. It is one of the few military schools in Virginia to continue in operation. Fishburne Military School overlooks the city of Waynesboro. The main entrance to the school is via Church St., near the intersection of Main St. Visitor parking is provided in front of the Administration Building. For further information, visit the school's

Our GIs Earn Enough Cindy Williams The Washington Post, January 12, 2000; Page A19 T his month every member of the U.S. military is getting a 4.8 percent pay raise, the biggest inflation boost the military has seen in 18 years. The ink on the paychecks is not yet dry, but already some politicians and lobbyists are clamoring for bigger raises in future years. Just this week the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) reported that most military people feel they are not paid fairly. Proponents of additional hefty raises argue that even after this month's raise, the military suffers a 13 percent "pay gap" relative to the private sector. But in fact there is no pay gap worthy of the name; our armed forces are already paid very well compared with the rest of America. It makes no sense to pour money into outsized pay raises. The 25 percent pay hike that some proponents are backing would cost taxpayers more than $12 billion a year. The "gap" of 13 percent does not measure the relative levels of military and civilian pay. Rather, it is supposed to reflect the differences between military and private sector raises since 1982. The calculation is set up to make the differences seem as large as possible. For example, it includes the growth in what the military calls "basic pay" but not the growth in allowances for food and housing. And it compares the military and civilian raises over separate time periods. Just correcting for those two problems cuts the result in half.

RSS Feeds OUR AFFILIATES Tuesday, February 25, 2003 Bush may cut school funds for military Several local districts stand to lose significant amounts By DEBORAH BACH SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER As the country prepares for a possible war with Iraq, the Bush administration is planning to cut education funding for hundreds of thousands of children in military families. The government's proposal would eliminate "federal impact aid" provided since 1950 to school districts for military children who live in homes off base, and for children of parents who work as civilians on military bases but live elsewhere. The cuts, which would save $125 million annually, would affect about 900,000 children nationwide and 63 percent of children in military families, according to the National Association of Federally Impacted Schools. Several local districts would lose a significant amount of funding and would have to cut staff. President Bush's proposal is pending a decision from Congress. Educators are questioning the timing of it, saying it is wrong to cut school funding for military children as their parents prepare to go to war.

To Determine Coalition Exit By Jim Garamone / American Forces Press Service
Kimmitt, the deputy chief of operations for Multinational Forces, Iraq, said coalition forces will draw down in Iraq as conditions permit and not by an arbitrary date on a calendar.
Coalition forces remained active in the country, Kimmitt and coalition spokesman Dan Senor said. Over the past 24 hours, coalition forces conducted 1,900 patrols, 20 offensive operations, 29 Navy and Air Force sorties, captured 39 anti-Iraqi elements and released 10 detainees.
A total of five U.S. service members were wounded by improvised explosive devices in the country in the past 24 hours, Kimmitt said. More Civilian Leaders See Navy

New Video System Helps Transitioning Students Solve Problems 'Face-to-Face'
By Rudi Williams
American Forces Press Service

Called the Interactive Counseling Center, the system is a full-featured, self-contained interactive video conferencing system that provides secure, real-time communications and record sharing. It allows guidance counselors, teachers, parents and students see each other on a computer monitor as they work out details of children transitioning from one school to another. The system is being tested at 10 schools throughout the nation. Ten more systems will be installed in the Cumberland County School District that surrounds Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base, N.C., during the week of Oct. 7. Coalition officials expect to have systems installed in more than 30 school districts across the country by the end of March 2003. The aim is to have the systems in all schools that service military-connected children and eventually in Department of Defense Education Activity school overseas.
