Department of Psychology: General Information
Back to Psychology Welcome to the Department of Psychology at Central Washington University. Our department offers strong programs of study through which students can develop an understanding of the perspectives, content, and methods of the science and practice of psychology. The department also serves as a center for research related to human and animal behavior and provides psychological and educational services to the community. The department offers the following degree and certificate programs:
Undergraduate Programs
  • B.A. Psychology (45 or 60 credits) Minor in Psychology
Graduate Programs
  • M.S. Counseling Psychology M.S. Experimental Psychology M.S. Organization Development M.Ed. School Counseling M.Ed. School Psychology Certification School Counseling Certification School Psychology
The undergraduate major in psychology is designed (a) to prepare qualified students for advanced study in the discipline and (b) to provide an avenue into employment in one of many areas in which behavioral science skills and knowledge are important, such as personnel positions, public relations, administration and management, health services, teaching, and many others. We do this in a context which provides opportunities for students to structure parts of the major and supplementary activities to their particular interests. Students have many opportunities to work closely with faculty in research and field experiences. With 22 faculty members, the department is large enough to provide diverse educational and research experiences, but small enough to treat students as individuals.

Education of a practical and utilitarian nature which would teach the skills necessary for earning a livelihood and at the same time develop character and morality.(Dll) Minds would be educated and their hands trained. Hand training builds character. Education must have practical value.(D38) Theory of Knowledge The only kind of knowledge that has any sort of value is knowledge that has some definite relation to daily lives of the men and women who are seeking it.(A4) Theory of Human Nature: There should be no limit placed upon the development of any individual because of color. By Chris L. Jenkins
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, April 4, 2004; Page C06 RICHMOND, April 2 The debate over spending that has divided the Virginia General Assembly for the past three months has come down to one main issue: How much should the state government pay for public education? While still divided over taxes, the Republican-controlled Senate and House of Delegates have found some common ground over how much Virginia can afford to spend on transportation, public safety and health care. But they are nearly $1 billion apart on how much more to spend on Virginia's 214 school divisions over the next two years. The debate goes beyond the question of dollars and cents: The two sides differ on how the commonwealth should fulfill the educational guidelines codified in the state constitution more than 30 years ago. "Education is the difference in a nutshell between us and the House," said Sen. John H. Chichester (R-Stafford), author of the chamber's $60 billion budget plan.
