Home-schooled student wins geography bee
James Williams, 14, sits behind his winning answer at the National Geographic Bee on Wednesday. Story Tools RELATED National Geographic Society WASHINGTON (AP) The competition went to a second tiebreaker before James Williams, a 14-year-old from Vancouver, Washington, claimed victory Wednesday in the 15th annual National Geographic Bee. "I wasn't expecting this at all, it's really exciting," the soft-spoken James, oldest of six children, said after besting 55 finalists in two days of competition. The deciding question: "Goa, a state in southwestern India, was a possession of which country until 1961?" Portugal was James' correct answer, netting a $25,000 college scholarship, a lifetime subscription to National Geographic magazine and a week at SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Adventure Camp. Dallas Simons, a 13-year-old student at Martin Luther King Magnet School in Nashville, Tennessee, placed second and collected a $15,000 college scholarship. Taking third, and a $10,000 scholarship, was Sean Rao, 14, a student at St. Gabriel School in Hubertus, Wisconsin. It was the second straight year a home-schooler has won the bee.

THE WASHINGTON TIMES
A Republican caucus vote set for tomorrow to pick new leaders in the House of Delegates has become a geographic showdown, pitting the party's stronghold in Western Maryland against its bulwark in Central Maryland and the Eastern Shore.
Most of the delegates from the state's rural western counties are expected to back the team of Delegates George C. Edwards, Western Maryland Republican, for minority leader and Anthony J. O'Donnell, Southern Maryland Republican, for minority whip.
Lawmakers from suburban Harford, Baltimore and Anne Arundel counties and the rural Eastern Shore are expected to choose the team of Delegates A. Wade Kach, Baltimore County Republican, for leader and Adelaide C. Eckardt, Eastern Shore Republican, for whip.
The face-off has spurred fierce campaigning on both sides.
The Edwards camp says Mrs. Eckardt's pro-choice stances calls into question her ability to be a conservative leader. They criticized Mr. Kach's lack of leadership experience, despite his 28 years as a delegate.

Earthwatch Combats Geographic Illiteracy
National Geographic Society Grant will send teachers to conservation hotspots in Brazil and U.S, allowing students to apply global lessons locally.
MAYNARD. MA 24 teachers from six states - California, Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, and Washington – will venture to the vast wetlands of Brazil’s Pantanal and to the Skagit River watershed of Washington this summer to participate in conservation research projects as part of a $75,000 grant award Earthwatch Institute has received from National Geographic Society Education Foundation (NGSEF). Earthwatch’s "Strengthening Geography in Schools through Conservation Field Work and Collaboration" is strategically designed to address the lack of geographic knowledge among students in the United States.
"This innovative project will help students become stewards of our natural and cultural resources,” said Barbara Chow, Executive Director of the Society’s Education Foundation. “Giving these teachers a first-hand look at the realities of conservation issues will enliven their teaching.”
The project will send 24 geography/science educators to conservation projects in the Pantanal wetlands in Brazil and the Skagit River watershed in Washington State. Through subsequent workshops and websites, these teachers expect to reach another 2,400 K-12 teachers and 240,000 students with geography and conservation lessons linking field research to local environmental issues.

Dear Postcard Geography Participants, Greetings from Washington, D.C.! I have been enjoying the sites, monuments and buildings that mark the events of our nation's past and allow the conduct of its present. Let me tell you about my home for the last few years... Washington, D.C. is a city, district, and the capital of the United States of America. It was established in 1790 as the site of the new nation's permanent capital. Named after the first U.S. president, George Washington, the city has served since 1800 as the home of our federal government. The city is located on the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. It is bordered on the north, east, and southeast by Maryland and on the southwest by Virginia. Washington's climate is hot and humid in the summer and cold and damp in the winter. It has a lovely spring, ushered in by glorious blooming of world famous cherry blossoms, and a spectacular fall marked by crisp temperatures and brilliant, paint box colors! Washington is home to many famous and interesting public buildings and monuments. The Capitol of the United States is located on a hill 88 feet above the Potomac. It consists of two wings that branch from a central rotunda.

GEOGRAPHY
The landscape of the Pacific Northwest is a combination of mountains and deserts. On the west coast, the Cascade Mountains run the length of the North American continent parallel to the Pacific Ocean. The east side of the Pacific Northwest is framed by the Rocky Mountains and the Umatilla Mountains. Between these three mountain ranges is the great inland desert of the Pacific Northwest. The great inland desert, or the Columbia Plateau as it is sometimes called, is a bleak landscape covered in bunch grass. There are few trees to be seen and little surface water. The inland desert is covered by the volcanic ash of ancient Cascade Mountain eruptions. In many places in the Columbia River Plateau the topsoil, created by volcanic ash, is over 100 feet thick.
