    Education Issues Series
Special Education Inclusion Educators' Bulletin Board IDEAS Resource pages on educational issues Professional support ... ONLINE SERVICES This article was updated November 5, 2001 Inclusion remains a controversial concept in education because it relates to educational and social values, as well as to our sense of individual worth. Any discussion about inclusion should address several important questions:
    • Do we value all children equally? Is anyone more or less valuable? What do we mean by "inclusion?" Are there some children for whom "inclusion" is inappropriate?
There are advocates on both sides of the issue. James Kauffman of the University of Virginia views inclusion as a policy driven by an unrealistic expectation that money will be saved. Furthermore, he argues that trying to force all students into the inclusion mold is just as coercive and discriminatory as trying to force all students into the mold of a special education class or residential institution. At the other end of the spectrum are those who believe that all students belong in the regular education classroom, and that "good" teachers are those who can meet the needs of all the students, regardless of what those needs may be.

Parenting Resources Home Religious Education How are the Children? Of the tribes of Africa, the most fearsome and intelligent warriors were in the Masai tribe. It might be surprising to learn then that the traditional greeting that passed between warriors was "Kasserianingera." Its meaning: "And how are the children?" Those words still serve as their traditional greeting, acknowledging the high value the tribe places on its children. Even those without children of their own give the traditional answer, "All the children are well." It means that the daily struggles of life, even among a poor people like the Masai, do not preclude the proper care of children. Living in affluence and often fairly isolated from our villages, we sometimes think that we do not need help and often overlook the resources that are available. UUS is a village, we are spread out over a wide area but we still come together to support each other through caring circles, covenant groups, religious exploration and worship. Here I would like to offer some resources for parents while they are away from the safety of our village. If you need further resources or specific information on a topic, please contact me directly.
