Referendum 55 - Charter Schools Legislation
June 9, 2004
– OSPI was notified today by the Secretary of State’s office that petitions have been received for Referendum 55, the proposed ballot measure that will allow voters to keep or repeal the charter school law passed during the 2004 legislative session. The receipt of these signatures means that charter schools legislation – which was slated to go into effect on June 10, 2004 – is suspended at least until the Secretary of State’s office verifies the number of signatures of registered voters on the Referendum 55 petitions. If enough voters’ signatures have been gathered to qualify Referendum 55 for the November ballot, the charter schools law will remain suspended until the results of the general election are certified on December 2. If the referendum fails to qualify for the November ballot, the charter school law will take effect, and charter school proponents may file applications with potential school district sponsors.

in your child's education
Parents, Teachers Differ on School Involvement: A survey of Michigan parents and teachers
What is parental involvement, exactly?
Parental involvement in your child's education can mean:
  • Reading to your child Checking homework every night Discussing your children's progress with teachers Voting in school board elections Helping your school to set challenging academic standards Limiting TV viewing on school nights Becoming an advocate for better education in your community and state.
Or, it can be as simple as asking your children, "How was school today?" But ask every day. That will send your children the clear message that their schoolwork is important to you and you expect them to learn.
Why is parental involvement important?
Here are just some of the reasons it is important for parents to be actively involved in their child's education:
  • The family makes critical contributions to student achievement from pre-school through high school. A home environment that encourages learning is more important to student achievement than income, education level or cultural background. (Henderson and Berla)

Washington State Resources for Parents of Children and Youth with Disabilities
PDF Version (488 KB) get Acrobat Reader Parents of youth with disabilities have unique opportunities to promote their successful transition to postsecondary education, employment and full adult participation in society. Families can assist in the transition process by providing adolescents direction in their exploration of interests, guidance in career and college planning, and encouragement as they pursue their dreams. Parents can help each other, too. As they develop skills in working with their own children they can: P rovide information,
A nswer questions,
R ecommend resources,
E mpower youth and young adults with disabilities,
N etwork,
T rain,
S upport one another. DO-IT serves to increase the successful participation of individuals with disabilities in academics and careers, especially in promising fields where they have been underrepresented, including business, science, engineering, mathematics, and technology. DO-IT helps individuals with disabilities use technology as an empowering tool. Parents can provide the foundation for young people to become self-determined, to learn decision-making skills, and to gain access to resources. They can help empower their children's personal plans for success.
