SANTORUM AND MILLER CUT RED TAPE HELPING TO REDUCE PAPERWORK FOR TEACHERS Bipartisan legislation to reduce paperwork for teachers will result in more quality time in the classroom.
Washington, DC - U.S. Senators Rick Santorum (R-PA), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, and Zell Miller (D-GA) cut the red-tape, reducing the amount of paperwork for special education teachers by announcing the Teacher Paperwork Reduction Act of 2002 at a press conference today in the Capitol.
"Today, I am pleased to announce the introduction of the bipartisan Teacher Paperwork Reduction Act of 2002, along with my colleague Senator Miller. Less paperwork for teachers equals more education for students," said Santorum. "As we consider this legislation, our greatest responsibility is to improve the quality of education that students with disabilities receive. Special education teachers spend an average of five hours per week on paperwork compared to general education teachers who spend and average of two hours per week on paperwork."
This bipartisan legislation includes four main provisions to correct the problem of burdensome paperwork for special education teachers including: a reduction in paperwork by 50 percent within 18 months of enactment and encourage efforts towards additional reductions; a study by the Government Accounting Office (GAO) within 180 days of enactment to make recommendations on steps that Congress, the U.S. Department of Education, states and local districts can take to reduce paperwork by more than 50 percent; mandatory mediation for all disputes related to the individualized education programs (IEPs) within one year of enactment and direct the Department of Education to conduct research to determine best practices for successful mediation with existing funds appropriated through Part D of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

home Washington State Genetics Documents Washington State Genetics Education Plan Over the past few years, rapid advances in genetics and related medical applications have raised growing concerns about the resulting educational needs of the general public, professionals and others. In 1997, the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) responded by recruiting a diverse group of stakeholders to comprise a Genetics Education Steering Committee (GESC). As part of this effort, research and public hearings were conducted by EvansGroup, who used the information gathered to draft a plan for delivering well coordinated and comprehensive genetics education to Washingtonians over the next three to five years. This genetics education plan is intended to be a living document, designed for implementation and revision as needed to reflect new understanding in a changing environment. While DOH facilitated the development of this plan, it is the product of, and belongs to, all of the many stakeholders who played a role in its development. Its ultimate success or failure as a tool for planning and action depends on its adoption and application by these and other organizations in a position to share information and educate others. Learning Home Welcome to the Educational Resources section of our website.
As home to over 135,000 copies of manuscripts dealing with the life of George Washington, we've recently begun a program to provide primary materials and lessons for teachers for use with their classes. High school and middle-school age students can link to our twelve-slide overview, with accompanying primary materials and questions. These resources can work on several levels. First, the twelve slides themselves provide a general chronology of the life of George Washington as well as secondary information on the larger historical context. From here we hope you'll link to the accompanying primary document and questions. Manuscripts like Washington's school book exercises, an address to the Senate, his will and others give students the chance to examine the life and times of a leading figure in American history firsthand and in greater depth. Finally, throughout the lessons, we've tried to communicate just what it is that "historians" do by referring to the editing process along the way and giving students a chance to try their own hand at a transcription. GW: Kids GW: In the News is a regularly updated series of mini-lessons linking George Washington and early American history to current events. Each background slide provides information on a contemporary situation and the context of the controversy as it relates to Washington's own experience. Users may then link to a relevant primary GW document and questions. These brief lessons are designed as "bell ringers" for students of a wide range of ages, dependent upon content material.
