George Washington Lives! On the Internet!
George Washington: Farmer, Soldier, and First President of the United States of America. Students can learn all about him on the Internet by George! Included: Activities to use across the grades! George Washington's birthday, February 22, was celebrated really celebrated! by Americans in the past. Balls, teas, and fireworks marked the day our nation's first president was born. In Massachusetts, Old Sturbridge Village, a re-creation of a Massachusetts village of the 1830s, still celebrates George Washington's birthday as it was celebrated years ago. "During the 1800s, one of the biggest official winter celebrations, by George!, was the annual observance of George Washington's birthday," Village officials report. "Even before his death in 1799, the Washington's Birthday bash and its accompanying Birthnight Ball were firmly established in New England and elsewhere in the young republic as high cause for revelry, often at the local tavern or the home of a prominent citizen."

  • Winning the first presidency by a unanimous vote, with some individuals having wished to make Washington king, it seems unusual that he did not really want the position of president. Although a successful general and president, Washington remained interested in farming throughout his presidency. He bred animals, specializing in the breeding of mules and helped to raise the quality of stock across the nation. As the first president, Washington had many new tasks to accomplish with trial and error as the only available method for accomplishing them. After appointing people to head the four executive departments, he tried to meet with each head, or ] secretary, individually. This proved to be daunting. As a result he had the secretaries meet with him as a group, forming the government's first cabinet. New York was the nation’s first capital, but people felt that the capital should be outside the territory of any states. George Washington selected the site for our current capital between the states of Maryland and Virginia. While the new capital was being built, Washington led the country from Philadelphia, which served as a temporary capital.

Washington had no formal schooling. At 17 he became a surveyor for Culpepper County, Virginia. At 20 he was managing the family plantation, and in 1775, became commander of the Continental Army. His Presidency: Washington had presided over the Constitutional Convention and was so well liked that he received every electoral vote and became the first president under the new Constitution. The people's faith in him kept the country together. In 1792 he was reelected. Under his administration, a national bank was approved, peace was made with the Indians and the federal government was proved capable of enforcing its laws. His Life: On April 30, 1789, George Washington, standing on the balcony of Federal Hall on Wall Street in New York, took his oath of office as the first President of the United States. "As the first of every thing, in our situation will serve to establish a Precedent," he wrote James Madison, "it is devoutly wished on my part, that these precedents may be fixed on true principles."

NOTES FOR THE CONSIDERATION OF THE IMPEACHMENT OF PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH, VICE PRESIDENT RICHARD B. CHENEY, SECRETARY OF DEFENSE DONALD H. RUMSFELD, AND ATTORNEY GENERAL JOHN DAVID ASHCROFT (Part 4 of 6) IMPEACHMENT HISTORY UNDER THE CONSTITUTION
A casual reading of the history of impeachment by the Congress might lead one to believe its use, contrary to its clear purpose, "had sunk in this country to the ouster of dreary little judges for squalid misconduct." It has been our good fortune not to have been confronted with the tyrannies of our own Kings and their attendants and forced to struggle for freedom from their despotism. Still the existence of the impeachment power in the Constitution has been present and raised publicly, often prominently, during the administration of every American president. In 1974, to aid the House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary in its consideration of possible grounds for the impeachment of President Nixon, C. Vann Woodward, distinguished professor of history at Yale University, serving as Editor and Director, with the assistance of fourteen prominent historians, compiled a 398 page "Authoritative History of Accusations of High Crimes and Misdemeanors from George Washington to Lyndon Johnson." Charges of misconduct and threats of impeachment against the President, or his civil officers are found in every Presidential administration. Most often the charges have involved corruption which was present in many and prominent in the administrations of Presidents Tyler, Buchanan, Grant and Harding. Sometimes they have involved personal misconduct. Some charges reflect "politics as usual" and are an abuse of the impeachment power itself seeking political advantage. But on many occasions the charges have claimed usurpation of power not delegated to the President, abuse of delegated Presidential power and serious criminal conduct destructive of constitutional government and the rule of law.

was born on February 22, 1732 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. For nearly 20 years Washington helped shape the birth of a nation. He served as commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, as president of the convention that wrote the U.S. Constitution, and in 1789 was elected the first President of the United States. As President, Washington successfully solved many problems, transforming the "plan" of the Constitution into a "working" government. The following description of Washington was written after his death by another founding father, Thomas Jefferson "His mind was great and powerful ... as far as he saw, no judgment was ever sounder. It was slow in operation, being little aided by invention or imagination, but sure in conclusion ... "Perhaps the strongest feature in his character was prudence, never acting until every circumstance, every consideration, was maturely weighed; refraining if he saw doubt, but, when once decided, going through his purpose, whatever obstacles opposed. "His integrity was the most pure, his justice the most inflexible I have ever known ...

George Washington (1732-1799), the first president of the United States, was born in Westmoreland county, Va., February 22, 1732. His ancestry can be traced no further back than his great-grandfather John, who settled in Virginia about 1657. His father died when George was but twelve years old, and George inherited the homestead in Stafford county, Va., nearly opposite Fredericksburg. Very little is known of Washington's early life, probably because there was little to tell. The story of the hatchet and cherry tree are quite apocryphal, having been invented by his subsequent biographers. George's life was not different from that common to Virginia families in easy circumstances. Hunting, fishing, plantation affairs, and a little reading made up its substance. His education was but elementary and very defective, except in mathematics, in which he was largely self-taught. Sparks has "edited" the spelling, grammar, and rhetoric of Washington's Writings Washington's life for the next twenty years was merely that of a typical Virginia planter, a consistent member of the Established (Episcopal) Church, a large slaveholder, a strict but considerate master, and a widely trusted man of affairs. His extraordinary escape in Braddock's defeat had led a colonial minister to declare in a sermon his belief that the young man had been preserved to be "the savior of his country." If there was any such impression it soon died away and Washington gave none of his associates reason to consider him an uncommonly endowed man.

Dear Straight Dope:
Who was the first president of the United States of America? I read somewhere that George Washington would technically be the 8th president. Aris
SDSTAFF CKDextHavn replies:
The following information is taken from Uncle John's Bathroom Reader:
Washington was the first president of the United States under the Constitution of 1789... but the United States declared its independence 13 years before that. In 1777, the Congress adoped the Articles of Confederation, which were ratified by the states in 1781. Later that year, this new legislative body convened and elected John Hanson "President of the United States in Congress Assembled." Hanson had been a member of the Maryland assembly and the Continental Congress, where he played a key role in convincing Maryland to adopt the Articles of Confederation (Maryland was the only state opposed.) Washington sent Hanson a letter of congratulations on his "appointment to fill the most important seat in the United States."
There were seven other Presidents who served under the Articles of Confederation, now forgotten by all except the most trivial of historians.

Fifty-five years ago, the representatives of 12 nations gathered here in Washington to sign the North Atlantic Treaty, which established the most successful military alliance in history. Today, we proudly welcome Bulgaria Estonia Latvia Lithuania Romania Slovakia and Slovenia. We welcome them into the ranks of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. When NATO was founded, the people of these seven nations were captives to an empire. They endured bitter tyranny, they struggled for independence, they earned their freedom through courage and perseverance. And today they stand with us as full and equal partners in this great alliance. It has been my honor to host the Prime Ministers of each new NATO member in the Oval Office. DOJ Home Page George Washington Appoints First Marshals - 1789 The offices of U.S. Marshal and Deputy Marshals were created more than 200 years ago by the first Congress in the Judiciary Act of 1789, the same legislation that established the federal judicial system. The Marshals were given extensive authority to support the federal courts within their judicial districts and to carry out all lawful orders issued by judges, Congress, or the President. The Marshals and their Deputies served the subpoenas, summonses, writs, warrants, and other process issued by the courts, made all the arrests, and handled all the prisoners. They also disbursed the money. The Marshals paid the fees and expenses of the court clerks, U.S. Attorneys, jurors, and witnesses. They rented the courtrooms and jail space and hired the bailiffs, criers, and janitors. They made sure the prisoners were present, the jurors were available, and the witnesses were on time. Thus, the Marshals also provided local representation for the federal government within their districts. They took the national census every 10 years through 1870. They distributed Presidential proclamations, collected a variety of statistical information on commerce and manufacturing, supplied the names of government employees for the national register, and performed other routine tasks needed for the central government to function effectively. Over the past 200 years, Congress and the President also have called on the Marshals to carry out unusual or extraordinary missions, such as registering enemy aliens in time of war, capturing fugitive slaves, sealing the American border against armed expeditions from foreign countries, and swapping spies with the former Soviet Union.
