Cities/Buildings Database
The Cities/Buildings Database is a collection of digitized images of buildings and cities drawn from across time and throughout the world, available to students, researchers and educators on the web.
Begun in 1995, the Database was conceived
as a multi-disciplinary resource for students,
faculty, and others in the academic community.
It has grown steadily since then, with
contributions from a wide range of scholars,
and now contains over 5000 images ranging
from New York to Central Asia, from African
villages, to the Parc de la Villette, and
conceptual sketches and models of Frank Gehry's
Experience Music Project. These have all been
scanned from original slides or drawn from documents in the public domain. They are freely available to anyone with access to the Web for use in the classroom, student study, or for individual research purposes. In 1999, with the help of the Digital Libraries Initiative Program and the Center for Information System Optimization, we adopted a new search engine. Researchers can now search for buildings by country, city, style, title, architect, date of construction, as well as other fields. You are free to link to these pages, but we request that when you do you provide us with your URL; this will help us to track usage, and also justify our efforts to expand the resource.

Above: Atomic Frontier Days poster.
Cold War symbols pervade the state of Washington. The Space Needle and Pacific Science Center attest to the future-minded, high-tech, aerospace-oriented thinking around Puget Sound. During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Seattle learned to call itself "jet city," among other "aerospacey" things, as Boeing's increasing production defined the local economy. During the annual Seafair festival (which commemorated not space but Seattle's maritime heritage), the city hosted the Navy's squadron of Blue Angel performing jets as well as a variety of naval vessels. Richland High Bombers , after 1970 or so, adopted an atomic-blast mushroom cloud as the school logo. Townspeople defended the much-criticized symbol as an accurate icon for their history. Much more than Seattle, Richland and Hanford, products of the atom, were creatures of World War Two and the Cold War. [On Richland's past see John M. Findlay, "Atomic Frontier Days: Richland, Washington, and the Modern American West," Journal of the West 34 (July 1995): 32-41.]

Hi! On behalf of the members of the Tri-Cities Drum Circle i would like to welcome you to our website. Our group is a rare resource in these parts, and we're thrilled it exists. If you're a drummer (or thinking about becoming a drummer), we're glad you found us! We update the content of this website a number of times every month with information about drumming stuff. We meet on a monthly basis (see the Monthly Jams section below for details) and our gatherings are open to drumming newbies and drumming veterans alike. All ages are welcome, but anyone under 15 must be accompanied by a legal guardian and be there to drum. We strongly discourage anyone from bringing infants (for the infants' sake). Our events are free they are not financially sponsored by any music store or vendor, nor are they a commercial venture of any group member. Everyone who attends them does so for the sheer joy of sharing the heartbeat. Some things in life are like that.
