Washington, D.C., Event Celebrates Geography and GIS
Federal Agencies Gathered to Host a Two-Day GIS Day and Geography Awareness Week Event
Redlands, California—Mapping and geographic information system (GIS) technology were the main focus of 32 federal agencies from nine government departments at the Geography Awareness Week and GIS Day celebration held November 19-20, 2003, in Washington, D.C. The event, "Peering Into the Past and Envisioning the Future," drew more than 300 participants that included teachers, students, federal employees, GIS users, and others interested in learning about the importance of geography throughout the world. GIS Day is a global event that is part of a National Geographic Society initiative called Geography Awareness Week, which focuses on geographical achievements. National and international GIS Day events provide GIS users with an arena to showcase applications of the technology to the public. The Association of American Geographers, ESRI, Hewlett–Packard, the Library of Congress, National Geographic Society, Sun Microsystems, University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, and the United States Geological Survey are principal sponsors of the event. First-day events included the Federal CIO Council bimonthly meeting and a Plenary Session cochaired by Hord Tipton, CIO of the U.S. Department of the Interior, and Kim Nelson, CIO of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Plenary speakers addressed attendees about geography and GIS and how they are impacting our world. Jack Dangermond, ESRI president, and Roger Tomlinson opened the session with an overview of Geography Awareness Week and GIS Day and discussed the importance of these events to the federal community.

Approximately 130,500 square miles (338,000 sq. km), Finland is similar in size to the state of Montana. However, it is narrower and longer with 690 miles (1100 km) stretching between its southern and northern tips. Thousands of islands and small cliffs dot the southern and southwestern coast of Finland in the Baltic Sea. Åland, the most recognizable set of islands, is located between Finland and Sweden and boasts more than 6,500 isles and islands. Many important relics of the Stone, Iron and Bronze Ages have been found there. .

Pigskin Geography Pigskin Geography uses National Football League (NFL) teams and Monday newspapers to give students in grades 5 - 12 a practical understanding of the concepts of geography. The three-part program runs for 15 weeks, a regular football season. Weekly quizzes give students practice in research and the excitement of answering geography questions in football-related disguises. The first third of the program focuses on: Identifying states and capital cities Major cities Identifying major rivers, lakes, oceans and bays The second third is the introduction of geographic concepts and terminology such as: Peninsulas Straits Cardinal directions Time zones Continental divide Transcontinental flights The final third of the program concentrates on interstate highways, watersheds, calculation of mileage and other concepts. Students also have the opportunity to simulate a float down the Erie Canal, settle the west via the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails and be a drover on the Chisholm Trail.

A Comprehensive Note on GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY The terms "Kashmir" and "Muslim" are often loosely, and erroneously, used when referring to the State of Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan has deliberately fostered this misrepresentation to stake its claim to what it terms a "Muslim State". The constituent units of the State of Jammu and Kashmir still retain many of their distinctive religious, ethnic and linguistic features. This heterogeneity was not lost even when they were incorporated in one or the other empire - Maurya, Kushan, Mughal, Sikh or British, and today it reflects the ethnic, linguistic, cultural and religious diversity of India. History ... Suggested Reading List Divided by the Cascade Mountain range, Washington is a land of contrasts. Western Washington is characterized by a mild marine climate, while the eastern part of the state is high-desert country. Despite the claim in Sleepless in Seattle , it really does not rain nine months a year in Puget Sound country. While the average total rainfall is 36 inches, most of the rain falls between October and April, heavy rainfall is rare, and the sun really does shine frequently. Average temperatures range from highs of 75 degrees (23.9 c) in mid-summer to lows of 26 degrees (-3.3 c) in January. East of the Cascades, irrigation transforms the desert landscape, making it home to the state's major agricultural region. Average temperatures in eastern Washington range from summer highs of 89 degrees (31.6 c) to winter lows of 19 degrees (-7.2 c), and the average annual precipitation is only 18 inches (46.2 cm).

Resources Community North Cascades Discussion Board Background History Geography Washington Resources PARKS North Cascades National Park Geography The Cascade Mountain range runs 500 miles from Northern California to British Columbia, but it is not until it reaches Northwest Washington that the mountains are at their most breathtaking. The Cascades are higher in other parts of the range, but nowhere are they as dramatic. Jagged, rocky peaks of up to 10,000 feet give way precipitously to near-sea level valleys; glaciers cling dizzyingly to the sides of foreboding slopes; everywhere waterfalls tumble down from the mountains, the characteristic that gave the Cascades their name. One of the most striking features of the North Cascades is the fantastic number of glaciers in the region. These mountains are home to more than 300 of them-more than half of the glaciers in the contiguous United States. Glaciers are formed when more snow accumulates than melts or evaporates. The weight of this continuous buildup of snow is immense and causes the snow to compact into ice, which then slowly moves downhill. As glaciers move, they gouge and scrape the land and redefine landscapes. Mountains may appear to be in suspended animation but, like everything else, they are in a continuous state of change.

"Geography for Life: National Geography Standards 1994" is a major contribution to social studies and geographical education. It specifies what students in American schools should learn and be able to do with regard to geography. There are six essential elements of geography into which 18 standards are grouped. ELEMENT 1: THE WORLD IN SPATIAL TERMS Maps, photographs, and satellite images are principal tools for investigating the relationships between people, places, and environments. When information is shown using those tools, it is in a spatial context. The spatial context for geography is the Earth. The geographically informed person knows and understands: (Standard 1) How to use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective. (Standard 2) How to use mental maps to organize information about people, places, and environments in a spatial context. (Standard 3) How to analyze the spatial organization of people, places, and environments on Earth's surface. ELEMENT 2: PLACES AND REGIONS People are attached to particular places and regions. Regions and places have been given meaning by people, and in turn those places and regions help people to organize and understand the complex world. The geographically informed person knows and understands: (Standard 4) The physical and human characteristics of places. (Standard 5) That people create regions to interpret Earth's complexity. (Standard 6) How culture and experience influence people's perceptions of places and regions.

How did volcanic activity affect the geography of Washington State?
    Jennifer
Hi Jennifer, That's a pretty complicated question, but there are two main parts of Washington State that have been affected in recent geologic times by volcanism. One of them, of course, is the cascades volcanoes along the W part of the state. The other is the Columbia River basalts, which cover most of the south and southeast part of the state. These are an example of "flood basalts" and they are between 25 and 15 million years old. There is more information about flood basalts on the web at: http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/vwlessons/volcano_types/ Sincerely,

    Summary of Project
Strong commercial and cultural ties across the Washington and Idaho State line unite the Washington-Idaho Partnership Project study area. The primary focus area is the Spokane to Coeur d'Alene urban corridor that extends from Spokane County, Washington, to Kootenai County, Idaho. Both counties have mature geographic information system (GIS) programs and can provide significant data to the project. Pend Oreille County, Washington, and Bonner County, Idaho, lie north of the primary focus area and are included in the project to investigate data-sharing opportunities in areas with less mature GIS programs.
    Project Data Description
    • Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles
Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles Countywide digital orthophoto quadrangle (DOQ) mosaics were created from available 1-m digital orthophotographs covering the project area. Most of the available DOQs were created from 1998-99 vintage aerial photographs, with a few from 1992. Under a partnership agreement with Kootenai County, Idaho, 32 quarter-quadrangles were updated. The metadata (see Layer Metadata link on the viewer) lists the original source dates for all DOQs used in the mosaics. The mosaics were compressed at 10:1 using MrSID compression software. Some speckling in the mosaic images resulted from this compression. Future plans include serving uncompressed DOQs directly from the data server to avoid the speckling.
