WARNING SIGNS You should be concerned if your child:
    (1) admits to gang involvement; (2) is obsessed with one particular color of clothing or shows a desire for a particular logo over and over; (3) wears sagging pants (this in and of itself is not indicative of gang activity); (4) wears excessive jewelry with distinctive designs and may wear it only on either the right or left side of the body; (5) is obsessed with gangster-influenced music, videos and movies to the point of imitation; (6) withdraws from family with an accompanying change in demeanor;

The Goals 2000: Educate America Act of 1994 authorized state-level parent information and resource centers to aid families and parent educators in strengthening partnerships between parents and professionals in meeting the educational needs of children. The following parent information and resource centers in 28 states received four-year grants in 1995 under the Goals 2000: Educate America Act. The brief descriptions here, as well as a more extensive profile of each organization are provided by the U.S. Department of Education in the publication, Goals 2000: Educate America Act, Parent Information and Resource Centers, Grant Abstracts FY 1995. On November 2, 2003, at 19th Street Church, 115 middle, junior, and senior high school students from Washington, DC, Prince George's County, Maryland and Montgomery County, Maryland were inducted into the National Achievers Society. Each of the student inductees demonstrate on a daily basis that "Achievement Matters" by working to achieve and maintain a 3.0 or better GPA.
To date, over four hundred students have been inducted into the Greater Washington Urban League's chapter of the National Achievers Society. As members of the society, the students are provided with a variety of resource materials, educational and cultural enrichment opportunities as well as assistance with post-secondary education preparation and application processes.
FIRST SCHOLARSHIPBUILDER/YOUNG SCHOLARS GRADUATE
Students who participated in the League's ScholarshipBuilder/Young Scholars Program began to graduate from college this spring. The ScholarshipBuilder/Young Scholars Program was a post-secondary eduction/drop out prevention program financially sponsored by the Merrill Lynch Foundation and PSI, a local minority owned Foundation. The students graduated from high school in 2000 and went to colleges across the country. Other students in the program are scheduled to graduate in December 2004 and May 2005.
