FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AG sues Washington Education Association for alleged campaign finance violations
February 12, 1997 - OLYMPIAThe State Attorney General's Office filed suit today against the Washington Education Association alleging multiple violations of Initiative 134, the state's campaign finance law.
"Our investigation shows the WEA clearly failed to provide important campaign finance information that the public had a right to know," said State Attorney General Christine Gregoire. "This suit seeks to enforce the law and bring WEA into compliance."
The teachers' union is charged with failing to correctly report hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions, "loans" and expenditures that were used for political activities. The suit also alleges WEA improperly collected and spent union dues to help finance its political-action committee, WEA-PAC. In addition, the suit charges WEA used its Community Outreach Program as a second political-action committee without properly registering it with the Public Disclosure Commission.
In November, 1992, voters approved Initiative 134, which made significant changes to campaign finance disclosure laws. The Initiative prohibits the practice of using mandatory union payroll deductions for political activities without annual, written reauthorization from each union member. The AG's suit states that WEA attempted to circumvent the reauthorization requirement with the Community Outreach Program which is funded with mandatory dues assessments. The suit contends the outreach program's "primary purpose was to influence the political process by supporting or opposing candidates and ballot measures."

Wishing you a blessed Thanksgiving!
Holiday donations are accepted every day before Thanksgiving and distributed all week long. If you would like to contribute, you are encouraged to bring non-perishable foods as early as possible. Thanksgiving is coming soon and we will be closed, but will be open This year St. Leo's is not providing a Thanksgiving Day meal, but a local hotel, sponsored by the Emergency Food Network and the Salvation Army, is providing a Thanksgiving dinner to our community in need.
Why We Don't ask for Proof One of the comments made by people volunteering is that they don't understand why we'd serve people with these big beautiful BMWs. It's hard to see the need in these people, Before loosing jobs, these families had beautiful homes, fancy cars, and a big paycheck. How could they be in need now? Let's look at it from that family's view. That home and car cost money in upkeep, and now the money is gone. Taxes, insurance, utilities are all more in a big house, but selling a house is only an option if you have time to make the sale. Houses aren't guaranteed to sell the first week they're on the market. Then there's the escrow; the cost of a new place to stay; moving costs... more money that you don't have.
